  1. I just got a list of gluten-free foods from Kraft Foods (http://www.kraftcanada.com/assets/docs/KLG_all.pdf) and they say that their Maxwell House instant coffee is gluten-free. I had heard that all instant coffee cannot be gluten-free because of something they add on the production line to prevent clumping. Is this really gluten-free? Are any...
  2. Hi, I take an anti-convulsant medication in pill-form for a disorder that's unrelated to celiac. The medication only comes in pill form, and one of the binding ingredients is Wheat Starch. The doctor tells me the wheat starch is safe....and that in Europe wheat starch has been declared gluten-free and is allowed in all sorts of gluten-free products (eek...
  3. I've also been thinking about getting a flu shot for the first time this year, mainly because of the avian flu scare going on. I know the flu shot can't prevent the avian flu, but I'm concerned about getting avian flu while I have the regular flu. I might sound paranoid, but I live in Toronto. A couple years ago when SARS was raging in our city, I paid...
  4. It was a generic no-label brand. I should have known better. If it doesn't specifically say gluten-free, then I should run away from it...
  5. I used to always have really thick hair. Two years ago, just before getting my celiac diagnosis, my hair had started falling out. I ended up losing about 30% of it rather quickly. Now it grows much slower. Also, my hair is now very fine (almost like baby hair) and it is quite brittle.
  6. This is the first time I've used arrowroot flour...and I didn't even eat it. I used it to flour a board to prevent some food from sticking. It is pretty powdery and I ended up inhaling some of it and immediately felt that glutened feeling (for me it is a bit of a headache followed by a feeling of angry bee stings in my stomach). I didn't touch or eat anything...
  7. I can't bear that withering look coupled with those rolling eyeballs I get from certain family/friends when they 'forget' about my celiac and try to serve me something that's not gluten-free...and I have to politely remind them. I also am very tired of the lengthy conversation that always follows about 'so-what-can-you-eat-isn't-that-a-shame' and then...
  8. Hi, This is a bit long (sorry) but I'm having major teeth problems. I'm about to lose a tooth to yet another failed root canal, and I'm just feeling sick about it. I'm giong to explain what has been happening with my teeth over the last 5 years and I'd appreciate it if anybody could respond who knows what's going on, or what could be going on. Thanks...
  9. I had this problem for years.....in my case (I'm not sure if this applies to you), it was a pre-diabetic condition caused by my pancreas making too much insulin. Diabetes runs rampant in my family and usually shows up in relatives in their early 40's. I'm 38. There is something else that is very common out there, it is called Syndrome X. google this...
  10. For people who are just curious (but don't really want to know the whole story) I tell them that it is like a peanut allergy. Everyone knows someone who is, or who has a child who is allergic to peanuts. Then I tell them that having just a tiny bit of gluten is just like having one tiny peanut. This usually satisfies their curiosity and they then understand...
  11. There could also have been cross-contamination from the grill or pan where they prepared the chicken. Even something like using the same tongs to turn over the meat that they used for something else (like fried chicken). As for the sald bar.....this is just my personal opinion....but I would stay away from any sort of open buffet-style food. I have watched...
  12. You can do this (what's the alternative?). What it takes is lots of educating yourself on the ins-and-outs of this disease, and then you must be prepared. Always. Don't feel ashamed or embarrassed or sorry for having this disease. Sure it might be a bummer when it comes to things like picnics and office functions, etc. but that's all it is: a bummer...
  13. As soon as I have gluten, my stomach feels like I've eaten an entire horse and I feel extraordinarily full. My stomach starts rumbling and I will feel like I want to jump out of my skin. Within the hour I get a feeling like someone has hit me across the midsection with a big flat metal shovel. Then the cramping begins, followed by bloating, gas, and sharp...
  14. Just got a message back from MAC cosmetics stating that their Satin lipsticks do not contain gluten. Here's the exact quote: "We are pleased to inform you that the Satin Lipsticks do not contain gluten." thanks
  15. Does anyone know if MAC brand lipsticks contain gluten? I wrote to the company and am still awaiting a response...which I'll post here when I get it. In general, are there well-known gluten-free-free lipsticks/makeup? thanks
  16. Hi, I had similar episodes a couple years ago that turned out to be my blood sugar rising very quickly. This usually would happen to me following a high-carb meal. This could be your body adjusting to your new way of eating....but it could also be a blood sugar problem. It is something worth checking into, especially if diabetes runs in your family. ...
  17. Does anyone wear a medicalert bracelet for celiac disease? I'm wondering if it might help. thanks
  18. Any suggestions on what to do if a medication that is needed does not come in gluten-free form? thanks
  19. Anyone know anything about club soda, sparkling water etc, and their effect on celiacs? I've noticed that certain brands make me feel like death-on-a-stick, while others are ok. Perrier and a local generic brand seem to be the worst. thanks
  20. I have this same problem after losing 40lbs going gluten-free. I also have this thing where it feels like my tail bone is swollen (I can actually feel a roundish bump on one side). Originally I thought it was my tail bone rubbing on the chair that caused the problem, but I went to my chiropractor who told me it actually was an inflammation in the area that...
  21. Hi, I'm wondering if Lavazza pre-ground, pre-packaged espresso coffee in the blue/silver package is gluten-free. I've contacted the company, but haven't heard back yet. thanks
