ARCHIVED Getting Frustrated With Daughter!shayesmom replied to Juliebove's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs This is what I dread....and that's because I KNOW that it is coming for us as well! I'm currently getting over a cooking "rut" that has lasted several months. Like you, I've also gone to that crockpot site, with mixed reviews at best. My dd goes through eating phases where she likes something and then likes nothing. She's just 5. But I see the...

ARCHIVED Behavior And Attention Issuesshayesmom replied to I hate gluten's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs About 1/2 of people with Celiac/gluten intolerance end up having a problem with dairy as well. Gluten and casein are very similar in structure. Also, without getting too far into things.....it has been my observation that many times when parents and children consistently test negative for celiac disease, that often, there's an underlying enzyme problem...

ARCHIVED Child With Neg Celiac Blood Work, But Doing Well On Diet.shayesmom replied to I hate gluten's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I have always been curious about allergies being "outgrown". My daughter no longer rashes out when she eats dairy. Instead, the issues are all behavioral and I notice problems with nightwaking, concentration, and memory. So I haven't bothered to re-test to see where she stands with that allergy because I'm still seeing symptoms that are clearly associated...

Yes, I have also seen this analogy used for food allergies and other intolerances. It's often referred to as "the bucket theory". Open Original Shared Link It would easily apply to celiac as well.

ARCHIVED Joint Pain In Children?shayesmom replied to mimommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs One of the students at my dd's school was just dx'd with Celiac (and egg and dairy allergy) two weeks ago. She has suffered for YEARS with joint pains. Already, it is getting better. So yes, it is totally possible that this was one of those "non-classic" symptoms at work. I hope your dd starts feeling better soon!

Thanks to Gentleheart for persisting and getting a handle on something that has evaded many! I am thankful that your efforts have paid off....not only for you, but for countless others who don't know where to turn and now may soon have another, more "recognized" avenue to pursue in their quest for wellness. I think you also may have inspired Dr. Fine...

ARCHIVED Doctor Says It's Toddler's Diarrhea -- I'm Not Satisfied!shayesmom replied to hypatia7777's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Wow. WAY too many vaccines in one day. It simply amazes me that the manufacturer of the MMR has on the package insert to never give chicken pox within 6 weeks of MMR and yet the same manufacturer makes a vaccine that is supposedly "safe" if the chicken pox is given in conjunction with MMR. That's just strangely contradictory to me. To the OP, my...

ARCHIVED Birthday Party Helpshayesmom replied to Caseysmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I love these ideas! This could easily be adapted for kids with multiple allergies as well! We recently had a Christmas party where the entire fare was gluten-free...and mostly dairy, egg, and soy-free. No one had a clue. Here are a few things that were served: Chicken wings Lasagna Hot dogs (sliced and wrapped with bacon strips, skewered...

I really am not certain that it has that much to do with training. But I have read that ALL children are screened for celiac disease by the age of 11 (at least in Italy). It's quite frustrating to see it get put on the back burner here. The AAP now wants to screen EVERY child for autism by the age of 2.5 because autism affects 1 in 150 kids. Yet, there...

The problem with a peer-reviewed study that involves 6 people out of the whole NFL is that even if published, there will be criticism of the small sampling. And then there's plenty of room to suggest that the condition is a temporal association. "Correlation does not equate to causation". We see that argument used constantly when it comes to parents who...

Coming in a bit late for this post, but I do have a comment. As a whole, the letter was well-written and addressed a lot of the concerns in regards to Dr. Fine's work with Enterolab. However, there were parts that could be construed as a bit accusatory in tone (the mention of "unfulfilled" promises to publish). And the simple fact that it was sent via...

ARCHIVED My Toddler Has Been Getting Into The Dog Food....shayesmom replied to Amyleigh0007's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I have to agree with everyone else here. It's safer for your daughter if you switch to a gluten-free dog food. And it will be healthier for your dog as well. As a side note, did you know that Celiac Disease has been found in dogs as well?

