ARCHIVED Gravy For Turkey
tarnalberry replied to psawyer's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I take the juice from the turkey, add a cornstarch/water mixture, and that's it. It always turns out great. -
ARCHIVED What Blender And/or Food Processor Do You Use?
tarnalberry replied to Emily Elizabeth's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a KitchenAid blender for whipping/blending/mixing things, a KitchenAid stick blender for much the same for hot soups (I definitely like those), and a CuisinArt food prep processor for chopping/mixing other things. (Definitely different purpose.) The big food processor (stand mixer) is kinda like a blender for very dense stuff? -
ARCHIVED Thanks But No Thanks
tarnalberry replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's a good approach. I think I did something like that with some chocolate I got one time - it was milk chocolate, and I said "Oh, thanks. I can't have it, but it looks tasty..." and before I could say anything, the person said "well, maybe your husband could have it", and I laughed and said "oh, he absolutely hates chocolate, but I do a chocolate thing... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Deal With The Feelings?
tarnalberry replied to nutralady2001's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The *AVERAGE* time for diagnosis in the US is 10 years. That means it takes a lot longer for some people - and you seem to definitely be on the tail end of the "long time to diagnosis" side of the distribution. But does that make you feel any better? No. Does knowing that the current blood tests having been around for around a decade, but not all of... -
ARCHIVED Thanks But No Thanks
tarnalberry replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's interesting, because - and it's probably just a difference in how different people are raised - I can't imagine it being anything other than impolite to return a gift when it's given. (Hence, I'd only do it if the gift itself was quite rude, or the friendship was so close that polite/impolite didn't usually apply.) But, the only time I get a gift that... -
ARCHIVED Sick Just From The Smell Of Gluten?
tarnalberry replied to XxKittykat's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link Smells come from aromatics - from volatile compounds that can get to the olfactory senses. Volatile compounds have to be able to evaporate into the air, something that a heavy molecule like a gluten protein can't do. The idea that conditioning could lead to those symptoms isn't so far fetched, and doesn't mean the symptoms aren... -
ARCHIVED Blood Testing Reference Ranges Vs "positve" For Celiac
tarnalberry replied to woolwhippet's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
different labs run the tests somewhat differently, and so will have different reference ranges. where did you see the 10.0 for a positive versus the 4.0? -
ARCHIVED Parties, Gatherings, And Informal Events
tarnalberry replied to amande01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think you were a kill-joy at all, but rather, no one knew how to respond after your statement. So, realize that you didn't do anything wrong, it was just that there was a social difficulty that wasn't overcome. What I've learned to do is to make it my responsibility to move the conversation on after that part. So it may be: "Why aren't you... -
ARCHIVED Thanks But No Thanks
tarnalberry replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
if I get questions about it after the fact, I'll totally be upfront and explain things, and say how I put it to good use and did really appreciate the thought. of course, the assumption here is that it's not a close friend or family member. In the case of a close friend or family member, I'd say something at the time, but would only give it back if they... -
ARCHIVED Eating What Other People Cook
tarnalberry replied to woolwhippet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's the tricky part - their regular stuff is fine; their organic stuff has gluten. (This box certainly did, perhaps they changed their recipe in the past two years?) -
ARCHIVED Horrible Bruising On Arm After Blood Test?
tarnalberry replied to HAK1031's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I usually bruise after I have blood drawn - whether for a test or for a donation. I've done a lot of blood drives (I'm pretty sure I'm over 10 between the two states I've done now), and they've *ALWAYS* done a straight arm raise with pressure after the needle's removed - *NEVER* bending an arm. The bruising has usually been moderate after that. One time... -
Unless you're working in an area of loose flour, I'm inclined to believe the symptoms are usually psychosomatic. That's not to say that you aren't really feeling them, of course, but the gluten has to be ingested to cause damage, and the aromatics that you get from baked goods and the like aren't the heavy, gluten-containing proteins that can make you sick...

ARCHIVED Eating What Other People Cook

lol, sorry. I've been sick for four days, and my fever and pharmaceutical addled brain totally read that wrong. /duh sorry! -
ARCHIVED Eating What Other People Cook
tarnalberry replied to woolwhippet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
actually, they can. (my wheat-eating father in law loved with gluten-free, casein-free, low-fat pumpkin pie: Open Original Shared Link (the crust is here: Open Original Shared Link) -
ARCHIVED Eating What Other People Cook
tarnalberry replied to woolwhippet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you are 100% confident that it was that meal, then I'd talk to her about it. A pamphlet's not going to help, as you've already described her as bending over backwards about it. I'd approach it in a very friendly, upfront manner - she is family, after all. Something along the lines of, "I *really* appreciate all the effort you went through to make... -
While it may not seem like it, you mind comfort in figuring out where exactly you *do* have control, and this is one of those places. You have the choice of eating only food you cook in your own pans that you store in your own room prepared with utensils you also store in your own room. If you have nothing but two pans, two wooden spoons, a fork/knife/spoon...

ARCHIVED Slightly Protruding Rib
tarnalberry replied to whattodo's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Mine does the same. Every doctor I've talked to (and I've had quite good luck with my doctors) have said that it may be quite normal - we're not actually symmetric). It is still there after correcting what it essentially a leg length difference (it's in the pelvis, not the leg, but it's effectively the same thing by the time you get to my sacrum) and realigning... -
ARCHIVED Nutrition And Vitamins
tarnalberry replied to MrMark's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
yep, there's really not much that you can't get from a well balanced non-gluten diet that you get from wheat. in fact, wheat is not the best source of almost every vitamin/mineral that people site it being high in, but the grains that are better tend to be a bit more esoteric (such as amaranth and quinoa). the only thing that you may want to supplement... -
ARCHIVED Supermarket Butcher Case
tarnalberry replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've seen that in the crab meat and salad shrimp area at Whole Foods, and I just told them. Tey can ignore you if they want, but at least you've let them know. -
ARCHIVED Help!
tarnalberry replied to sickchick's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All mammalian milk contains casein - that's what makes true milk, well, milk. But there's more than one subtype of casein and different animals have different amounts of each subtype. So, if you are not hugely bothered by a particular subtype, you may find that a different mammal's milk, which has less of that subtype, bothers you even less. There's not... -
ARCHIVED New gluten-free Beer Is Coming! More Choices
tarnalberry replied to mamaw's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
the only one I've had so far is bard's tale. I'm not a huge beer fan - well, I've mostly hated it all my life - but this one is okay. (that's high praise from me. ) -
ARCHIVED Need Oatmeal Help Fast!
tarnalberry replied to blondebombshell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
oats have two issues: 1. most of them are contaminated - you can google for 'gluten free oats' to find ones that are produced in fields that aren't rotated with wheat and processed in facilities that aren't shared, but that doesn't affect number 2... 2. as the oat protein, avenin, is similar to the wheat protein, gliadin, about 10% of celiacs react to oats... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Figure Out The Etiquette
tarnalberry replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think it depends entirely on the host/hostess. In some cases - if the host/hostess knows that I have food issues, I don't say anything and just bring food. In some cases - if the host/hostess is particular about things being a certain way - I'll talk to him/her and find out what I should bring to match, or if I should just be eating ahead of time. I... -
