ARCHIVED Calcium Supplement
tarnalberry replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take the rainbow light 'food based calcium' as it's 500mg calcium each (about as much as you can absorb), 2:1 calcium to magnesium ratio (important for utilization of calcium) and has sufficient vitD (in the more available D3 form) as well. -
ARCHIVED Too Much Fat?
tarnalberry replied to radgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
in a case like that, I'd ask if it was fat, or nuts. in either case, I'd vary your sources of fat - for me, the biggest sources are almonds, avocados, olive oil, canola oil, coconut, flax seeds, eggs, and hemp seeds. -
ARCHIVED Both Gluten And Lactose Intolerance
tarnalberry replied to Mary88's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
you can continue to eat the same way (minus the whole grain bread) by changing the grains you cook. rather than having bulgar or barley, for instance, as a side dish, make brown rice or quinoa or amaranth or lentils or beans. all the fruits and vegetables are still fine. if you're eating whole foods, and cooking from scratch, you'll find there aren't too... -
ARCHIVED Inconsistent Reactions To Glucose
tarnalberry replied to Flynn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm guessing that you're really asking if intermittent reactions to gluten are normal. Glucose is a sugar and not related to celiac disease; gluten is a grain protein and the trigger for the autoimmune damage of celiac disease. Yes, many people respond differently, and not everyone always get diarrhea after each meal. -
ARCHIVED How Sick Were You On Gluten?
tarnalberry replied to amberleigh's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I never had that many symptoms, and they were never very severe. Some gurgling, a little gas, some stomach cramping, some fatigue - nothing that stopped me from doing anything I wanted to do. But I felt improved on a gluten-free diet, and don't want osteoporosis, unresolvable anemia, or lymphoma in 30 years, and I do want to be as healthy as possible, so... -
if you do a search for seattle in the forum, you'll find a lot of stuff on the forum for the area. most of the good stuff is in the city itself, but there's whole foods or pcc around (grocery stores), and some restaurants all over the east side. (I think there's a thai ginger in redmond too... one of my favorite places. )

ARCHIVED Generic Z-pak
tarnalberry replied to Babygirl6915's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
you can ask for an alternative immediately. I had to do than when on biaxin, on time, and changed antibiotic mid-course. the important part is to not discontinue or interrupt the cycle of treatment. just call your doctor, be *very* clear in the message on the phone about the side effects and whether or not toughing it out is an option (do consider that... -
ARCHIVED Online Celiac Testing A Scam?
tarnalberry replied to AnneM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
yes. this question has come up a number of times. some people have reported about themselves or their family members testing negative, but don't forget that there are two factors why we don't hear about many of these cases: the population sample that enterolab gets is anything but random - it's handpicked from people who are sick and desperate to know what... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Lose Weight & Stay Gluten Free?
tarnalberry replied to Steveofmt's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's no special gluten free diet plan for weight loss - stick to gluten free foods, in quantities that keep your calorie count below the amount you expend in a day. (Yes, *that* portion is that easy. The really complicated factor is how much you expend in a day. Many people vary greatly from the standard calculators.) In order to not feel like you... -
ARCHIVED Generic Z-pak
tarnalberry replied to Babygirl6915's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had no problems with either, but the formulations of generics and 'brand-name' are slightly different, so they may well be tolerated differently by different people. From calling the company, it is my understanding they are both gluten free, but I would advise you to confirm that. Unfortunately, in a situation like this (and many will disagree with... -
Just for clarification, the majority of us on here are not doctors, or other medical professionals. And true medical opinions over the internet are not likely to happen, as there is no way to get a full picture (especially without discourse). That's not to say that we don't have a lot of well educated opinions here, however - the folks on this board...

ARCHIVED Is A Medical Dx Crucial For You?
tarnalberry replied to radgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I generally say that I am gluten intolerant. If there are further questions, I say that my blood tests were inconclusive, but my dietary test was conclusive. I don't give a flying flip about validating my physical health (or mental, really) to someone else. If you have wonky knees (that's the technical term, you know ), and hence don't go running every... -
ARCHIVED My Sweet Baby Girl Has What!?!?!?!?
tarnalberry replied to vanillazeis's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
based on what you've written, celiac is perfectly likely, and you're lucky it was caught so early. at this point, I'd call and verify that they're not going to want to do a biopsy, then take her gluten free. yes, there is no denying that the learning curve is a pain, and that she (and you) will have to learn to not be "just like everyone else" when it comes... -
I don't think it screams celiac at all. I'm not saying that it couldn't be, but it really isn't all that similar to the pattern that is common (not even most common) for celiac. And this is a reason it's hard to diagnose - the pattern is very disperse. There are a couple of things that, once other options are exhausted, say "yeah, test for that too", but...

ARCHIVED Is A Medical Dx Crucial For You?
tarnalberry replied to radgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't need an official dx. I know my body better than my doctor does, and if I feel better off gluten than on it, and feeling better is what matters to me, then... I already have my answer. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Get Your Fiber?
tarnalberry replied to Joni63's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
four servings of fruit and five servings of veggies are plenty to get in the 25 grams of fiber a day. really, more than enough. not to mention brown rice, quinoa, amaranth, lentils, beans, seeds (like flax), etc. -
ARCHIVED *****fyi***********&Link to website
tarnalberry replied to mouth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
blue lizard isn't unique in protection against UVA and UVB protection. the reason it does a good job at this is because it's main active ingredient is zinc oxide, which has a very wide absorption spectrum. (well, reflective spectrum, really...) there are a number of other sunblocks that have zinc oxide (and titanium dioxide, which further expands the spectrum... -
with last minute things, I almost always do *not* eat with the rest of the people. at an italian place, there's likely to be a capresse salad (tomatoes and mozerella) that is safe, but I would be prepared to either bring food or eat before or after, just in case.

tarnalberry replied to mouth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been using Rainbow Light's women's formula, which I'm happy with, but it might be a bit big for your daughter. -
ARCHIVED Trying To Make Lasagna Tonight And Can Not Find
tarnalberry replied to isiskingdom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a recipe for it in my "As Promised, A Few Recipes" (you can put that in the search box above) thread. I use avocado for a dairy sub. -
RLS can be more than just annoying, it can be painful. Not that your thing is RLS, but don't rule out RLS just because 'restless' doesn't say "and painful" in the name.

ARCHIVED *****fyi***********&Link to website
tarnalberry replied to mouth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"absorbed into the skin" does not necessarily mean absorbed into the blood stream and then into the intestinal tract, by the way. and there are many things which are temporarily absorbed, and later flushed back out. not to mention the fact that something as large as a gluten protein is going to need something to help it enter the skin. (patch-based medication... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else See Sicko?
tarnalberry replied to floridanative's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
one and a half of the three examples you use are not "given" to you by genetics. your genetics may predispose you to them, but they are not by any means a given if you have the genes - just as celiac isn't. taking care of yourself can indeed help keep you from developing those conditions. sure, there are purely genetic conditions - cystic fibrosis, for... -
ARCHIVED Need Snack/meal Ideas For gluten-free/cf Diet

ARCHIVED Dairy Intolerance - Calcium?
tarnalberry replied to covsooze's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
supplements are fine for a lot of it. and the calcium requirements are ... misleading. it depends a lot on the ability of your body to use the calcium and the net calcium balance. are you eating foods that make your body acidic enough that your body has to use that calcium to maintain optimum pH for enzyme activity? do you have all the other minerals...
