  1. Kathy Ann, I think it would be wise to cut out rice to see if that helps. Most people think that rice is this hypoallergenic food that can't do harm. But there are actually lots of people who can't tolerate rice, me included. When I eat rice in any form, it will give me practically the same symptoms as gluten. I know it probably isn't harming my villi, but...
  2. Hi Dustin, and welcome to this board. I used to get swollen, terribly painful glands in the back of my neck ALL the time. Since I've been gluten-free I have had that problem only when glutened (or having been 'poisoned' by something else I'm intolerant to). In fact, now that I think of it, I used to have swollen glands behind my ears and under my chin constantly...
  3. Carla is right. Forget about your doctor and go with what you've find out through enterolab. If he responds well to the gluten-free diet and has two genes predisposing him to gluten sensitivity, you know what the truth is. And you're right, it should NEVER be considered normal to have constant diarrhea.
  4. Shortening is usually used when referring to hydrogenated fats, that wouldn't be solid normally. It includes margarine. Nobody would refer to butter as shortening, as it is natural and actually, it IS wholesome (unless you're dairy intolerant, of course). Natural saturated fats are essential for all functions of your body (and lard is actually NOT bad for...
  5. Jen, after everything you said it seems insane for you to stay on a gluten diet. Of course your bloodwork was negative, you hadn't been consuming enough gluten to make it positive. And really, for some people it takes a YEAR before there is enough damage again to have a positive biopsy. It is very likely that your biopsy will be negative anyway, after torturing...
  6. Hey, where did that cute picture of you go, that was there when I answered just a few minutes ago? I liked it!
  7. Hi Caryn, and welcome to this board. It sure sounds like you may have celiac disease, especially with your family history. All the diarrhea, late onset of menstruation and then menstruating only intermittently are signs of malnutrition, and of course, celiac disease causes that. I encourage you to get tested for celiac disease. But even if those test results...
  8. Lisa, the point in you posting is obviously, that you need some encouragement. I remember that after my dad died in 1997, for years on February 15th I'd look at the calendar and think, 'oh, it's Papa's birthday, I should call him' (he was in Germany, and I am in Canada)! And then I'd remember that he was dead, and feel sad for the rest of the day. So,...
  9. I really liked almond milk when I still drank that. And yes, juice can cause reflux, it sure used to for me! And even though the last antibiotics were a while ago, that doesn't mean they couldn't still be the cause of candida now, if the problem wasn't addressed (if it is a problem).
  10. Karen, I laughed so hard (and loud) when I read about dumping the ashes into the toilet and having a 'dump' on him, I was afraid I'd wake up my family! My mother-in-law is a newfie, and boy, she has NO sense of humor at all. If somebody tells a newfie joke, she just says, "That is definitely NOT funny." And it makes me laugh even harder when she says...
  11. Daffacilly, you crack me up. I am very creative, so I could call myself a poet or artist or whatever. Steve, I have several reasons why a religious retreat is not necessarily what I want right now. There is only one non-catholic one fairly close (about one hour west of here). a) You have to be referred by your pastor, and I asked him already two years...
  12. You know, it is hard for me when people consider AS as a 'mental illness', or a disease, and treat Aspies like something is seriously wrong with them, just because they're different. Why is 'different' so often thought of as 'defective'? So, I think this list puts things a little into perspective.
  13. Well, personally I think your problem may be TOO MUCH fiber, rather than too little. Try adding more saturated fats, and drinking more water. Also, if you're still consuming dairy, that is also a possible problem, as it can be very constipating (and the same goes for soy). Plus, you may need more protein, too. Also, by just reading your signature, I saw...
  14. Oh, good grief, I guess it's possible to be glutened from my newspaper even! I'd never have guessed. Thanks for posting that.
  15. Hi Jen, and welcome to this board. Unfortunately, not only was your blood test likely negative because of being wheat free, your endoscopy will be a false negative as well. That is almost a given, and eating gluten right before the biopsy will be useless. Even eating it for two months probably won't help. Villi regenerate pretty quickly in most people, and...
  16. Right, now that I finally read your signature I realize who you are. Well, you must know that failure to thrive, reflux, sleep apnea and bad teeth are ALL possible celiac disease symptoms! Since you are cooking gluten-free already anyway, I say you better bite the bullet and make Sylvia gluten-free, too. She won't care, it's you who doesn't want her to have...
  17. Jenny, that is a VERY good, reasonable question and not at all weird. Yes, you can definitely get glutened from your dogs. Feeding your dogs gluten-free will make avoiding cross contamination a lot easier for you, and will be much healthier for the dog. Dogs have a terrible time with gluten! You'll likely add years to your dogs life by feeding her gluten...
  18. Hi Kathy Ann, and welcome to our board. What other intolerances did the ELISA test show? I get almost the same reaction I get to gluten from all grains, including rice, and from potatoes as well. If you follow the links in my signature on lectins and salicylates you may get some clues as to what your problems are. Also, at your age (which is close to...
  19. You're definitely not alone, it can take up to two weeks to feel 'normal' again.
  20. You can buy it in the health food store. It's a homeopathic remedy, you know, in the form of tiny white pills. You can't touch them (your body oil will contaminate them), but pour some (I usually use six at a time) into the lid, and pour them under your tongue, where you let them dissolve. And while you think you may have lactose issues (and it may be...
  21. Shannon, is he eating/drinking dairy? If yes, I would eliminate all dairy (and soy, if you give him any) and see if that makes a difference before trying meds again.
  22. Christine, there are several possible causes for a young child having teeth like that: Celiac disease is definitely one possibility. Fluoride is another one (yes, it can cause that, despite claims that young children 'need' it). The third possibility is called 'bottle mouth' I think, which is caused by a baby/toddler being allowed to go to bed with a bottle...
  23. Kathy, this is my take on this (and I want to clarify that it is just my opinion, and I may be wrong): You were close to being gluten-free for four years on the Atkins diet, meaning that if you had damaged villi, they could have healed in that time. During the short time you went back on gluten, the damage wasn't significant, and healed in the...
  24. Thank you, Matilda, that makes at least two of you, then (Steve and you). And knowing that you care does help.
  25. You know, Alison, your God and my God are the same (Jesus aside). So, I would definitely appreciate your prayers, too (and anybody else's prayers who feels called to pray). I certainly believe in the power of prayer.
