  1. Good luck and speedy recovery!
  2. I thought I had no intestinal symptoms--until I went gluten-free. Only then did I realize that I had had LOTS of intestinal symptoms that I had been ignoring!
  3. I second this! At this point, you already know from the extremely high blood test results that he HAS celiac. The biopsy will not re-diagnose him--you already have the diagnosis. The biopsy will likely confirm the diagnosis by showing villi damage. It will also put a lot of $$ in the GI's pocket, and IS a somewhat risky procedure for your husband...
  4. TOTALLY true. I'd vote for Enterolab, even though I've never gone that route myself.
  5. That's why I bolded the part about watery stools (the opposite of constipation)! That line makes it sound like you can have both constipation and watery stools, or either. There's a wonderful website called www.lunchinabox.net. The blogger is no longer gluten-free, as her husband (who was the celiac, at least, that's what they thought) turned out...
  6. I was thinking that the vomiting might be reflux? That is also a common presentation amongst celiacs, but for the life of me, I don't know what the mechanism is. If anyone knows why celiac causes reflux, please post! I just remember thinking that it was the acidic tomato sauce that was giving me horrible reflux, when all along it was the nice bland...
  7. His diet does look carb-heavy, as well as fiber-light. (I don't count gluten-free cookies, chips, and pretzels as fiber). Can you give him brown rice? And I didn't see any veggies at all on your list, but maybe you forgot to list them? Steamed broccoli, raw carrot sticks, raw red peppers (sweet, not spicy), and you can have him dunk them in hummous (a dip...
  8. I agree with Nora about the lactose issue. However, I disagree about the time issue. Five days for a 4-year-old is vastly different from 5 days for an adult who has decades of damage. I do not recall seeing any posts from parents who say that their children didn't respond to the gluten-free diet for several months. On the contrary, all the posts I...
  9. Hi, Holly, welcome aboard! Most of us here had quite a bit of trouble getting the hang of the gluten-free diet. Gluten is "hidden" in more products than I ever imagined, such as: Corn Flakes Rice Krispies (and most other breakfast cereals) most brands of soy sauce "lite" ice creams (as well as cookie dough flavors) deli-made tuna salads (contain...
  10. Thanks again, Snow Angel. I hadn't gone back to the site, so I had no idea she'd closed it. I can see why she came to that decision, though.
  11. Have you already checked out www.lunchinabox.net? It's a bento packed lunch blog by a mom of a 3-year-old. The blogger who writes it is no longer gluten-free (her hubby was misdiagnosed with celiac when he actually had a rare intestinal bacterial infection, but they caught it when he didn't respond to the gluten-free diet), but most of her packed lunch...
  12. Fascinating, Liz--I was on Phenergan for my second 2 pregnancies because complications from the hyperemesis almost caused me to lose my first child. However, I begged the doctor to let me take as little as possible, and ended up taking about 1/4 of a pill once a day. Any more than that, and I was unconscious and couldn't function! In retrospect, I am...
  13. Have you been tested for Lyme Disease? You might want to pm rachel_24 or CarlaB on this board--Rachel is our resident expert on multiple issues. She was dealing with gluten intolerance, candida, mercury toxicity (yes, from amalgams!), and THEN she was diagnosed with Lyme DIsease. Interestingly, there is a LARGE number (hence, 2 separate threads) of member...
  14. Dina, I would guess that the reason that you are having trouble with carbs right now is that your intestines might not have healed? Most of us here found that eating gluten-free bread/cake/cookie/pancake substitutes in the beginning was very hard on gluten-damaged intestines. Once the damage has healed, it is much easier to digest the carbs--but most of...
  15. I just happened to see this in the Hispanic section of Giant Eagle grocery store! It says gluten-free in big letters on the front--but it's a mainstream product, not specialty, so it's reasonably priced (there's a new concept for us!). It's a manioc starch (tapioca)-based mix, and it makes about 20-22 little puffy rolls that are delicious! And they...
  16. Sorry if I missed the answer to this: did he have ANY positive blood test results for antibodies to gluten? (Did they DO a celiac panel?) And did he improve on the gluten-free diet? I would think that the only situation where you need to question the diagnosis is if he has unresolved symptoms As you read, there ARE other causes besides celiac for a positive...
  17. I just wanted to add that many people on this board have posted about their children's behavior, describing behavior that sounds just like the description above (but with no diagnosis or label attached to it), and they have reported that the problems miraculously disappeared on the gluten-free diet. This is anecdotal evidence, not "scientific research...
  18. Oppositional Defiance Disorder seems to be an official diagnosis of a neuro/mental condition that results in an abnormal state of constant defiance and hostility. I do think that doctors, especially psychiatrists, are awfully quick to paste labels that result in medication--and psych medications rarely address the cause of the symptoms; instead they...
  19. Hi, Dreamin Darlin and Mom of boys, I just started a new thread (Open Original Shared Link) relating to what you've both written on this one. I think you might be on to something! Hope we all find answers!
  20. I've noticed a couple of posts on this issue, and thought I'd throw the question out there in case any of you have come up with research, or links, or if you just have your own observations to share! Thanks!
  21. I've never liked Hershey's, either--I always thought it had a sour-milk aftertaste. I know first-hand how easy it is to dupe someone into thinking it's real chocolate, though--I used to make hot Ovaltine malt-flavored milk (pre-gluten-free days) for my kids and tell them that it was hot chocolate, and I've made carob-flavored brownies for them, and they...
  22. Looks pretty darn clear to me. You don't make anti-gliadin antibodies unless you have a problem with gliadin (the portion of gluten that causes problems). If DS's immune system is making antibodies to gliadin, that means you shouldn't give it to him, unless you want his immune system to attack his body--which is what is already happening with his eczema...
  23. It depends on how anxious you are to have an official piece of paper saying you have celiac disease. If you have other autoimmune issues, such as thyroid, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, MS, etc., or if you have GERD (is commonly caused by gluten intolerance), you might want to just try a gluten-free diet and see if your symptoms improve...
  24. My goodness, nitu, that looks way better than what most toddlers eat! Is the pasta gluten pasta or gluten-free pasta? If she IS gluten-intolerant, then the pasta would be enough to cause symptoms if it's gluten pasta. I like to see a bit more protein in a child's diet, but don't know if anyone would agree with me on that. I'm just going by instinct...
