  1. I've been gluten free (trying) since the day after Thanksgiving. Although I don't intentionally eat anything with gluten, I'm sure I've gotten some thru additives or some such. I'm also trying to work out what other sensitivities I may have. Dairy, for example, has always seemed to bother me. I don't know if that is all on its own, or as a result of untreated...
  2. I guess what I'm missing more than any one particular thing is just the ability to eat whatever I felt like without thought. Now, everything has to be examined. I was looking in my cookbooks today and I realized that about 95% of what I used to make is now off-limits, especially in my current situation where I'm unsure of what all affects me, but it seems...
  3. I stopped in my local gastroenterologist's office today...where I had a colonoscopy a few months ago. I asked if anyone knew much about/treated/could diagnose celiac disease. Answer: Well, yes, they've studied celiac disease, they know about it. They test by doing a biopsy, or the endoscopy as well, sometimes blood tests. Not that they have any patients...
  4. Just curious...which of the Enterolab tests did you get, and how long to get your results? Also...I find it a bit disappointing that they would send out these results without a "layman's" translation of what it all means!
  5. I keep reading here about all the hoops....expensive hoops people jump through to get a diagnosis....various blood tests, biopsy (which is invasive and could in rare instances cause a perforation), etc. etc. Yet, supposedly the stool test is almost 100% conclusive, so why doesn't everyone go that route? Am I missing something here?
  6. I think I remember reading somewhere that humans are the only living beings that drink milk past infancy. Interesting to think about.

    ARCHIVED Balsamic Dressing

An Italian chef I know said to be a true Balsamic vinegar it must say "Modena" on the label. There are Balsamic vinegrette mixes out there, and of course you must avoid those. My favorite salad dressing is extra virgin olive oil and Balsamic vinegar, nothing else. Yum! By the way, Cosco sells a HUGE bottle of Balsamic that is great...it lasts forever...
  8. Where do you locate a naturopath? I checked my phone book, and couldn't find anyone listed as such.
  9. I've been trying to find out about testing, which way to go, and how to get the most "bang for my buck" in this whole thing. I've contacted Enterolabs a couple of times with my concerns....specifically about testing given the fact that I have been gluten free for 2 weeks now, the apparent unreliability of blood testing to reveal the presence of celiac, and...
  10. I haven't done any tests yet, but I also had all the symptoms except for weight loss. I started a gluten free/dairy free (mostly) diet the day after Thanksgiving. I also eat virtually no sugar. I definitely noticed a big difference within a few days, although I still don't feel perfect. You mentioned the South Beach Diet.....I'm more or less doing Atkins...
  11. I was looking at the Enterolab website and their various tests. It seems that quite a few of you have been diagnosed thru them....I'm wondering what the general consensus is about the validity of this sort of testing. Is this medically "valid" or is this type of testing still kind of "out there"??? It certainly seems that the blood tests look a bit "iffy...
  12. I'm using one of Swanson's Premium Brand Echinacea with Goldenseal Root. The bottle claims the only other ingredient is gelatin. In my family, we all think it can nip things in the bud. The jury is out on the astragalus, but it's interesting. This was my first experience with it recently.
  13. Well, I've felt like I was coming down with a horrible sore throat...felt like strep throat or something. I could hardly swallow, felt like there was a lump in my throat. At first I thought it was perhaps reaction to going totally off gluten because this started about 4 days after that....and oddly, taking 2 Advil helped, but at that point I was taking...
  14. Just talked to my mom...she ate an Amy's gluten free pizza w/rice crust yesterday, and was horribly and violently sick all night. I'm wondering if Amy's can be trusted to be gluten free.
  15. I was thinking back to how I felt eating certain things, and one thing I'd notice with a lot, but not all bread products, is that they would almost burn going down. I especially noticed this with things like a hamburger bun. It seemed like it was WHITE flour things that did this. Very odd...has anyone else had something similar to this?
  16. In the book "Dangerous Grains" they discuss a Dr. Reading who, in the late 80's, had a group of about 100 people who had what was assumed to be lupus, and they had all the lupus symptoms. Dr. Reading completely eliminated all grains from their diet (except rice and corn), and he also eliminated milk and alll dairy as well. They were all CURED of their lupus...
  17. They don't seem to do the full, continually updatable product for Macs. They did have a $14.95 one for Mac, a one-time thing current as of mid November. I downloaded that via dial-up and it was not very long to download. However, I'm somewhat disappointed because quite a lot of things I wanted to check were NOT on the lists at all, and I was surprised...
  18. Secondly..........everytime I have Hunts tomato paste/sauce I get that uh oh feeling in my stomach and spend quite some time in the bathroom....everything seems harmless in the label, but this has happened like four or five times....any one know anything?? For years and years I've noticed that COOKED tomatoes seem to upset me terribly...for example...
  19. I got some cookies at the Health Food store...Mi-Del brand, ginger snaps, with HUGE letters on the front blaring out GLUTEN FREE!! WHEAT FREE! Then way at the bottom in the allergy warning area it said "Made in a plant that also processes wheat products." So what does that mean? Do any of you eat these when they have that warning? It didn't have...
  20. How about that Enterolab stool test?
  21. WOW, I could have written this...exact same circumstances for me. I've had stomach problems since birth, but I think my main trigger event was the same thing you describe above--to the letter. This happened 5 years ago, but the worst reactions have actually been the last few months, for no particular reason. My mom's celiac trigger was a hysterectomy,...
  22. We know the obvious things to avoid. But now I'm reading that gluten can be in make-up, shampoo, mouthwash etc. Is there a recommended book, a list somewhere that details all the things to watch out for??
  23. I've been totally and carefully gluten free for 6 days now. I felt hugely better after just one day, and at that point had already lost 1.5 lbs. of bloat which I'd been unable to budge for a good 6 months or more. By day 2 I noticed all stomach bloating and gas has disappeared. I had mild headaches on waking up for several days, but that is gone now. ...
  24. and how do you feel about it as an accurate measure of your condition?
  25. Well, I don't know if all this is connected, but when I had this weird incident 2 weeks ago, I got suddenly very dizzy, almost vertigo, very nauseated, and this lasted for 4 or 5 hours. During that time I tested my bp and it was way up over what it usually is. I still don't know what was going on, but since I had really been on a gluten orgy that day and...
