  1. Yep, I agree. And it's fact, not opinion, that wild dogs (wolves, coyotes, etc) eat predominantly raw meat and bones. Our puppy has been on a mostly raw food diet since he was 8 weeks old. His gas mostly went away, his teeth are gorgeous - the vet has commented twice on that, his coat glistens and he doesn't have bad doggy odor or breath.
  2. No way! You need to find something that everyone will eat. And if they won't eat it - let them make their own! I have 4 kids and this is our rule. My oldest is 15 and my youngest is 9 and there are times when they have a PB and J for dinner, but I'm not making 2 meals! That said, I do try to stick with kid friendly food to start with. (My hubby was...
  3. Hi everyone! Yes, please call me Liz! I'm glad I came on today - I was just feeling frustrated, since I gained my lost pound back and was going to forget the diet for today. It's not too late to get back on track, so I'll buck up and behave for the rest of the day. My daughter (and I) had a game at 8:40 this morning, so we were up early for a Saturday...
  4. Way to go Sally! You've won already, even before the race starts. I do small (sprint) triathlons and I KNOW how much you must have been training. Congratulations on overcoming all you've been through and being ready for this challenge! Best of luck to you and I hope you have a great experience!
  5. Shirley - I just said a little while ago that we needed a chisel! The kids were trying to cut pieces off with a butcher knife and not getting much more than shavings. I've been good and not had even a taste today! BTW - what is the significance of your screen name? I had a busy day again though and weird eating. I coach our middle school girls' basketball...
  6. Shannon - Good for you to be so disciplined! You should be proud of yourself. Yes, with your menu I can tell you're from the south! Mayflowers - don't even get on the scale until weigh-in day. I'm sure you'll be back down. Viola - I'd go for fish and chips too! I've had them once in the past 11 years and they were yucky . You're welcome to...
  7. I REALLY believe that you can have a huge problem with gluten and not be Celiac. "They" just don't have the correct tests yet. I too had MANY Celiac symptoms that vanished on the gluten-free diet. I never knew much about Celiac until I'd been wheat free, extremely gluten light for almost 10 years. I (and my doctor) wanted to know for sure if it was Celiac...
  8. I don't know anything either, but wanted to extend good thoughts and prayers for your mom and for you.
  9. I've been pretty good today so far, but I'm a little distressed. My hubby came home at lunch and left a bouquet of roses and a TEN POUND BAR OF DARK CHOCOLATE on the table for me to find after work. My 13 year old did the math and figured out that it has over 25,000 calories and will make "someone" gain over 7 pounds. I consider this sabatoge!
  10. I'm not trying to be nosy, but do I understand you to say that he is adopted? From the US or internationally? I only ask because my youngest son is adopted from Russia and I've run across several families with Celiac children who have been adopted from Russia. My son had a celiac panel done and it was negative, but I still wonder about him.
  11. I totally understand your surprise and frustration. Two of my children and I are definitely gluten sensitive, but all the traditional tests showed negative. (Of course, I can't figure out why my doctor even ordered testing for me when I'd been wheat-free for almost 10 years and had barely eaten gluten that whole time.) Anyway, my doctor was curious and...
  12. Hi all. I'm late getting on too. Shirley - now I can place where you are - I had friends in college who were from Castlegar! You must live easy driving distance from there? I'm on a no will-power roll here. I do well for part of the day and then it all falls apart. B - one roll from Pamela's mix with butter, handful of almonds, about 1/2 C applesauce...
  13. I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but does everyone know that there are two (at least) types of quinoa that are readily available? The first is the grain, that you would make pilaf or salads out of. This is what you need to rinse before using. It would make disgusting breakfast cereal. The second type is the quinoa flakes, which look like little...
  14. Hope you all had a great weekend! I did pretty well, but I did have a few treats. My kids are a bad influence on me! I have lost 1 whole pound though, so it couldn't have been that bad. Hubby and I had a gift card for a nice seafood restaurant and we went last night to avoid the Valentine rush. The waitress volunteered to get the manager when I started...
  15. Wait, what am I missing? What's a turkey shoot? Jerry - you're in good company with the spelt. I thought it was okay for me too after avoiding wheat for about 7 years. It just about killed me.
  16. Autumn - I just checked my rice protein powder. It says corn free right on the label, as well as gluten, soy and dairy. It's Nutribiotic vegan rice protein powder. I got it at the health food store. Shirley - sounds like you're catching up with me for busy-ness! How nice that you quilt! I made one once for my mom and it was such a big job I've never...
  17. Another busy day for me. I was at a teachers' convention today (and will be tomorrow) and got home just in time to change clothes and go coach basketball for my 13 yo daughter's team. Then my 15 yo daughter wanted to go to her school's last game, so I drove her there and didn't get back until 9:30. I'm off to walk the dog in a few minutes before falling...
  18. Okay, it's 10:35 and I'm late to bed, but had to fess up to my "bad" day. It seems like you all are doing so well. B - I honestly can't remember if I ate anything as I was running out the door. Three of the kids and I were frantically packing lunches, so we all had good ones. I did have a glass of water with my thyroid medication. I don't usually...
  19. Actually, this kind of concerns me. I've been fanatically gluten-free for about 15 months and I've been wheat free and very gluten light for almost 11 years. And, I don't actually have Celiac - I don't even have the right genes, so I shouldn't even have had intestinal damage. And to top it off, I've been taking cod liver oil off and on for a few years...
  20. My doctor tested me for vitamin D deficiency last week and just called to say that I need to take 2000 mg/day of Vitamin D. This probably explains why my psoriasis has been worse, but I don't seem to have any other symptoms. Has anyone else had this? I've been gluten free for quite a while, but now I'm wondering if I'm having some type of malabsorption...
  21. You're funny! This is just normal for me. This is part of my problem - I get so tired that I don't have enough energy to get real exercise, although I am about to go take the dog for a walk before going to bed. And I get so hungry by the time I get dinner ready that if I'm not careful I'll eat several hundred extra calories by snacking while I'm cooking...
  22. Another day on the run - life with a 4 kids and a job gets hectic! I'm only supposed to work half-time, but my job-share partner was sick yesterday and I had to cover for her. Today was my half-day: ran errands in the morning, then taught a PE class, taught 5th grade band, drove 45 minutes round trip to pick up my daughter from high school, then coached...
  23. Sometimes I get frustrated that my diet is limited. And somedays I feel like it stinks. But for the most part, I'm thankful to be healthy. I'm supposed to be in a wheelchair, but changing my diet helped me to get healthy again, so I see it as freedom. I was an athlete growing up and I'm a PE teacher and basketball coach now, so I'm VERY happy that I escaped...
  24. It's very possible that you could be gluten sensitive. And I agree that you DON'T need gluten grains to be healthy. I've been off wheat (and eaten very little gluten) for almost 11 years now and am healthy. If you feel better gluten-free or gluten "lite" then stick with it. It will help your step-son too to see that he's not the only one eating that way...
  25. Yeah, I buy a LOT of chicken and turkey. We don't eat much red meat (makes my psoriasis break out and my teen age girls won't eat it) and even hamburger is more expensive here than chicken or ground turkey. I use ground turkey in everything that most people use hamburger in. I can sometimes get it on sale for as little as $1/pound. I stock up on chicken...
