  1. Hi - I did a gluten challenge last spring and failed miserably. I didn't even make it to the biopsy. The strain it put on my body was intense. I passed out twice after eating wheat. I felt extremely tired, moody, and generally ill. I ended up with a severe infection within 3 days and needed a long course of antibiotics. If anyone ever tells me...
  2. Hi everyone, It's been a long time since I have posted here. I am so frustrated right now with this illness. Let me give some backgroud - I have been sick on and off for the past 20 years. I am now 37. This has included constant stomach and intestinal issues, chronic infections (antibiotics 12-15 times a year!), skin rashes, allergies to medicines...
  3. If you are in the Ny metro area, try Josef's gluten-free cookies. They have lots of kinds. I like the double chocolate egg-free, gluten-free cookies. Wow. They come in small clear plastic tubs. I buy them at Whole Foods Market and Mrs Greens Natural Market. Honestly, they are the BEST gluten-free cookies I have ever bought. Kathleen
  4. Hi everyone, I recently attended a conference and received some samples of REVIVAL SOY bars. They state clearly on the label: Does not contain gluten, wheat, yeast or egg. however, I got very sick after consuming the bar (and it was the ONLY thing I had eaten, so it's pretty easy to narrow it down). To top it off, I got the typical mouth sores that...

    ARCHIVED Dentists

Hi everyone, I had my dentist call the dentist who does all the research in collaboration with the Columbia Celiac Disease Center. (At the celiac disease conferences at Columbia, I saw a lot of slides of teeth of celiacs...and the doctor gave full reports about the effects of celiac disease on teeth. I believe you can buy copies of these speeches from...
  6. Hi everyone, I just returned from my trip to ITALY and it was fabulous. A couple of things I learned: AIR FRANCE has the most incredibly delicious gluten-free meals (except for the little tiny loaves of bread which are nearly inedible). Everyone around me was envious of my obviously 'first class meal' in coach! There was a little card at the bottom...
  7. thanks for the replies. I have loaded up on ENER-G granola bars (3 packs of 10!) just in case... I will print out all the restaurants from both sites and will let everyone know the results in a couple weeks! Ciao! Kathleen
  8. Go RED SOX ! I haven't been to a Fenway game since I was diagnosed, but recently attended a game at yankee Stadium and had a great time. I ate hot dogs (without the bun), popcorn, soda, etc. The kosher hot dogs there are gluten-free. It was an easy night, although it was weird eating a hot dog without the bun, wrapped in alum. foil !!! have...
  9. Hi everyone, I am going on a family trip to Italy next week. I am the only one of the five who is on a gluten-free diet. I was planning to just take a couple packs of ENERG granola bars and then live on fresh meat, veggies and fruit. Does anyone have any other thoughts? We will be in Venice for 2 days and then Florence for 5 days. I don't want to be...
  10. Hi everyone, I go through periods of being very angry about the constant issues with going out or going to events involving food. However, I have gotten very adept at eating out, and go to restaurants 5 or more times per week. (A year ago, I wouldn't go out at all.) I always ask the manager when I arrive (or sometimes call in advance), "what is the easiest...
  11. Hi everyone - I would be LOST without my PALM PDA. I have been using it for 16 months. I keep gluten-free medicine and food lists (including a HUGE pdf file of all gluten-free mainstream foods). I also have lists from fast-food restaurants like Wendys and McDonalds that I downloaded from their websites. I created a gluten-free restaurant list in my...
  12. HI Beverly, I am so sorry to hear how sick you are. Have you ever had the genetic test for Celiac Disease? That will give you pretty accurate results even if you're on a gluten-free diet. (95-97% of Celiac patients have the gene, perhaps even higher percentage according to latest studies.) I see one of the top celiac docs in the world, but know now...
  13. HI, Thanks for your reply. Your suggestion is a good one. I will go through my allergy-free cookbook (which has a great rotation diet) and highlight what I CAN eat and then go from there. I just emailed my nutritionist for help. HOpefully, she can give me an appt soon. My allergist said I need to avoid all 50+ foods right now, but I will re-introduce...
  14. Hi guys, thanks for your replies. I am going to try avoiding the eggs and black pepper (though they are basically in EVERYTHING, aren't they?). I am back on wheat and will have another biopsy soon. Since I have been on wheat, I have had 2 infections. In fact, just came home from the walk-in clinic for an extremely sore throat. My immune system is not...
  15. Hi everyone, I was diagnosed with celiac disease in August 2003 by blood test. At that time, I also reacted to 22 foods on the skin scratch tests. My reaction to the gluten-free diet was amazing - nearly everything medical problem I had cleared up. Then I started reacting to lots of things and developed stomach problems again (off and on). The PALEO...
  16. HI Judy, Thanks for your reply. The problem is that there are other serious neurological diseases that can apparently cause gluten intolerance, so my doc is trying to rule out whether the gluten intolerance is causing the neuro symptoms or whether the symptoms are really a result of some neuro disease that's been missed. An update on my reaction ...
  17. Hi Deb, Well, the reaction was on Thursday night. The 'fog' was basically all day Friday. I feel fine today. In fact, my stomach feels calmer than normal. This is really weird for me. I am craving all sorts of foods now, though. The other thing I forgot to mention is that after the pizza, I started to break out in slotchy patches on my face. ...
  18. Hi everyone, I tried normal wheat pizza two nights ago after 19 months on the gluten-free diet. It was delicious, but 45 minutes later, I was PASSED OUT "COLD"- snoring. The next morning I felt like I has been hit by a truck and was in a complete fog most of the day. I felt like I had a hangover, in fact, but without the stomach upset. My stomach was...
  19. Hi there, I see both Anne Lee and Dr Green at Columbia Presbyterian. They are both amazing to work with. I found both to be totally approachable about anything. In fact, when I have called DR Green with pressing issues, he has personally called me back. He will spend A LOT of time with you at your first visit and at follow-ups as needed. I saw Anne...
  20. The scope is done by "upper endoscopy." Check out the WEbMD info about that procedure. I had one done yesterday. IT was quick and painless, but I was groggy the rest of the day due to the sedative. good luck!
  21. Have you had an endoscopy and biopsy? That's where you're gonna see if you really have symptoms....
  22. Hi Nadtorius, I also follow a modified paleo diet. I, like you, find that I often react to gluten-free goodies. Certain manufacturers seem to provoke more of a response than others, so my thought is that it has something to do with their ingredient suppliers or the cleanliness of their factory (cross-contamination). I do best when I eat NO grains...
  23. Wow - I cannot imagine what you eat on all those "free" diets!!!! Just kidding...you probably have the healthiest diet imaginable. My only problem with losing all this weight is that is costing me a fortune in clothing. I have spent over $5000 in the past year already. It's totally worth it, though! kat
  24. MAC cosmetics are all gluten-free. They are available at MAC stores in malls throughout the USA and Canada. If you are a perfomer, make-up artist, etc, you get a 30% discount on products there. Wet n Wild are gluten-free, also (and much cheaper than MAC). They are easy to find in any drugstore. best wishes, kat
  25. Hi everyone, I just wanted to touch-base and share my weight loss success. I have lost about 42 pounds now (since August 1 of last year). I am doing so well on this gluten-free diet. My other medical issues have disappeared (like my horrendous allergies). My breast lump biopsy was benign, too. whew. I have gone from a size 14 to an 8 in the year....
