ARCHIVED Is Dextrin "glutenized"? What About Blue Cheese?
tarnalberry replied to anerissara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most blue cheese these days actually is NOT made with bread as a starter, and is safe, but to be sure about the brand you're buying, always call the company. There's a good chance it's gluten-free, but you have to verify. -
ARCHIVED Dealing With The Changes
tarnalberry replied to Tutahl75's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I try to deal with it in whatever way seems appropriate for the particular stress. For instance, over the holidays, with all the formal work parties (which I was helping organize), I got tired of having to time to make real food I could before or after a party, and sitting there watching others eat. So I didn't go to each and every one I could have. I... -
ARCHIVED Couple Of Questions For Now :)
tarnalberry replied to 2009's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Three Do's: 1. Do avoid EVERYTHING that contains wheat, barley, rye, or oats. To play it safe, I do truely mean EVERYTHING - ingredients, foods, costmetics, toilettries, medicines, toys (like PlayDough), etc. 2. Do eat everything else. 3. Do be patient with yourself and forgiving of slipups. If nothing else, being gluten-free will teach you... -
ARCHIVED Very New To This
tarnalberry replied to pmdny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
pmdy, Unfortunately, I want to add that you need to avoid oats as well. That list should be a good place to start. Also check out the safe/unsafe list on the celiac.com main page. It does get easier with time. I tend to stick with whole foods - nothing prepackaged or processed. It doesn't require as much cooking as you might imagine if you cook... -
ARCHIVED Soy Sauce
tarnalberry replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
LaChoy is gluten-free, but tastes crappy. San-J Wheat-Free Tamari is gluten-free and tastes good. (Be sure to look for the "wheat-free" on the label - they make two versions.) -
ARCHIVED Safe Or Not?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In addition to the contamination, another recent study (which, I believe, I found on the celiac.com main site) has shown that there are some people who do have reactions specifically to avenin (the oat protein that is similar, but not identical, in structure to gliandin, the wheat protein). Antibodies specifically addressing avenin were found in - I think... -
Calcium, if taken on an empty stomach, can make you nauseous as well. (BTW, make sure you're getting enough complimentary vits to make the calcium be of any good. Most diets (even very healthy ones, I've tried doing the calculations before) are short in magnesium, which is required for calcium to be effective for bone mass. (There are other required nutrients...

Given what gluten intolerance can do to our bowels, a little bladder trouble can seem quite polite in comparison! :-) (An attempt at a funny way to say: "No need to be embarassed, it's just a body function.") If you think your mother's case was related to vitamins, do check up on that - preferrably asking your doctor. A number of things can cause bladder...

1. The condition is genetic, but it must be triggered to be active. You may have simply not have activated it yet. 2. Yes. DH is one manifestation of gluten-intolerance, and if you don't have intestinal damage now, you'll likely develop it in the future if you don't go gluten-free. Your child shares your genes, and may have inherited a gene for gluten...

As someone trained in research, intentionally falsifying data (by someone answering incorrectly on purpose) is pretty much anathem to me. It's just all wrong. I hope no one is doing that in this case, because even though I may not think your approach is entirely logical, you have every right not to have your data messed with. Unfortunately, your data is...

The steroids doctors use are corticosteroids - not anabolic (like athletes have been known to use) - and are fairly common, though not to be treated lightly. I've had to take them a number of times for asthma, in 10 day bursts. (That's long enough to turn me quite b%$@#y, but that's not a side effect that everyone has.) I believe steroids are sometimes...

Absolutely. Untreated celiac disease causes a very large increase in risk for all sorts of intestinal cancers. Do some searching around pubmed for the numbers, if you'd like. As Merika noted, it's just one of the reasons why it's VITAL to your LIFE that you remain COMPLETELY gluten-free. I know it can be frustrating, and a hassle, but when you get a...

