  1. This is a recipe for Pakora's which is an East Indian snack. They are a little like Samosa's. These are so good, I have become a Pakora Junkie.

    Pakora

    Ingredients:

    1 cup Chickpea Flour (Besan)

    2 tbsp Oil

    1 teaspoon Ground Cumin

    1 1/2 teaspoon Salt

1-2 each Chopped Green Chillies (Jalapeno)

    1/2 cupWater

    1 Potato

    1 small Cauliflower

    2 Cabbage

    5 sliced Spinach

    1 1/2 cup Sliced Onion

    Method:

Boil the potato until just tender, peel and chop finely.

Finely chop cauliflower and onion. Shred the cabbage and spinach.

Mix first set of ingredients well. Beat in a blender for 4-5 minutes to incorporate air (this will make the batter fluffier).

Let batter rest 1/2 hour in a warm place.

Add the vegetables and mix in evenly.

Deep fry in oil that is heated to 375°.

Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.

Serve with cilantro or mint chutney or tomato ketchup

  2. I always take my fruit to work. When it is food day I bring something that is gluten-free and make sure I get first scoop. That way I have something to eat. It was amazing how many people would say "why are you so fat?"

And it is usually seniors who figure they have the right to do that to people. One said that one day to a female driver I was standing with when I was driving bus. I told the woman she was heavy because we are forced to eat all our rude customers.

  3. I was impressed today. There was a company I never heard of demonstrating chocolate. Right on the info they gave out and on the boxes it said it contained no wheat or gluten. However it said,"this product is made in a facility where nuts and wheat products are produced. Due to contamination issues it is not advised for people with allergies or Celiac disease to use this product."

  4. Most people think I am 15 years or more younger than I am. My sister is 6 years younger and know one knows who is the oldest. My youngest brother who is 8 years younger, most think I am the youngest and my oldest brother they mistake for my father. My sister also looks young and so does my mother. She is 83 and many think she is 65. I think genes have a lot to do with it but I think so does the disease, although I am the only one diagnosed so far.

The last time I went to a bar I was ID'd and that was 10 years ago.

  5. Hi Lisa,

You are definitely not the only Canadian here. We have it covered from West coast to the East coast and in between. Where are you ?

There is lots of good info here, although I must admit I am jealous of the Americans for all the food choices they can get.

  6. You are too late, it floated right out of my hands all $400. You need to spend someone who has a larger families money. However, it seems in all the brilliance of our esteemed Prime Rear that they have sent ones to many across the country who have never lived in Alberta so, you could still get one.

In our utopian paradise I sat with my mother in the emergency ward of the hospital for 12 hours and no one even looked at her. She was brought in by ambulance. They were pulling people off of gurneys and putting them in wheelchairs, pushing them into the waiting room and saying, "tell us when you are sick." People were passing out in line and laying on the floor of waiting room...sick.

Karen, he can be worse. In a rapidly growing city, where I live, he refurbished a hospital for 70 million and sold it for 3 million to a private company and blew up the other one. We have 3 hospitals, none inner city in a city of over a million people. But hey, Mr. Wonderful says we will have 2000 more beds in the year 2010, some good it does now.

  7. These are great - my cheeks hurt from laughing. I really needed a laugh tonight.

You might be a Celiac if:

you have ever looked in someone else's grocery cart and thought - I couldn't eat at their house.

you have screamed from across the room "No double dipping" at an office party.

you have been asked "so are you still dieting?"

you have been asked while everyone is eating "what are the symptoms of Celiac?" and have been really tempted to tell them all the details in their disgusting glory.

making them eat a whole slice of untoasted bread should do it!

Make them eat rice bread and only rice bread. That should cure them.

When they ask what are the symptoms I ask them if they want the first 200 or would they just like 5 minutes worth. Then they ask what would happen if I eat gluten, I tell them it is graphic, their eyes pop and they look terrified and say, "I never knew it was serious."

