Flattened villi/ villi atrophy ???
RMJ replied to Courtney541's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Flattened/atrophied villi are NOT the same thing as increased intraepithelial lymphocytes. Both are evaluated on a biopsy. This link describes the Marsh grades - looks like you’re Marsh 1? If you have celiac disease it is at a very early stage. Do you have any symptoms that led to testing? Marsh classification -
What’s a normal T-igA /iGa
RMJ replied to Courtney541's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You’re correct, labs have different reference ranges for the tissue transglutaminase IgA because they measure in different units. It would be as if one lab measured in centimeters and one in inches, but for this test the units are amounts per volume, set by each test manufacturer, so there isn’t a conversion factor between them. The total IgA test doe... -
The Shingrix vaccine contains a protein from the virus, and an adjuvant. Adjuvants are added to vaccines to increase the immune response. Because of the specific adjuvant used (AS01B) there was a concern that Shingrix could cause flares of autoimmune diseases. My doctor didn’t want me to have the vaccine until it had been around for a while - to see i...

Starting Gluten-Free Kitchen
RMJ replied to HeyMeema11's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Microwave over the oven - that makes sense! Hard to know if it’s an issue or not because it’s both hard to know what the orange gunk is, and whether it can detach. I definitely wouldn’t want steam to condense there and drip into her pasta. -
Starting Gluten-Free Kitchen
RMJ replied to HeyMeema11's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I’ll answer questions 4 and 6. 4. Disinfecting wipes will not do a better job removing gluten than dish soap. Gluten is not denatured by cleaning, it has to be physically removed. 6. If dishes are going to go into the dishwasher, yes you can wash gluten and gluten free dishes with the same sponge first. I don’t understand question 3 “cl... -
They are NOT at all the same disease. But people with one of them are more likely to have the other.

Here is a recent paper (2022) on the association between microscopic colitis and celiac disease. (Lymphocytic colitis is a type of microscopic colitis). Association between microscopic colitis and celiac disease

Can celiac come on suddenly?
RMJ replied to Orshi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I’m open to science that is contrary to the establishment’s narrative IF it is published in a reputable, peer-reviewed journal and replicated by other scientists who also publish in peer-reviewed journals. -
I trust GFCO. I had to make a complaint once about a restaurant and they took it very seriously. My antibody levels are very sensitive to gluten contamination but are ok if I stick to GFCO certified.

I’m not sure I’d agree with this phrase from the paper (in the section on intestinal autoantibodies): IF biopsy specimens were only processed to look at IgA deposits, it could be a problem, but I don’t think that is routine. Most celiac biopsy specimens are stained with dyes (for example H&E - hematoxylin and eosin - which are what give speci...

It’s a little unusual to have the TTG IgA positive but not confirmed by the EMA. They look at the same antigen in different ways. There’s no way to guess what the endoscopy will show. I had an endoscopy 4 years after trying to go gluten free. My TTG was negative, but the DGP IgA was 29 (normal 0-19). I still had damage. I hope you get a clearcut res...

Confused by test results
RMJ replied to Ned Scott's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That is odd - there should be numbers and a reference range. Here is a link to a sample report on the LabCorp website. Someone isn’t giving out the full information. LabCorp sample report -
Celiac Disease Drug KAN-101 Gets FDA Fast Track
RMJ commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Diagnosis, Testing & Treatment
One of the exclusion criteria for the clinical trial was being positive for HLA-DQ8 (DQA1*03, DQB1*0302) Does that mean the drug isn’t expected to work in these patients? Interesting. KAN-101 clinical trial More information: BeyondCeliac.org- 5 comments

Unfortunately the answer is maybe. If the Quest test is positive, it would give you your answer. If negative, it might be because your antibody levels had declined once gluten was removed. It took years for my antibody levels to all normalize, but some people recover much, much faster.

A vaccine booster challenges the immune system with a protein that the body hasn’t seen for a while, with the purpose of increasing antibodies. I envision eating gluten in the same way. Since I don’t want my autoimmune antibodies increased, I would never knowingly eat gluten-containing foods.

Update- Saw Gastro Doc Today
RMJ replied to Ginger38's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Some doctors just will not give an official celiac diagnosis without the endoscopy. Luckily, you can treat yourself with a gluten free diet without it! Due to reasons unrelated to celiac disease, I could not get an endoscopy right away. My official diagnosis was “abnormal celiac antibody panel.” As time went on my gastroenterologist considered me to be ... -
My Stomach Hates Me
RMJ replied to Ginger38's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You say you’re really trying to watch the gluten, but you just posted on another thread that you eat the toppings off of a gluten-containing pizza crust. You clearly need to be much more careful about gluten contamination. -
That is NOT a good idea if you have celiac disease. There will be a lot of gluten contamination of the toppings.

Smooth stainless steel should be fine, as should your oven. Just give them all a good cleaning.

I agree, the “jelly” is probably mucus. The large intestine can put out copious quantities of mucus if it is especially irritated. Nausea is the only celiac digestive symptom that I had.