ARCHIVED Which Is Better? Corn Or Rice Pasta?
tarnalberry replied to mwical's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Spaghetti squash is a type of winter squash, usually available about half of the year (here in California, anyway). It has a VERY tough outside, but once you smack it hard enough to crack it open, and then steam it, the cooked flesh can be scooped out into the strands that it forms. It looks like spaghetti (hence the name), but it doesn't taste that way... -
ARCHIVED My Celiac Story
tarnalberry replied to yllehs91's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Because milk is not an ingredient in dark chocolate. The only reason real dark chocolate might have dairy is contamination on a line, and that would be small enough that there'd be no problem lactose wise. -
Pastries - the stuff you can't make quite the same without wheat. But honestly, there is very little that I want these days that has wheat. It's the lack of milk that gets to me. Soy's a substitute, but since I limit it, when soy's out, so are most decent attempts at non-dairy. (Rice milk based yogurt, non-soy non-dairy sour cream, non-soy non-dairy...

ARCHIVED Biopsy Showed "very Mild" Cd Poss. Blood Neg
tarnalberry replied to phoebebennet's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
there's no such thing as "mild" celiac. much like there's no such thing as being mildly pregnant. you are or you aren't. a biospy that shows only slight damage so far means not that you've got mild celiac, but that the damage hasn't progressed very far - yet. it may progress in you slowly, or it may only have been triggered fairly recently. but it's... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed On 1/28/05
tarnalberry replied to conrack50's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
She needn't buy speciality items - all whole, truely and completely unprocessed foods besides wheat, barley, rye and oats are gluten-free. Brown rice and beans are inexpensive, and a good source of gluten-free carbohydrates. Plain, uninjected meats are gluten-free as well, and whole fruits and vegetables are also. It means more cooking from scratch, if... -
Good luck making it through this time. I hope it passes as quickly as possible! BTW - the cinnamon altoids is gluten-free, but the peppermint is not. the company will clearly list gluten containing ingredients on the packaging, and the peppermint flavor uses wheat starch that the cinnamon ones don't.

ARCHIVED Why Small Bowel Biopsy?
tarnalberry replied to vanessa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Since technically, the way celiac is currently defined by the medical community, it has to be determined if much damage has been done to the intestines, they have to do a biopsy. Some doctors don't adhere to this technicality, and use the blood tests to suffice as markers for damage, others require the biopsy. As has been noted, it's still your choice... -
ARCHIVED Mornings.. Do U Get Sick
tarnalberry replied to roddi's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Guess I'm the odd one out. Morning's aren't a particular problem... aside from the having to get out of bed bit. -
ARCHIVED Which Is Better? Corn Or Rice Pasta?
tarnalberry replied to mwical's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Don't forget that, after a number of months being gluten-free, you may find that you don't mind some of the pastas you don't currently like. Give them a try again after a while if you still can't find one you're satisfied with. (Besides, pasta sauce over spaghetti squash is good too! ;-) ) -
ARCHIVED Organic Yogerts
tarnalberry replied to LisaP's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The ones Trader Joe's has are gluten-free, and I believe that Stonyfield is as well. I haven't seen an organic brand of yogurt that does have gluten yet, but as always, call the company with questionable ingredients. -
ARCHIVED Car Trip To G'ma G'pa's House...1200 Miles
tarnalberry replied to flboysmom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Packed sandwhiches (like PB&J) or rice cakes w/ PB. Raw, cut, and baggied vegetables and whole fruit. Nuts and dried fruit are also good. gluten-free dry cereal is good too. I've even brought the small boxed soy milks and a baggie of quinoa flakes to make in a microwave with me on trips. With fridges, leftovers can be carried with you in a small... -
Not biopsy confirmed, but I think the answer is likely yes. No, no diabetes. Female.

I wanted to comment on the mercury statement in red's post: We all run the risk, outside of vaccinations preserved with mercury, of coming in contact with mercury from thermometers/fluorescent light bulbs/some electonics (elemental metal; can be inhaled or absorbed), fish (methylmercury; must be swallowed), some button batteries (inorganic mercury compounds...
