  1. Word! For me, I KNOW that these foods are bad for me. Really really bad. Poinonous. 200x more chances of gastrointestinal cancer. Scar tissue in my intestines etc. But then I walk past a Cinnabons or a Subway Sandwich shop and that aroma calls to me like the Sirens to Odysseus. It's like being really really sexually attracted to someone who has a nasty...
  2. Neicey, I don't know how to sugarcoat this, but your mother just sounds like an #$%hole. I don't think Celiac awareness is the issue here. My mother gives me a hard time about Celiac. She doesn't believe that Celiac exists, it's all in my head, and can't understand why I am refusing to eat gluten and blah blah blah. She drives me crazy. However, whenever...
  3. Woo! Brooklyn! I'm from Boerum Hill! I, too, am a total chauvinist about the quality of pizza and bagels in Brooklyn (and all of NYC, for that matter). Nothing can compete. Even as a celiac, I take pride in these forbidden foods from my hometown! And that's why I just don't do the gluten-free alternatives. If it's not going to be that good, why...
  4. It's funny to read what you just posted! I almost had the exact same experience this morning. I have been on this "better safe than sorry" regime lately where all I eat for breakfast and lunch is cottage cheese and fruit. Everything else I eat that's sold or served near my job has at one point glutenized me so I'm sticking closely to what I know. So...
  5. Risotto Kozy Shack Tapioca Pudding (and Rice Pudding!) Haggen Daz Ice Cream Bars St. Andre Triple Creme Cheese (like Brie only better!) Mashed Potatoes
  6. LOL! I totally share your frustration with the fact that flour is in everything... ....but a banana dusted with flour and then deep fried would taste really really good. Especially with a caramel sauce and some vanilla ice cream. I just spaced out for ten minutes thinking about it. Of course you could substitute corn starch or rice flour and accomplish...
  7. Wow. I really didn't think it had anything to do with the Thai Kitchen products I always eat. But now that you mention it.... Thanks for the heads up!

The thing that I've always noticed about Burger King -- having eaten there a lot back before I realized I was Celiac -- was that they are always changing their formulas and methods. While McDonalds test markets the hell out of its products and then more or less sticks to a tried and true method forever, Burger King is constantly switching gears. I've seen...
  9. What has me reaching for the Xanax are those times that I get glutened accidentally and I simply NEVER figure out how. Seriously. I'm single and I live alone so I have a gluten-free kitchen that really can't be contaminated by anyone else but myself. This weekend I didn't go out for any of my meals. I stayed inside and cooked gluten-free food for myself...
  10. I never condemned the book. I merely pointed out that it's simply a book. All of the data that you are quoting is from this one book. Just because someone "wrote a book" at some point doesn't make his views indisputable. There are dozens of books, for instance, claiming that the holocaust didn't happen. Okay, but do you even realize that lots...
  11. Oh, I didn't think you were knocking anyone for anyone for eating Snickers. I was just worried for a moment there that Snickers contained gluten. I, too, have eaten a lot of Snickers Bars since going gluten-free and when I first read your post, I was like "uh oh!" The thing you might want to keep in perspective is that a lot of people who are Celiac...
  12. A friend of mine who is a waiter once said to me that waiters often have to deal with rudeness because hungry people are irritable and rude and want to take it out on someone -- preferably a stranger. It sounds to me like your husband has a firm grasp on your limits as a Celiac. But when he's hungry and he wants to eat and you are (justifiably!!!!!...
  13. Within the last year or so, I was reading some article about Harvey Weinstein -- the guy who runs Miramax films. Harvey is legendary for having a temper (and that's putting it mildly!). Lately he's been noticeably mellower and he has said in interviews that he attributes his newfound state of mind to his "low carb diet." Of course when I was reading this...
  14. I read over on Delphi that some Butterball turkeys come with a gravy mix packet that isn't gluten-free. It's sealed and everything so if you throw it out and don't actually use it, it's not going to contaminate you. Could this be where the confusion is coming from?
  15. Then maybe this is simply an issue of semantics. Less than 1%, to me, is rare. (Statistically, it's said that one out of every thirteen men are secret crossdressers. Is cross dressing considered common?) And as far as undiagnosed cases go, every disease is underdiagnosed. There are lots of people who don't know they are suffering from diabetes, HIV,...
  16. 1 in every 133 people? Less than 1% of the population? That's rare. Sorry. And if your mom's husband has eczema and diarreah after every meal, he obviously has a problem. Those were my exact symptoms. Just because your mom's husband doesn't identify himself as celiac or gluten intolerant, doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of people in this world...
  17. Okay, then. Let's use logic: There are millions of perfectly healthy people on this earth that eat this new "dangerous" strain of wheat on a regular basis and aren't getting sick. I wish I were one of them, but I'm not. The basic truth of the matter is, there are lots of foods out there that not EVERYONE can eat. Wheat is one of these foods. Celiac...
  18. Wait, what's wrong with Snickers Bars? I mean, besides the whole "candy on an empty stomach" thing. Are we talking gluten here or just semi-crappy nutrition? And are you "angry" or simply hungry? I do think it's notable that you mention Snickers. Not to sound like the ad, but they are "packed with peanuts" and maybe you are reaching for them because...
  19. It's funny. Back when I thought I only had a wheat allergy, I used to eat oatmeal and never had a reaction. Now that I think about it, I only ate McCann's. I didn't know it was "safe", I just liked the way the can was designed.
  20. I seem to have a corn intolerance in addition to my good 'ole gluten intolerance. Everything I've read about corn insists that corn doesn't contain gluten and corn intolerances are very rare. Yet I react to things like Heinz ketchup (because of the high fructose corn syrup, I imagine) and last night I got sick after making myself a batch of gluten-free...
  21. Man, I thought this thread was going to be about Dove Ice Cream Bars. I had eczema all my life and have seen a lot of dermatologists and at some point in the eighties, they were all telling me to use Dove. "Don't use Ivory! Ivory is irritating!" Despite the ringing endorsement, I never really liked Dove soap -- it was kind of irritating. So I...
  22. I certainly don't feel that anyone has been preaching anything to me, but I do feel that the whole "wheat is bad for everyone" argument smacks of sour grapes. Literally, the fox can't reach the grapevine so he assumes that the grapes that evade him are probably sour anyway. And I sympathize: this disease is very isolating and it's very tempting to start...
  23. I'm probably in the minority here, but I think wheat is a good thing...if you're lucky enough to be able to eat it. Sure, the USDA probably has inflated it's importance, but it's been around forever and there are even plenty of cultures that survive on nothing but bread. It's in the Bible. (Not that the Bible is the last word on everything, but still....
  24. I like that suggestion best of all...for some reason. (By the way, Poker, which vodkas are potato? It seems that the "better brands" are all grainbased.) Any thoughts on why modern science hasn't invented something (preferably OTC) that will minimize (or totally negate!) the damage that an accidental glutening causes? Like, if you're lactose intolerant...
  25. Merika, the part of that story that really resonated with me was that it was new neighbors (or neighbors you don't know yet...) I really sympathize with the fact that you didn't want to refuse their offering or act like it was radioactive and put it far far away from the other foods. It's one thing if it's a relative or a good friend and you can explain...