  8. Rusla

help me with this one i need it to

Called the dentist and was on line a long time.

They know i'm allergic to latex...now learned on here that the power in the gloves has gluten.

I know they use special goves for me...are they vinyl? I think they were blue.....and what about the 'damm barrier' it's latex right?

Have you found the thread that talks about all the things we have to ck like 'what they swab on the gum before novicane, the polish, the mouth wash etc. There was a great link on here but can't find it now.

Karen sent me one but didn't have the about stuff on it.

Can you find it? I think you've been on longer than me.

    judy in Philly

sorry folks, go t off topic...

They don't use stuff on my gums because they have to put me out to work on my teeth but I will find out about gloves etc. Actually on Monday I will be calling the dentist. There are rubber damns they use on me that are no latex.

  9. I ask in Safeway to see the ingredients of dressings on their salads. I read every label and I have the greatest little book that the Celiac Association here gave me. I don't leave home without it, I do not fall off the diet ever.

However, I do get glutened by accident from desks etc but now I clean all of them at work. Every time I think I want something I shouldn't have, I remember the pain and the DH and I lose all urge to eat the wrong things. It doesn't take long before you become proficient at reading labels and knowing what you can and can't eat.

  10. I got my other doctor to do it because he was not happy with the GP doctor. Now, there is no across the board deduction, it is a medical expense and you have to make a lot of money to deduct it. As of last Wednesday, I have a new GP.

Yes veterinarians usually make their patients better or tell you if they can't. We just have to get them to change the way they take a temperature.

  11. I'm in Edmonton. You are right Calgary doesn't have any Save-On Foods. Man, I am going to have to think twice about moving back down south. I rely on Save-On for so many of my gluten-free foods. But you guys have CO-OP which we don't have up here.

Okay, I just tried a couple of bites and it is disgusting. Tastes are personal, but that was gross. You are not missing anything. That was a waste of money. Oh well.

I have been tho co-op and they have pretty well nothing. It is just dreadful. I either have to go to Safeway in Market Mall for the little bit they have or the health food stores, like Amaranth.

  12. this is in response to the Enterolab quote: I spoke to the lab after I got the new test results and since his numbers TRIPLED it is NOT the healing process "spike " that occurs.nor does my son have intestinal damage/severe malnutrition according to either test. There is no gluten (food) in my home,I work closely wih his pre-school and bring all his food. According to the person I talked to there would have to be a consistent exposure to gluten-not nessesarily in food for this to happen. My son has had Zero diarrhea for months. My son ,however, does have a lightsaber collection made from paper towel rolls. Since the Brawney rep. verified that there was definatly gluten on the rolls I am going to assume this is part of the problem. he is 4 and sometimes puts his hands in his mouth/nose. also when I called stop & shop market about Care One vinyl non-powdered gloves. They initially said no gluten but then the rep. called ME back and said they were not gluten free;which is what she was told by what ever dept. they get their info from.

I bring up the gloves because often customer service people often read from company statements Fortunatly she did a little research on her own.which is why I politely but firmly ask reps. if they could confirm that there is no gluten. Most are really nice and call me back.

Not trying to freak people out,not saying that this applies to all paper products. Seventh generation research the roll/ plates and said definately no gluten. Brawney happens to be the product I have always used.I eat the same diet as my son with the exception of coffee and gluten-free pasta sauce and my numbers went down almost to normal. So I really think the paper towels and gloves are PART of the problem. I am going thru the house room by room for possible gluten risks.

When you open a new roll of paper towels the first one or two stick because they don't want them to unravel. If you microwave with that paper towel or the last one on the roll that could get into the food if there is glu(e)ten present.

You said the vinyl gloves have gluten in them? I am going to have to check mine. I am allergic to latex so I can't have them and if the vinyl ones have gluten now I am in big trouble. That means I am glutened everytime the dentist touches me....argggghhhh.
