  1. HI there, Watch out for Gorilla Munch. There is a high incidence of cross-contamination with their products. It makes me SOooooo sick. I read your post with great interest and empathy. I have been on a gluten-free diet for 13 months now. For the first month I was starving all the time, despite eating more than I felt I had ever eaten before. After...
  2. I ate at PF Chang's for the VERY FIRST TIME this week, after one year on a gluten-free diet. The food was delicious and I didn't get sick. (I get sick from the slightest amount of gluten.) I was thrilled. I will continue to go back for more and more... Kathleen
  3. Hi everyone, It's amazing how insensitive people can be regarding Gluten Intolerance. They usually just don't get it. Frankly, I cannot imagine how they could possibly understand, since this is such a complicated disease. Have you all read the book WHEAT-FREE, WORRY-FREE ? The author has great suggestions for dealing with people in various situations...
  4. I was diagnosed a year ago. Since that time, we have virtually eliminated ALL gluten from our house. My husband is 'on board' with the food issues and generally eats what I eat - mostly meat, fish, poulty, veggies and fruit. We clean the counters before and after eating, especially if he has eaten wheat cereal. This has prevented any issues of contamination...
  5. Hi Stacie, What about an intolerance for Casein? Have you ever checked that? You mentioned that eating too much dairy 'sets you off' so casein is the first thing I thought of. I believe there are tests they can run to check for casein intolerance. best wishes, kathleen
  6. Watch out, though. The possibility of contamination is very likely. I get VERY ill from "gluten-free" Cape Cod chips. However, I am extremely sensitive to gluten, so the chips may not have that effect on everyone. Kathleen
  7. HI there, I had to give up all dairy for many months after starting the gluten-free diet. I would get the worst stomach pains, etc after ingesting any dairy product (even butter!). However, in the past week, I have reintroduced dairy 3 times without any problem. (I have been totally gluten-free since august 2003 and totally dairy-free since Jan. 200...
  8. Hi everyone, As a celiac person with multiple allergies, I have found that the only antibiotic I can take is CIPRO. However, a generic form of this drug apparently hit the market last month. There is some doubt as to whether it is gluten-free. Has anyone had experience with this issue yet? I came down with a horrible infection over the weekend...

    ARCHIVED Westcester Dentist?

I have a great dentist in stamford, CT, if you need one here. (EMail me for his name.) He is now very celiac aware (because of me). I put him in touch with the dentist who is doing the celiac studies for the Celiac Disease Center. He uses a special technique to clean my teeth (like a laser thing) - no pumice, no polish. I used to get very ill...
  10. Hi Stacie, I had (and continue to have) some of the same issues you mentioned. Here's what I have discovered about myself: if I eat ANY grains, I get stomach upset (and I mean ANY). I am particularly sensitive to corn but rice sometimes even sets off a stomach ache and other issues. I have multiple food allergies (diagnosed by scratch test) and...
  11. HI Missy,. Have you had your hormone levels checked? Have them check estradiol levels. Grab a copy of the book (or thumb through it at the bookstore) "IT'S MY OVARIES, STUPID" to see what the 'optimal levels' are for hormones. That has a huge effect on energy levels. Another thought: are all of your medications gluten-free ??? Hope you get some...
  12. DK, Thanks so much for your reply ! Kathleen
  13. Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I spoke with customer service at CVS a couple days ago about their brand of acetaminophen. The representative told me that they use 2 different suppliers for their products, so some batches of the product are gluten-free and others aren't. She could not tell me, however, if my bottle contained gluten, since...
  14. does anyone know if the CVS-brand acetaminophen is gluten-free? I took some today and got intestinal distress shortly thereafter. I have emailed the company, but may not hear back from them for a few days... In the meantime, I will go buy some real tylenol ! thanks, kathleen
  15. Does anyone know if BONNE MAMAN jelly/jam/preserves are gluten-free? There is no contact info for them on the package. Thanks so much. Kathleen
  16. Hi Lisa, Thanks for the info! I would never dream of a hysterectomy but will continue to look into the celiac disease-hormone imbalance link. Luciily, my celiac disease doc is the top guy in the world. I am going to see him again in a month, so will see what he has to say about all this stuff. best wishes, kathleen
  17. Hey Angel, Welcome to the boards. I read your first post with a great sense of 'ditto.' I ws diagnosed at age 34, also. I had a lifetime of illness prior to my diagnosis. That included reflux, duodenal ulcer, weight issues (overweight/unable to lose), acne, itching, cankers, bruising, fungal infections, chronic strep throat and ear infections, anemia...
  18. Hey j9n - The doctor told you the incorrent timing for skipping your period with the Nuvaring. Leave it in for 4 weeks, then replace it with the next one. There is info in the packet you get with your prescription if want to look at it. I started the Nuvaring in April, after having a D&C in March following a 3-month-long period. My ob/gyn...
  19. celiac3270, The celiac disease experts say that things that touch your skin do not affect celiac. My nutritionist told me that things like dish soap don't matter because you rinse the dishes after using the soap. However, it's obvious from reading posts on this site that a lot of people are sensitive to products on the skin, whether or not they...
  20. Products absorbed through the skin will not cause a celiac reaction (though many people have other allergy issues to deal with). Even in people with DH, skin products containing gluten have no effect. The only concern with suncreen is the possibility of getting it near the mouth or on hands that will touch the mouth. The major celiac experts say that...
  21. LIke jhmom, I am affected by even the tiniest speck of gluten. I have separate toaster, but we use the same pots, pans, etc (stainless steel which can be easily scrubbed). However, we cook mostly unprocessed foods in our house now, so gluten becomes less and less of an issue. A lot of celiacs are also affected by dairy, like you mentioned, until the...
  22. Hi everyone, As I approach my 1 year anniversary of being gluten-free, I have another issue to deal with: which sunscreens are gluten-free? I have always had bad reactions to common sunscreens, so would always resort to Neutrogena. However, I can no longer use their makeup, so was wondering about the sunscreen. I will be in the sun A LOT this...
  23. Hi NitaB, I just read your post. I was diagnosed last August and have seen a nutritionist twice (December and March). At my first visit, I realized that I knew virtually as much as her. In fact, she said she didn't know what she could help me with. Of course, she made me eat more grain, since I had been avoiding it. I gained 12 pounds (IN A MONTH...
  24. Terri, Bananas are full of proteins that are similar to the proteins in latex. For people with a latex allergy, eating a banana can be a life-threatening activity. Several other foods also cause the same problems. (see the quote below) My suggestion to you is to consult with your allergist or nutritionist. I cannot eat anything made with the foods...
  25. HI everyone, Just a quick update: I have lost 35 pounds now since last August (over 20 pounds since the end of January!). I have finally made it to size 8/10. My husband is shocked. We have only been married for 2 and half years and he has only known me in my heavier self and my 'ill all the time' self. I haven't been this weight in about 15 years...