ARCHIVED He's Using The Regular Toaster For Her Bread! (vent -- Long!)shayesmom replied to Sailing Girl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs If it's possible that he is just "lax" because that's his nature, then I would suspect your best ally here would be your dd. Perhaps if she were to tell him that he needs to be more careful and that she tell him she feels sick after each time being there....he may be motivated to get his act together and take it more seriously. Having his child tell him...

ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?shayesmom replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Your post sharply reminds me of the 6+ months of hell we went through with my daughter once all the testing began. To this day, I will never understand why doctors refuse to follow up testing with the diet....just to be sure. I am so thankful for the one woman who spotted this in our daughter. Without her knowledge and intervention, things would have been...

ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?shayesmom replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I think that the "alternative" viewpoint you are mentioning is one that is very well represented at every medical clinic any of us have gone to while on our journey to be diagnosed. The 9-11 YEAR average of misdiagnosing this issue and the staggering amount of human suffering this statistic represents is precisely why the majority of this forum opts for...

ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?shayesmom replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs As an interesting side note....I was recently on a parenting board where a mother had her 2 year old son undergo an endoscopy. Villous atrophy was present suggesting an autoimmune condition (as per the GI). Was it Celiac? The GI didn't test for it (despite "classic" celiac symptoms). Instead, the GI is now pushing for a small intestine transplant. ...

ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?shayesmom replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Sonia, I really feel for you as I know where you are right now....I was there with my dd nearly 5 years ago. My dd tested negative on the blood panel and we didn't do the biopsy. Sorry, but multiple food allergies (egg and soy....fun for anaesthesia) and then other chemical allergies really made sedation a high risk proposition for us. At the time...

ARCHIVED New To Board And Newly Dxshayesmom replied to Allysmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Disney is by far one of the best places to go when on a "special" diet. We took my dd there when she was 3 and had no problems being accomodated. And we are not only gluten-free, but soy, egg and dairy-free as well. Pretty much every restaurant in the park can accomodate your dd. The only thing that they ask is that you give them a head's up as to...

ARCHIVED Help Interpreting Scratch Test Results!shayesmom replied to 2sensitivekids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs LOL! Here's the recipe. I recommend spending some time on the glutenfreegoddess site. Since she's been diagnosed with new food allergies, she's come up with some awesome substitutions for recipes. I'd also recommend looking at the recipes supplied on the paleo diet sites. They always use ground nuts in lieu of harder to find gluten-free flours. Dark...

ARCHIVED Looking For Shopping Tipsshayesmom replied to tj's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I'd also suggest shopping on line for some items. Places like v.i.t.a.c.o.s.t. and supplement warehouse or even a.m.a.z.o.n. are great when you're on a budget. The prices are often half of what they'd be in a health food store and you don't have to drive 3 hours to get there and back (this was especially helpful when gas prices were up and places like Whole...

ARCHIVED Rice Dream?shayesmom replied to sarahelizabeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My daughter reacts to it as well. I find it less frustrating to just avoid the company entirely.

ARCHIVED Help Interpreting Scratch Test Results!shayesmom replied to 2sensitivekids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I believe that with a score of 2+, it is warranted to avoid that food item. When you get into the 3's and 4's, then you're looking at serious and potentially deadly allergic reactions (at least according to some of the tests I've seen done). With that said, I think that there may be different "scales" that the tests are interpreted by. Considering...

ARCHIVED Picky Eater Who Has Celiac Age 11 Just Found Outshayesmom replied to Charron's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Looking back, I think that one of the most difficult things to deal with was the shift in attitude that needed to occur once we went gluten-free. In our case, at first, I tried changing out our "normal" foods for gluten-free ones. And some of the substitutes were just nasty! We relied too heavily on using bread or "breaded" products because that was how...

ARCHIVED Am I Overreacting?shayesmom replied to kbdy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs It's quite common in the beginning to think of this disease in terms of "ingested" food only. But if you get your dd tested regularly, you will most likely find that her numbers will not go down as long as she is in environments where gluten is highly prevalent. My dd could not be in the same room where regular flour is used for play...or oatmeal for that...
