  1. Thanks for asking. He has a nasty virus that's going around. His fever was just about gone, but now it's back up to 100, so no school again tomorrow. Since it's a virus, there isn't anything really to do except wait it out. I'm keeping him well hydrated, giving him vitamin C and oil of oregano, good healthy low sugar food and just letting him rest. So...
  2. This is all very interesting to me. I'm definitely not knowledgable about genetics, but have a theory that DQ2 and 8 are the genes that predispose someone to have intestinal damage with gluten intolerance. Since the intestinal damage seems to be the easiest thing to test, it's what gets a diagnosis. My son is double DQ3, subtype 7, so I know that I have...
  3. Shirley - I keep forgetting to tell you how cute your avatar is. You're quite talented! How big is the real thing? How nice that you're getting a nice sunny day! It looks like we might have the same here. Momagn5 - Welcome! We'd love to have you. Having the accountability has been very helpful for me. I'm always thinking, "If I eat this, I have...
  4. Kat - glad to see you're still with us. Stick with it - I'm sure you'll be able to kick the habit. And yes, I've lost inches - actually a whole pants size! Shirley - your dog show sounds like so much fun! I wish you lived closer so I could get some help. I don't know why it's so hard to train a dog. My children are well-behaved and polite - why can...
  5. Thanks. That's very interesting. I've read that DQ3, sub. 7 is almost exactly like DQ8 - I wonder if that's the key. My double DQ3-7 son is very gluten intolerant and it affects his digestive system and his behavior. His tests came out negative, but I think there wasn't enough damage done to show positive, since he's been gluten lite for most of his life...
  6. So what are your genes? I don't have DQ 2 or 8, but I swear I have Celiac (just not willing to do a gluten challenge to prove it). I have at least one copy of DQ3 subtype 7 (my son has two copies of it, so one had to come from me).
  7. Hi everyone, Hope you all had a good weekend. Deb - funny about the sign language thing. How cool that you're an interpreter! We used to have deaf neighbors and I learned a lot of signing, but they moved and I've forgotten a lot of it now. My daughter made the cheer squad, so she's happy. They seem to be a nice group of girls. My son is sick...
  8. I worked out and ate well today, but I'm so sad that my team played badly and lost this afternoon. We ended up in a three-way tie for first place, and the league coordinator drew names out of a hat to determine "seeding" for the tournament and we drew #3. So we play a team that we've beaten twice, but they'e really good and definitely out to get us. ...
  9. She finds out on Saturday. No workout today - too tired after working and running errands and making dinner, etc. Still have to take the dog for a walk though, so will make it a long one. B - Buckwheat toaster waffle with a smidgeon of applesauce S - handful of almonds L - apple with 2 Tbs almond butter, carrot sticks, grapes S...
  10. My son reacts to these - even before we knew he was gluten intolerant. I thought it was the large amount of MSG in them. I don't trust anything with that many ingredients in it.
  11. We've had lunch troubles too, but my non gluten-free son is the worst. He only wants hot lunch at school, but it's really expensive and totally garbage, so I only let him get it a few times a month. My gluten-free son is a bit easier. They both took gluten-free lunches today - 12 year old: 2 slices deli turkey, rolled up baggy of Fritos banana...
  12. Hi everyone! Hope you're all doing well. Got another good workout in today and didn't have a chance to eat much between running errands, working and getting my daughter to cheerleader tryouts. B - handful of almonds and 1/4 apple L - 1/2 avacado, 10 rice crackers, carrot sticks, banana, 2 Tbs almond butter D - 3 oz ground turkey patty with a...
  13. With regular rice I use the 2 to 1 method, but basmati rice is a bit different. You shouldn't use as much water or it will get mushy. Basmati rice is meant to be more firm - it will taste better that way.
  14. An easy way to make basmati rice: Mix 1 C Basmati rice, 1-1/2 C water, 2 tsp. olive oil and 1 tsp. salt in a pan on the stove. Bring to a boil, stir occasionally. As soon as it starts to boil, turn the heat down to low, cover tightly and don't open it for 20 minutes. You can also double or triple this in a bigger pan. I usually rinse the rice until...
  15. I agree! This is about the only thread I come on here for anymore and I really appreciate the support and accountability. Yes, my body requires hi protein, low carb. If I ignore this to much I will wind up w/ a blood sugar that spikes into the 300's then dives to 30. When measured at 30 I was still concious (I have passed out from it). Fortunately...
  16. Hi Everyone! I'm at work, so this will be short. Deb - so sorry to hear about your grandmother. My condolences to you and your family. Kat - I hope you stick around and don't disappear. Maybe we can be the weight loss and smoking-craving loss thread! Autumn - glad to hear that you're better. Everyone else - I'm happy to see everyone...
  17. Hi everyone! I just got back from another good workout. I love the machines at that place. They tell you exactly how many calories you're burning based on your weight and age. I burned 211 calories just on the eliptical thingy (kind of like cross country skiing). But now I need a shower before bed. My daughter is so excited - the chiropractor told...
  18. Tanya, thanks for updating us. It's so good to hear that Megan is doing so well!

I would guess dairy. It sounds like what I used to experience when I tried to eat cheese and yogurt. (I don't try anymore.) You might think about eliminating dairy for a few weeks before scheduling any more invasive tests. If avoiding dairy (maybe soy too?) doesn't help, then go ahead with the tests. Does he itch? Is that why his hands go down the back...
  20. I just spent 20 minutes typing a post with all personal messages and lost it. Arrgghh Let's see if I can try to remember all of what I said. Kat - It's nice to see what you look like! Your hubby looks like a wonderful guy. Interesting that your doctor told you to be on a low protein diet for your MCD. Mine told me to eat MORE protein. I don...
  21. Jerry, You could always follow my doctor's advice - "Eat anything you want. Anyone who tells you to avoid certain foods is a quack. We have all kinds of medications to help any problems you have and there's no need to change your diet."
  22. Hi everyone! I just got back from working out again - I LOVE our new community center! I've been there 4 out of the past 5 days and gotten a good workout each time. There's something about good exercise that makes me want to eat healthy too. B - 2 Tbs raisins and a small handful of almonds L - Stir-fried chicken breast (about 2 oz), with onion...
  23. If you pre-cook them for about half the time, they won't fall apart and they'll cook faster in the oven. Also - add some olive oil to the boiling water just before adding the lasagne noodles and they won't stick together.
  24. The bloated feeling could be coming from soy. I weighed myself this morning too. I'm down almost 3 pounds! So I've lost about 6 since we started this thread. I know that the first 5 pounds come off the easiest, and I'll probably settle into losing about 1 a week after this, but I'm excited. Clothes are starting to fit just a bit better. I'm down...
  25. Fiddle-Faddle is right. I've been fanatically gluten-free for almost a year and a half (after being "mostly" gluten-free for almost 10 years before that) and I just needed to reduce my thyroid dosage. I'm already on a fairly low dose to start. It's "normal" to have to keep upping your dosage every few years - my mom, sister, MIL and SIL have all had to...
