ARCHIVED Cherries Possibly Coated With Something Containing Gluten?
eleep replied to eleep's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Phew -- thanks for humoring me -- I think it is just that cherry-stomach thing. Not enough to get me to quit eating cherries, however. -
ARCHIVED Cherries Possibly Coated With Something Containing Gluten?
eleep posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This may be premature, but I've got a bunch of important deadlines and events coming up in the next few days and really cannot afford to be glutened -- if this is what I fear, I need to down some activated charcoal and delve deep into my glutening emergency kit right away. I picked up a big bag of cherries at Publix and just ate a bunch of them with lunch... -
ARCHIVED Delayed Reaction? How Possible?
eleep replied to oceangirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I find that I react pretty immediately, but the reaction involves a series of bodily events that wipe me out for about four days and then finally disappear about one and a half to two weeks later. The onset of my reaction involves intense anxiety, tension and insomnia -- however, if I'm already under a lot of stress (as has been the case on and off recently... -
I used to take it as a supplement back at a time when I was a bit more of a partyer and doing things that were depleting my body -- it seemed to work wonders for recovery at the time.

I'd actually suggest something like fish oil supplements rather than a topical treatment. -
ARCHIVED Any Celiacs From Gainesville, Florida?
eleep posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There used to be a Gainesville celiac group, but it is apparently defunct. I'm a UF graduate student, so I'm thinking about starting one through UF (if there are a bunch of students) or just in Gainesville itself. Let me know if anyone's interested -- I want to get a sense of how many people there might be before I take this on (otherwise, it's not a... -
ARCHIVED How Long Does Recovery Take?
eleep replied to Super Bellybutton's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ditto on the 2 weeks after being glutened. I thought I started feeling better within a week, but then had a low -- had to get all the personal care products sorted out. Since then, I've been feeling a steady upward climb and I would say that this month is the first month I can say I feel distinctly, irreversibly better. -
ARCHIVED Does Imodium Contain Gluten?
eleep replied to mle-ii's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hey -- caplets don't need "flavor" -- steering clear of "flavor" versions seems to work for a lot of OTC products. -
ARCHIVED I Am Going Crazy!
eleep replied to Chelle15's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You want the Immodium caplets -- I don't know what else is gluten-free. Also, I don't know whether the CVS generic version of Immodium is gluten-free as well, so you probably want the brand name (or at least to confirm). -
ARCHIVED Mainstream Products And Contamination
eleep replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you've got hypoglycemic tendencies, you should consider getting some kind of protein every time you eat -- this will help you with eating the fruit and getting those nutrients --- nuts and nut butters are great for this. -
ARCHIVED I Am Going Crazy!
eleep replied to Chelle15's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your symptoms and feelings do sound very much like Celiac -- I had the crazy mood swings as well -- and the two positive markers are definitely more indication than I got at that stage in the diagnosis (I had to get genetic testing for total confirmation). It helped me a lot to focus on the fact that I would eventually feel better, that my moods were more... -
ARCHIVED Armour Turkey Breakfast Sausages
eleep posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
These were one of the first things I remember checking when I went gluten-free because we had so many in the fridge, but now I'm not sure whether I just looked up Armour on the Delphi list or called the company. I think there is something still kind of making me stressy-sicky feeling on certain days -- I don't think it's gluten, but I'm not sure. Have... -
ARCHIVED New Attitude Problem For Me
eleep replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That makes sense to me. I'm thinking of my ex-boyfriend's partying habits -- which became a huge bone of contention between us last year. I love partying -- in moderation -- I hated that I was the becoming the "heavy" in the relationship who kept insisting that the 4-5 night a week bar and party schedule wasn't a good thing -- it made me come across as... -
My understanding is that washing rice produces a different texture in the final, cooked product. I generally wash rice if I'm making something like sushi or another asian-type dish where the desired outcome is sticky rice. I think I've washed rice before when I made paella, but it's been a while and I can't remember. Now that I think about it, however...

You know, I looked at that site again and some of it seems pulled from an article I did get off of Pubmed a while back -- this may be a bad cut and paste job.

Was she a student? That could explain her bad bedside manner.

Okay -- It finally hit home for me over the last two weeks that I cannot eat almost all dairy right now _at all_, even if I take Lactaid. My Enterolab casein test was negative, and I am still using Lactaid milk in my coffee with no problem -- so I really think this is lactose intolerance. However, I was expecting the lactose reaction symptoms to be...

ARCHIVED New Attitude Problem For Me
eleep replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think that people's movement towards radically different healthier habits probably takes a great deal of emotional and cognitive processing -- something along the lines of addiction recovery, for many. I've been thinking about this quite a bit because my ex -- although he was the one who inspired me to amp up my workouts from yoga and walking to yoga... -
Um, I definitely -- in the early days of going gluten-free and being in shock from my sudden breakup -- was starting to think about things in terms of having a calling. It was a rather startlingly spiritual phase for me -- although I was raised Unitarian Universalist (which means no particular dogmatic belief), I even talked to my minister uncle about this...

I've been thinking about this stuff and I had a little daydream on my way to teaching class today (seems I can't keep my mind on the American Literature I'm supposed to be thinking about). Anyway -- we've got a lot of great writers on this board with a lot of really nuanced insight into the many aspects of dealing with celiac and the way it totally reconfigures...

I recommend looking into some of the relationship-counseling material on fuser/isolator pursuer/distance relationships -- Harville Hendrix has some good books on this.

The volunteer fraternity thing would crack me up. My ex-boyfriend was Sig. Ep. and, in my more bitter-haha moments, I've thought that he dumped me because he was appalled at the idea that someone could live a life without beer!

There could be some kind of riff on the Bake-off or Bakesale theme.

ARCHIVED Jagermeister
eleep replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Erg. That stuff makes me pass out no matter how much else I've had to drink. More power to you. -
If nothing else, I think I'm eventually going to start a celiac.com trekking group now that all the hikers are coming out of the woodwork. Is there something that could be sold? I'm remembering selling gummi bears in high school to pay for my exchange-student trip to Germany. Could we sell baskets filled with Larabars and Immodium?
