  1. Ah, but Bitsy has never actually come out and announced that she's a Celiac. Read the previous posts.
  2. Compared to Bitsy, she sure is. Not to mention the Academy Award, the fact that she's a Goodwill Ambassador to the UN AND she's having Brad Pitt's baby. Maybe not everyone likes her but I don't think "cool" is such an outrageous claim here.
  3. Ew! Out of all the "celebrities" on this earth, the only one we can claim as one of our own is Bitsy Friggin' Hasselbeck? The woman is a twit, for crying out loud. And frankly, I'm not buying the Celiac Disease. I'm thinking she went on the Atkins diet one day and got confused. (And don't look at me like that, you know you were all thinking it too...
  4. I'm a freelancer and every so often I get these nightmare gigs where the office is completely disorganized and I am basically being thrown to the wolves. Despite the fact that they don't know me from Adam and I know nothing of their methods and expectations, I am put in charge of some insanely complex project where I am given absolutely no direction or encouragement...
  5. I've been noticing lately that ever since I was diagnosed with Celiac, I have all-of-a-sudden become everyone's "go to guy" about anything health related....even stuff that has nothing to do with Celiac disease, autoimmune disorders, allergies, intolerances, gastrointestinal problems etc. For instance, a woman I used to work with called me this weekend...
  6. Does anyone else besides me watch Good Eats with Alton Brown on the Food Network? He did a wonderful show recently about Thai Food and, more specifically, how to make Pad Thai. I haven't tried it yet but I watched the show carefully and it didn't seem as though it necessarily called for anything glutenous. Of course, it's probably different when you actually...
  7. I don't disagree at all. Sometimes you get invited to weddings because you are close friends with the bride and groom -- maybe you even introduced them -- and sometimes you get invited to weddings because you are the groom's father's accountant and it's a big wedding and they need to fill the church. In the first instance, I don't think it's tacky at all...
  8. From the bride's perspective, I'm sure she'd rather just have you there at her wedding. And if the kitchen staff has to be "inconvenienced" then so what? Caterers make big bucks off these things and occasionally they have to handle special needs. It's not like you are literally asking the bride to personally run back into the kitchen and cook you up a...
  9. Did someone just say "stomach flu"? Oh yeah! Not only am I (sorry!) peeing out of my butt every twenty minutes (sorry!), but two friends of mine who are not celiacs are having the same problem. This is excellent advice. I'd also add Kozy Shack brand rice pudding to that list. Not only does it cheer me up, but it's very soothing. And -- obviously...
  10. Suggest a date. I'm wide open this week! (And totally up for "gluten-free Tuesdays" at Risotteria! Anyone? Mookie?) Kame oyster sauce is gluten free and delicious. I use it all the time in my homemade stir-frys and have to buy a new bottle just about every two or three weeks. (Their Hoisin sauce is also safe, also yummy!) But -- I totally...
  11. There are some "french fry" places in New York that specialize in fries but they are touted as "Belgian" and the fries are called "frites". I guess everyone wants to be eating the cuisine of some other place. If you're in Canada, you want New York food. If you're in New York, you want Belgian... And speaking of frites, Pomme Frites on Second Avenue...
  12. I'm definitely interested! Don't get me wrong, I love the whole "pan asian" "California cuisine" "PF Chang" thing. But sometimes I just want to go to a normal chinese takeout place and get some sesame chicken already. I am so excited!
  13. You mean like desks and coffee tables and stuff like that? You don't know how right you are. A "proper" torte, according to a Martha Stewart Living rerun I was watching recently, is made with nut flour. They aren't meant to contain any wheat flour at all. So what's really good about these tortes is that they aren't gluten-free because someone...
  14. I just went there last night. The best! First off, the gluten-free menu is an actual menu with prices on it and everything. It's not one of those dusty laminated sheets that they hand you reluctantly after you've asked for it four times and called ahead etc.! And at first I was going to ask them if this was truly the gluten free menu because there were...
  15. Dunkin Donuts has really good coffee. I go there all the time.
  16. Good question. I was shopping at Ricky's today and perusing a Burt's Bees display. The "hand salve" appealed to me but when I turned the tin over to check out the ingredients, there was a big honking price tag glued to it which I couldn't remove to save my life. I gave up and bought some Kiss My Face hand lotion instead.
  17. File this under "I might be overthinking this..." I think Kathy Griffin, the comedienne, is a Celiac. She is always making diarrhea jokes in her routines and constantly refering to having reactions to stressful situations by "shi++ing [her] pants". In her reality show "My Life on the D List" she at one point confesses that she always gets "the shi+s...
  18. Ask them to put down a fresh piece of aluminum foil on the grill and cook your food on that. Two weeks on the road? Yikes!
  19. I usually telephone ahead of time, ask to speak to a manager and say something like "hey, I'm a celiac -- I can't eat gluten -- and I'm coming to eat at your restaurant tomorrow/tonight/next week. I just wanted to touch base with someone to make sure my needs would be taken care of..." At that point the manager will either say something to indicate that...
  20. This is one of those debates where it's like, "who cares?" Whether I call it a "disease" or a "syndrome" doesn't make any tangible difference in my life. I still can't eat in most restaurants and I can't go grocery shopping without sitting down at my computer and doing a buttload of research. My family and friends still ask me stupid questions and act...
  21. When I was a kid, I was terrified of corned beef and cabbage. Never touched it. The smell conjured up scary old immigrants who peed in jars. But I was visiting my father during St. Patricks Day one year when I was in college and he got this notion to make a New England Boiled Dinner. We went to the supermarket, bought a brisket and followed the directions...
  22. Open Original Shared Link a recipe from Epicurious. As you can see, there are no glutenous ingredients and it's pretty easy, especially -- as pointed out by kabowman -- if you have a crock pot. Enjoy!
  23. If you do use the gift cards, use 'em at another location. I have had wonderful experiences at the Chestnut Hill Legal's. It may be that your local Legal's is the problem and not a reflection of the corporation as a whole. Call around the various franchises and ask about the gluten-free menu. When you get someone on the phone who sounds engaged in what...
  24. Aw thanks! Come to think of it, a real cosmopolitan is fresh lime juice, vodka, cranberry juice and cointreau (or triple sec or Gran Marnier) and all of those things are (or can be) gluten-free. Not everyone makes a proper cosmo, mind you -- sometimes they use prepared mixes -- but if you are dealing with a good attentive bartender, you can have him ...
  25. I'm thinking that the only ingredients -- you know besides HOT NUTS -- are salt and corn syrup. But who knows? I haven't risked it.
