  1. Hi Jess, First of all, you need to get proper testing for celiac and any other food allergies. Do not stop eating wheat if you want your celiac blood tests to be accurate. There is a genetic test available for celiac, as well, that is positive for about 95% of celiacs. Contact the Celiac DIsease Center or look at their website to see what tests your...
  2. Hi Everyone, I feel better today, but a little groggy. I am going to get out into the sunshine for a nice walk, since it's in the 80s today (finally!). Someone asked about activated charcoal....it helps to absorb the 'mistake' and stops all of the grumblings, etc. My celiac nutritionist and my naturopath both recommended it, and it really does work...
  3. Hey everyone, well 3.5 years and I haven't had too many 'mistakes'...but oh! I had one today. I took some charcoal tablets the instant I started having symptoms (about 3 hours after lunch) and made it through a concert I was singing. However, I am totally wiped out and feel the need to sleep immediately. I remember this happening when my doctor had me...
  4. Didn't know it was closed...I go there a lot. I was there on Wed. night, and they have done some redecorating in the past month, so maybe you hit it during that time. It looks great! K.
  5. I have eaten fries at at BK in Connecticut many times, and never had an issue. (Never found an onion ring, either). I have spoken with the managers there and they told me they use dedicated fryers. The onion rings are placed in a different area than the fries, too. I don't think I would trust any other BK, though! And certainly, never ever ever McDs fries...
  6. Okay, I have been to Risotteria in NY City about 100 times in the past few years, but NOW they have deep-dish sicilian style pizza...and it's AWESOME! I hope you can all get there to enjoy it. Oh, and those bread sticks just get better every time I am there! Kat
  7. Hey guys ! There's a really fabulous book called THE PALEO DIET FOR ATHLETES that might have a lot of ideas for those times of heavy training. I am thinking about doing a triathlon...something that was on my mind long ago before I got really sick. Now that I have been gluten-free for 3.5 years, it's time to get back into it. Right now, i am doing...
  8. Hi there and welcome to the boards. I am glad you are using this great resource. Here are some more ideas for snacks/lunches. I use the PALEO DIET book and BREAKING THE VICIOUS CYCLE and GLUTEN - FREE GOURMET for ideas for meals, snacks etc. I am on the road A LOT (4000 miles a month), so I always carry food with me. I eat mostly paleo, though,...
  9. HI everyone, The generic form of fluconazole from Glenmark Pharma is indeed gluten-free. I ended up just researching the exceipient list using the lists from glutenfreedrugs.com and cross-referencing it with the ingredients that the pharmacist had on her insert. Unfortunately, we couldn't reach the company on Friday when I picked up the prescription...
  10. Hi, I got a prescrip today for diflucan, and it was filled with the generic form, fluconazole 150mg, made my Glenmark Pharma. I contacted glenmark about the gluten status, and cannot reach anyone there. Their website shows no information, either. Does anyone out there know if this is safe for me to take? Thanks so much, Kat
  11. Hey Mallory, I live right near you! I see that you're newly diagnosed. If you need any assistance in any way, feel free to contact me! Kathleen gluten intolerant (diagnosed via blood tests in 2003) but NOT celiac (don't carry the gene) other food allergies
  12. Hi everyone, Just a moment of 'weird' in my gluten-free life. I just bought a new house (3-story townhouse condo, new construction) in October and finally got around to painting the 2nd floor this week. I chose a bunch of colors without looking at their 'names' on the paint sample cards, and guess what color I picked for my kitchen? Churchill Hotel...
  13. Just want to add my 2 cents... I am a non-celiac gluten intolerant person, officially. I had Dr Green do the genetic test, and it was negative, but he said that does not mean I don't have celiac, since 5% of celiacs don't test positive for the gene. It does make it UNLIKELY that I have celiac, but not impossible. He believed, though, that I was truly...
  14. Hi jennifer, I was in the same place as you a little over a year ago. When I was first diagnosed as 'celiac', I had some of the really old types of blood tests (that most MDs don't consider valid anymore). I was high on one of them, showing borderline celiac. Based on that, i went on a gluten-free diet. I got horribly sick every time I ingested gluten...
  15. I have just returned from my trip to Ireland. (10 days) It is the most beautiful place on earth! Simply enchanting! I wanted to share a couple of experiences that others may find helpful: Aer Lingus has delicious gluten-free meals, but watch out for the bread. The cabin crew put a regular wheat bread roll on my tray before they brought it to me. I...
  16. Hi everyone, Thanks for your replies. I am in the state of Connecticut. I was diagnosed first with Celiac by some ancient blood tests (IgA or something like that). I consulted one of the top celiac doctors and he said those tests meant nothing. However, I did really well on the gluten-free diet. Nearly all of my health problems went away (and they...
  17. Hi everyone, I would like to know what all of you do about health insurance. I am self-employed, and currently finishing out my COBRA benefits from a previous employer. I applied last month for an independent policy through Blue Cross, who ironically, is my current health provider. I just got a rejection letter today, and the reason stated was 'gluten...
  18. I used a nutritionist who sepcializes in the gluten-free diet. It didn't work for me, since she asked me to add all sorts of gluten-free grains into my diet. (I cannot tolerate corn, amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa, etc). I got sicker and sicker and gained a lot of weight and had a lot of medical side-effects. I really don't know what it is about nutritionists...
  19. Hi everyone, Have any of you tried the SCD diet (Specific Carbohydrate Diet)? I am planning to try it, since after 2.5 years on the gluten-free diet, I continue to have some symptoms unless I eat very 'paleo', which is very restrictive. I even get symptims when I am ABSOLUTELY positive that I have not been 'glutened'. My last biopsy was okay, so...
  20. HI guys, He says he never intentionally put wheat in the food, but says there have been 'mistakes' made since there are kids around. What the heck does that mean? His kids seem to understand my celiac better than he does. He seems to feel I have never gotten sick at those times, but honestly, my health has been steadily deteriorating since we met a...
  21. HI there, Thanks for your replies. See, here's the thing. It's NOT a huge change for me. I have been on the gluten-free diet now for 2 and a half years. The only time I went off was for that stupid gluten challenge last spring, in part prompted by this significant other who thought that I might actually be able to do it. (failed miserably) His comments...
  22. Thanks for all the support. I am so angry this morning, though. My significant other and I had a huge fight again today, and once again, it goes back to my 'food issues'. He even insists that I don't get sick when I eat wheat. I said, what are you talking about? He said there have been mistakes. I aksed for specifics and he refused to give any. Honestly...
  23. HI everyone, Thanks again for being here. I just want to say how much better I feel after 2 weeks virtually grain-free and dairy-free. I have discovered a couple of things: I get really sick if I ingest corn. I also had a reaction the one time I ate dairy. However, my naturopath pointed out that it could be the SUGAR, or the dairy FAT, or the dairy...
  24. Thanks for sharing that link. what a great article! As far as how long it takes to feel better - I felt a lot better within a week of eating gluten-free, but months passed as some symptoms subsided and new ones appeared. A (stupid) gluten challenge 2 years later set back all my progress, and even the gluten-free diet didn't make me feel better...
  25. HI Karen and everyone, Thanks for the support. Actually, it is my DOCTOR and others around me who say 'you don't have celiac', and my doc is one of the top in the world. I started crying the last time I was in his office, and he looked at me totally stone-cold and asked if I was depressed. I told him I am just sick of being sick and I want an answer...
