  1. I've always been a lunch packer, so this is old habit for me. And I agree with Nancym -- I usually make a gorgeous salad and people are always jealous. I will admit that I sometimes feel a little anxious knowing I can't have a day when I just run to the deli for a sandwich, but all the prep and hauling around of tupperwares is the norm for me. As for...
  2. What about raw veggies with hummus for a filling snack? Hummus has some carbs, but also protein and fat, so I think it's more balanced than starchy, bready things. More beans in general could be a good thing -- lentil soup is incredibly filling! If it turns out you can have any nuts, celery with nut butter is great, and they make almond, cashew, etc...
  3. Just one more possibility...I find that when I'm not getting enough protein, I feel an almost anxious need for more carbs/sugar. Sugar is also addictive for me...the more I eat, the more I want. Higher protein intake helps break me out of that cycle.
  4. That's strange...here are the ingredients of the lemonade: CITRIC ACID (PROVIDES TARTNESS), POTASSIUM AND SODIUM CITRATE (CONTROL ACIDITY), ASPARTAME (SWEETENER), MAGNESIUM OXIDE (PREVENTS CAKING), CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF NATURAL FLAVOR, LEMON JUICE SOLIDS, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM (SWEETENER), ARTIFICIAL COLOR, YELLOW 5 LAKE, BHA (PRESERVES FRESHNESS). and...
  5. OMG! That is so funny! I tuned in near the tail end of the interview. They didn't say anything about wheat allergy or celiac, but Conan made some joke about her being attacked by a wheat bagel. I thought that was weird and I joked to my BF that she must be gluten intolerant, but totally not thinking that was it. I just thought we'd missed the earlier...
  6. Thanks for the reply, nini! You have been my savior lately! I was just telling my BF that you said my high AGA IgG was enough to suggest gluten sensitivity so I wasn't crazy after all. His response? "No one thinks you're crazy, sweetie. You're not imagining the D, and if you feel better now, that's what's important." Nice guy. Back to topic...Did...
  7. I haven't, but artificial sweeteners are a common cause of diarrhea in some people. If the Crystal Light is the only time you consume artificial sweeteners, then that might be what you're reacting to. Of course, this may depend upon the nature of your GI troubles
  8. I'm curious if anyone else has had to give up citrus or other acidic foods, at least initially when getting your system back on track. I started keeping a food journal, because some days/weeks I would be great and then the D would come back seemingly out of the blue. One major variable I noticed was when I started eating an orange with my lunch each day...
  9. They aren't like Ritz, but I like Casabe Rainforest Crackers. To me, they are a more neutral flavor than Mary's Gone Crackers (which I also like) and work well as a vehicle for a slice of cheese. I've only tried the wild onion flavor, and I really like them with sharp cheddar. I wouldn't recommend these for plain cracker eating. You can see them at...
  10. I completely agree with this! I have never actually taken Immodium. At first, I always felt that if my body was having D, it was trying to flush something out, and it was a reasonable response to something and I should let it run its course. It was only when it became constant that I got worried. The doctor thought it was really strange that I wouldn...
  11. This is very interesting to me. I only had high IgG, and so my doc said there was nothing wrong with me and I should take Immodium. I decided to try gluten-free anyway, because I was desperate to feel better without popping pills constantly. My initial reaction was awesome -- my stools were better than they'd been in years. I actually realized that I...
  12. I get Bumble Bars at Whole Foods. They are different from other energy bars, in that they are literally seeds and nuts held together by a sticky rice syrup substance. They remind me of those cakes of bird feed. But they taste really yummy if you're into nuts and seeds!
  13. I gave it up before I ever got sick. My BF joked when I got sick that maybe my body needed more tequila Now I have a drink very occasionally and have suffered no ill effects...In fact, when I was on vacation and had a couple drinks that week, my GI stuff was better than ever. Maybe the BF is right...
  14. Oh, man! Why do you tell me these things? My BF jokes with me sometimes when I have a junky snack or candy by asking "Would you like some peanut butter to dip that in?" Nutella! Al, I think you and I would get along great! Now, I don't know yet how to put more than one quote in my message, but in response to mookie3 -- I'm not usually good about checking...
  15. Others are giving good advice, but since you mentioned chocolate, I just wanted to be sure to point out that chocolate is often (usually?) gluten-free. I eat chocolate everyday. The only things that are routinely non-gluten-free are things with wafers, cookie bits, or crispies in them. But you can have M&Ms (not the crispy kind), snickers, reese's...
  16. Another cereal option, though it isn't cold, is cream of rice. I've really gotten hooked on that for my breakfast lately. I've been stirring in raisins or banana and some cinnamon and sugar. When berries or peaches are in season, they would be a great add-on too. I also buy corn tortillas and rice cakes for bread-like substitutes. Also, check the...
  17. Yes, the Dove hearts are yummy. I did check the red and gold mini Reese's cups tonight at the store and they are still gluten-free (same as usual), so it's just the special hearts we have to avoid. In a way, it was okay, though, because a co-worker had brought them in and I asked if she still had the bag. She said sure, but obviously there's no gluten...
  18. I haven't yet, but I won't be surprised if I do. (I've only been at this about a month.) When I was in high school and college, I was extremely restrictive with my food intake, to the point of being really unhealthy about it. I had so many dreams about about eating something like a bagel or crackers -- things I wouldn't let myself have -- and being horrified...
  19. Hi all, This is just a warning for candy-addicts like myself. The special Valentine hearts from Reese's contain wheat flour. It's clearly spelled out on the package, but I know I sometimes forget to check when something seems safe. I don't know about the mini Reese's cups in special holiday-colored wrappers, though. The ones I'm talking about are...
  20. Wow! I never would have thought Fairbanks got that hot! We live in the SF Bay area, so we know all about that coastal climate -- never gets cold enough to snow here, but also doesn't get terribly hot in summer...summer is usually cool and foggy while the nicest days come in the fall. Sounds like Anchorage is similar, but 20 degrees colder on average. ...
  21. I certainly hope that the gluten-free diet will bring back my sex drive! Three days after I started the diet, I had a strong, burning urge, like I haven't felt in two years. My BF could totally tell the difference when we had sex, even though I hadn't told him beforehand that I was feeling something different. I haven't gotten another one of those, but...
  22. 1) Do you enjoy Indian food? No 2) If yes, how spicy do you prefer your food to be? N/A 3) Do you prefer... Vegetarian 4) Do you eat pre-packaged food? Yes 5) If yes, how do you prefer to cook your food? Microwave 6) How many portions do you prefer your food to have? single
  23. Wow! I can't even imagine what 43 below is like! Sorry to jump on your thread without any info, but I've had Alaska on the brain lately... My BF and I are toying with the idea of moving to Anchorage if his company offers him a transfer up there -- sounds like that may be the balmy tropics compared to where you are! I'm curious -- do the grocery stores...
  24. I can't do anything about the expense, but to make it last longer... I'm the only one in my house who would eat this stuff for the most part (BF eats gluten-free pasta and whatnot, but isn't really into baked goods at all, so has no interest in gluten-free versions). So, I wanted it to stay fresh, and I didn't want to feel pressure to gorge myself on...
  25. I get them if I'm brushing my teeth too fast and slip and catch my gum or lip. Without fail, a couple days later I get a canker sore in that spot. I try to use it as inspiration to brush slower... I also feel like I'm more prone to them when I'm eating too much sugar, but that could be my imagination. They are really annoying -- usually it take about...
