  1. Cranberry Sunshine and Nature's Path Corn Flakes (in the bulk bag, at least) and Mesa Sunrise don't get soggy right away in milk. (Gorilla Munch doesn't get soggy very quickly either.)
  2. Some brands of rice pasta are good (I like Tinkyada), but I wasn't fond of the corn pasta I tried. Quinoa pasta is good too (it's a quinoa/corn blend). Unfortunately, different people have their own preferences, and some people may prefer brand A, others prefer brand B. Not much choice but to experiment a bit. :-)
  3. I pretty much never use rice flour in my quick breads and muffins. There are lots of alternatives if you're baking.
  4. Lol! I've reacted to Sensodyne. That wasn't a fun surprise! (I'm not that sensitive, but apparently a bit more than you. Meh... We're all different! :-) )
  5. You can do yoga by yourself, but it is MUCH safer to work with a qualified instructor who can help you with your form and a practice that is safe and suitable to you and your body. Learning to do the poses and breathing in ways that will not harm your body is important, and something only a teacher can do while you practice. (A video can help, but it's...
  6. I try to exercise every day, but much of it is indoors - weights, yoga, swimming. Sometimes I run on a treadmill, so that's indoors as well. (Walking, soccer, tennis, archery, and frisbee playing all take place outdoors.)
  7. The only thing to do with inconsistent lab tests is to try the one test that matters the most - the gluten-free diet. Try the diet - following it STRICTLY for a few weeks (at least four, preferably longer) - and see if it helps your symptoms.
  8. There are other companies that produce gluten-free rice milk (Trader Joe's and Pacific (carried in most of the stores around me (SoCal)), for instance) as well as almond milk. I haven't tried Vances, but heard on the Gluten-free Casein-free yahoo groups that it's pretty good.
  9. albuterol won't help for an anaphylactic allergy - which can cause your throat to close. (it'll help with an asthmatic reaction, that can be similar, but different.) do go see an allergist - if you have an anaphylactic allergy, you need to carry an epi-pen around with you.
  10. I'd like to also ask - if you've taken gluten OUT of your diet, what have you put IN it? Are you eating more vegetables? More fiber? More fruit? More whole grains? More beans? Take a look at what, in your diet, may be contributing to the problem, even if it's not due to an intolerance or sensitivity. (BTW, lactose intolerance can come on without notice...
  11. "limited menu" is a relative term. I don't eat much in the way of breads these days, but I do have a wide variety in my diet (and I'm dairy-free as well): smoothies, salads (vegetable/fruit/bean/green/exotic, etc), meats, veggies, stir-fries, soups, stews, mexican food, chinese food, italian food, indian food, thai food, vegetarian dishes, etc. For baked...
  12. Your best bet is to just read through as many posts in this forum, the forums on delphi, and whatever other forums you can find. There's nothing like the information you'll get in those posts as people discuss their hurdles. As for a woefully inadequate synopsis of my answers: What obstacles do people with Celiac disease face? At home - varies, depends...
  13. There is nothing magic about wheat that keeps your teeth from yellowing. Most teeth are NOT naturally _white_ anyway - the level of yellow varies from person to person naturally - and various foods (particularly coffee and tea) can stain your enamel. But no, eating gluten-free doesn't mean you'll get yellow teeth.
  14. Given that I'm sure they don't test _every_ bar (just batches), it could have been a fluke contamination or it could have been with oats or barley (which a gliandin test wouldn't have picked up). Like I said, many people haven't had a problem. Maybe I'll be brave enough to try them again. Perhaps they weren't testing when I had mine (it was at least a...
  15. They aren't produced in a dedicated facility, unfortunately. I think I reacted to one of them once, and I'm too chicken to try again, but others have enjoyed them without a reaction.
  16. You can get sunblocks that use micromilled zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (and don't use the other funky chemicals) that are fairly effective at blocking both UVA and UVB. Because it's micromilled, however, it won't make you look totally white (just a bit pale). Works great. (I use California Baby's stuff...)
  17. Actually, celiac IS something you develop. Many people who have the genes for it do NOT develop celiac. It's not caused soley by genetics, but an environmental trigger is required as well. There are a lot of theories on what the trigger(s) may be, though no conclusive evidence just yet.
  18. I've heard companies say that because they puff the grain in a facility that puffs other grains, so there could be a cross contamination issue. Yes, they're covering their butts, but for a good reason... Doesn't really help us figure out if we can have it, but it's the best they do.
  19. I agree, a positive result when changing your diet is a test in and of itself that shouldn't be ignored!
  20. Congrats! Here's towards an easier second year!
  21. I don't have a table, so amd just commenting on the percentage. Deducting the additional cost of gluten-free foods (so the price increase to buy gluten-free pasta instead of regular pasta, for instance) is - from what I've read - an option IF you are already deducting medical expenses. You can only deduct medical expenses if they sum up to, I believe, at...
  22. The panel decided that the immediate death risk exists for those eight allergens, not for barley, so it's highly unlikely it'll be added to the list. There is a provision in the bill for defining what "gluten-free" means, but this bill is not going to cover all cases. We simply don't have the immediate, serious health risk from a single exposure. (No,...
  23. I call ahead, frequent places who've worked with me, and make smart choices. At a place that I haven't talked to before, I stick with things I can be confident about the preparation (rice at a chinese place; yes, I mean plain rice) or ingredients. Salads I'm wary of, because of croutons, dressings, and other "special toppings" they might use - so I choose...
  24. Soy Delicious makes a non-dairy, gluten free ice cream that's good (at least the chocolate flavor).
  25. I wouldn't group them as they're different botanically, though I'm not disputing that someone can have problems with both. ;-) Tomatoes are a different family - acid content isn't necessarily the common factor - many other fruits/vegetables are acidic and related to neither of those. (For example, apples and apricots have a lower pH than tomatoes.) But...
