  1. Try one of two things: aloe vera - every day, or buy some carrier oil at the store (the stuff they make massage oils from) like jojoba or almond oil, and use that immediately after getting out of the shower.
  2. Exercise? Sleep? Hormone blood tests? I don't know... if it were me, I'd probably just say "I'll keep sleeping 'til the tests are over", but I blew a summer that way, so maybe not the best of advice. ;-)
  3. On the other hand, I take for granted having fresh, tasty, healthy meals every day, and other people drool over my food instead. It _can_ be a struggle, but - with time and patience and effort - you can embrace it just like any other diet. If you moved to a foreign country with a different cuisine, you're eating habits would likely change, and this... is...
  4. Gretchen, despite doing the elimination diet, I'm considering going the York labs route as well. I'm a little concerned that IgG testing still hasn't been scientifically validated, not to mention the $350 price tag... Let us know if you go through with it!
  5. I would probably avoid it. It might still have barley gluten, rye gluten, or oat gluten. Of course, you can always try calling the company and finding out what they put in it!
  6. Karen, have you determined if you have other food intolerances that are contributing to the problem?
  7. whoops... sorry for the double post.
  8. I hope it went well. I can't BELIEVE the doc didn't run a celiac panel while he was doing the other blood work. What incompetance! Bah!!! After all the testing is done (but only after all the testing is done), you might just want to try taking her gluten-free and seeing how she does.
  9. There are a couple different ways to do it. I did the hard core elimination diet where you remove EVERYTHING from your diet, aside from a few (in my case, 12, including salt and olive oil for cooking) items that have a very low chance of causing a reaction in humans. It's hard. H A R D. No candy, gum, juice, tea, grains, etc.) It's hard physically, and...
  10. Absolutely. A recent study (you can find it on celiac.com's frontpage) noted that blood tests are not as accurate as reported in literature when there is not already a fair amount of intestinal damage. Of course, you still have to hope that the doctor biopsies the right places!
  11. lol... it's funny, I read the same thing too about the "addictive" properties, and I don't know what it is about me, but I rather dislike the feeling of those sorts of drugs. I remember getting demerol in the emergency room once, and while I've heard of people loving the experience and getting hooked on the stuff, I thought the disorientation and "swimming...
  12. There seems to be a fair amount of disagreement between many doctors and all of us celiacs about how being off gluten - even for a short period of time - can alter test results. Of course, the really good celiac doctors do say not to go off it. The trouble is, she might not have enough healing in that time to make a difference on the biopsies, but she...
  13. My only non-negative test was anti-reticulin IgG. I too have heard that elevated IgG's can be related to "other things" but have still never found any actual "things" that it is related to. (I've looked... nothing...) The low gluten consumption could affect your test results, and unless you plan to get a biopsy, I can only suggest going completely off...
  14. Welcome! Good luck on the tests and biopsies, and don't forget to keep feeding her plenty of gluten until those tests are over!
  15. yep, almost all fake cheeses are not actually dairy free. bother! there's another thread on this, and someone listed a vegan cheese (and I remember seeing one at the store, but could have sworn it had casein... makes no sense, of course), but I can learn to cook around this one too. :-)
  16. If you go to the Open Original Shared Link, you can find a gluten-free guide to their products. Their soy milk and rice milks ARE gluten-free.
  17. I'm guessing that's total IgA, but it's not that high out of range. (You note that the range goes up to 235, and she's only 12 points (or around 5%) above that. Given the improvement you've seen, I wouldn't worry too much.) When in doubt (or worry :-) ) do call the doctor! :-)
  18. most of the soy cheeses are made for those who are lactose-intolerant, so they still use casein. the tricky part is that nothing "glues up" quite like casein. I found one, once that didn't have any casein and it was one of the most foul things I've ever tasted. somebody on here suggested chreese, but I haven't tried it myself...
  19. those numbers have come down quite a lot in two months. it's looking good to me. at this rate, all her numbers will be well within normal range in another two months! is she feeling mostly better?
  20. A recent study on the celiac.com main page showed that, unless there has been a decent amount of intestinal damage, the blood tests often are not nearly as reliable as theoretical numbers stated in the literature. You might check it out. If she'd been gluten-free for 9 months, much of the damage may have healed, and she didn't have enough additional damage...
  21. The real answer: there is no real answer. Studies show that the protein structure of avenin (the oat-specific gluten molecule) is only somewhat similar to the protein structure of gliandin (the wheat-specific gluten molecule). So, in theory, oats should be safe for most celiacs. Almost all clinical trials have found that many patients tolerate MODERATE...
  22. Yep. I've got an Excalibur at home. 4 drawer unit without the timer (so ~$150). While things always take longer to make that the book calls for, I love it. I don't use it as often as I'd like, but it's great. (Never could get yogurt taffy to work, but dairy's out now, so it doesn't matter! ;-) )
  23. I don't know about Trident, but Wrigley's is gluten-free. (I thought there were other ways to treat clenching, though?)
  24. a dehydrator can be useful too!
  25. lol... when I have nothing else around, it's usually rice cakes with peanut butter. very filling....
