I've never eaten at an Olive Garden but it's always been my experience that Caesar Salads are served with croutons. And even if you order it without croutons, if you don't explain why, they might simply pick the croutons off of an existing Caesar and serve it to you. (And they might do that even if you do explain your sensitivity to gluten which is another...

ARCHIVED Wonderful Dining Out Experience
CeliaCruz replied to bklynceliac's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hee, I live in Brooklyn and go home to Boston often where I persuade my family to have gluten-free meals with me at Legals. And, yes, we go to the one at the Chestnut Hill Mall. Are we the same person? I love Legals. They always treat me well and make me feel safe. -
Now I'm confused. Grey Goose is a wheat vodka, no? So why would Absolut make you sick and not Grey Goose? (Watch, I've just psyched you out!) Luksusawa is a potato vodka and it's slowly becoming more and more available in the states. I keep a bottle in the freezer.

ARCHIVED Eating At Restaurants With Gluten Free Menus
CeliaCruz replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I figure that once I've asked for the gluten-free menu, I've brought the issue to their attention. As far as a manager goes, I find that restaurants that have gluten-free menus are usually places that train their employees well and you're not going to be dealing with a 20 year old who thinks you said "glucose." Maybe at a non-celiac friendly restaurant... -
Their cookies (choc chip, choc choc chip and cinnamon raisin) and brownies are the best thing they make there. I also love their poppy seed cake.

I have never had a problem with Mango chutney mayo, Green Olive mayo, Lemon Dill Mayo and Especial (Ketchup, Mayo and raw onions, so good!). I read somewhere that "most" of their sauces are gluten-free. I tried to get clarification about which ones but no one knew anything. However, the four sauces I mentioned above never did me any harm and I suspect...

ARCHIVED Anything You Can Order Where You Don't Have To Talk To Chef?
CeliaCruz replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Risotto. Just beware of added sausage. -
I just got diagnosed with Lung Fibrosis (long sad story!.....) and I was just informed by my doctor today that after they run some tests they are putting me on prednisone. A LOT of prednisone! Um, here's the deal. I have heard a lot of stories about people just losing their sh!t while on Prednisone. It's a steriod and therefore you experience a "roid...

You can make your own gluten-free ranch dressing. Here's a recipe I cribbed from Epicurious.com: Ranch Dressing 3/4 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 tablespoons powdered cultured buttermilk blend* (Check ingredients to see if your brand is gluten-free. It usually is!) 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons finely chopped...

ARCHIVED How Tall Are You All?
CeliaCruz replied to Kaycee's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm 6'3" and I also didn't diagnose or feel symptoms until I was in my mid-thirties. But I'm from a very very tall family. Mother was six feet and my father was six two. -
I went there this weekend and I just wanted to report two things. Those amazing meatballs that come with the spaghetti on Tuesdays-only are now an everyday appetizer. They are not served with pasta but by themselves with marinara sauce. I ordered them and dunked the breadsticks in the sauce. Pretty amazing. Remember a few months ago that someone...

How much Ensure can you drink in one day? I am finding that a lot of food is totally disagreeing with me and I feel nauseous after every meal. I am trying -- desperately -- to gain weight so this is not a good thing. The only thing I can keep down is Ensure. So I'm drinking a lot of it. Is this wise?

ARCHIVED Fyi... Risotteria Closed For Vacation
CeliaCruz replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
According to their site, they reopen on Tuesday the 29th. Yay! Unfortunately I found out about their "vacation" the hard way. I went there in search of meatballs and they were closed. I practically had a temper tantrum on the street. I wanted those meatballs! -
ARCHIVED Shampoo...
CeliaCruz replied to Cornhusker's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Usually what I see listed in shampoo ingredients is "wheat protein". If I'm not mistaken, that is usually the only glutenous ingredient that exists in most shampoos -- it's used to thicken the shampoo. Otherwise, all the other confusing sounding chemicall-y ingredients like "alkaline" and "sulfate" are okay. -
I haven't eaten there, but I'm assuming you already know that they have a gluten-free/vegetarian menu. I totally understand the impulse not to eat out....but if you do eat out, I'd say Elephant Walk is a good place to cut your teeth.

ARCHIVED Barbecue Sauces
CeliaCruz replied to lindalee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is exactly what I did this weekend. My family got together for a 4th of July BBQ and my sister was going to use some bottled brand of BBQ sauce that had modified food starch in it. I went on Epicurious and found Open Original Shared Link. It took, like, ten minutes to make and everyone in my family loved it. You might want to dilute the hot sauce... -
ARCHIVED Worried About My Weight
CeliaCruz replied to taz sharratt's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Besides being innapropriate, that is just so stupid! Most people feel tremendously insecure when they buy clothes and if you work in retail you are really not supposed to say anything to anyone who is trying on clothes that isn't something along the lines of "you look fabulous" or "let's try a different size" or "a belt would look great with that!" You... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Eats In Cape Cod?
CeliaCruz replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My family has a house on Cape Cod and I visit a lot. The thing is, we don't eat out that much. Hardly ever actually. What we do is buy lots of seafood at the various roadside fish shops, cook it up and eat in. Now that I'm a Celiac, we grill swordfish or tuna on the grill and serve it with lemon. Sometimes we steam lobsters. On memorial day, I pan seared... -
ARCHIVED Going Out For My Birthday, First Time Since Dx
CeliaCruz replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's at 344 Walnut St., on the corner of Washington Park. Newtonville -- across the street from Kentucky Fried Chicken. Open Original Shared Link Small world, indeed. But then, I swear that I run into someone from Newton almost once a week. -
ARCHIVED Going Out For My Birthday, First Time Since Dx
CeliaCruz replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Where near Boston? I grew up in Newton, Mass and two weeks ago I went home to visit my mom. We were going to out to Legal's but my mom felt a bit too tired to go that far so she got on the phone with a restaurant down the street and asked them about Celiac/Gluten-free menu options. As soon as she said "Celiac" they cut her off and said, "oh yeah, we get... -
Good to know! I used to eat at Rothmann's a lot before I was diagnosed. I had no idea that they were celiac friendly but their service has always been top notch so it doesn't surprise me. Their Porterhouse for two is heavenly. I must go back...

There is a restaurant in downtown Brooklyn called Gage and Tolliver. One of the oldest restaurants in NYC. I have always loved it -- very old school, gas lighting, dishes like Oysters Rockefeller etc. Anyway, it turns out that they are celiac friendly. Check it out!

ARCHIVED Gluten-eaters Annonymous
CeliaCruz replied to MallysMama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My local deli has started selling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They literally make them up in the morning and then place them in the glass display case right next to the corn muffins, black and white cookies etc. I have never had THAT much of a problem abstaining from gluten. When I gluten myself it's usually accidental or forgetfullness -- not... -
Does anyone know about Philly rolls? You know, smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber? Those were my favorite things to order from sushi places pre-diagnosis. If I can eat them again, I'll be so psyched!

ARCHIVED Elizabeth Hasselhoff - The View
CeliaCruz replied to Lisa's topic in Publications & Publicity
Right...because absolutely no one in this country has ever gotten divorced ever...except Angelina Jolie. Certainly no one who posts on these boards has ever had a failed marriage or anything. And Bitsy's marriage is forever. I'm sure. She's -- what? -- twenty five? [snort]
