  1. gfpaperdoll is probably right, but I would try one thing first. I would send her the Peter Green book, Annalise Roberts' Gluten-Free Baking Classics, and maybe a couple of others, along with a letter worded something like this: Dear MIL, I NEED YOUR HELP! Just as we feared, I have been diagnosed with celiac, and it is quite likely that our children...
  2. I am not particularly sensitive, but I make my own dressing, too--because it tastes SO much better! To quote Rachael Ray: "Why put bottled dressing with all its chemicals and additives on fresh greens?" I don't even get the "pre-washed" lettuce in a bag anymore--it just doesn't taste good. I spend an extra 5 minutes washing it, spinning it dry, and...
  3. For many of us who have no major issues other than gluten, it doesn't seem to matter whether the diagnosis is celiac disease or gluten intolerance, as both the symptoms and the cure are identical. Indeed, for many (if not most or even all), gluten intolerance seems to eventually cause celiac disease (as defined by villi damage) if gluten consumption continues...
  4. I hope things improve for you very soon!!! Hang in there! If there is any comfort food that would really make you feel better, post what it is you miss, and one of us (or a dozen of us!!) will immediately post gluten-free recipes for it! It does get better. Really. Much better!
  5. Hey, Walter, I'm so glad you checked back in here, I've been wondering how you were doing! I'm sorry things have been so rough. Everyone has posted great advice already. Like Elye, my only bout with depression was post-partum (maybe you're suffering from gluten post-partum?), and the only thing that helped me out of that was major exercise outdoors ...
  6. There have been a few past threads about this. My understanding is that they did not change their formula but that they are legally allowed to call their product "gluten-free" if it is under 200 ppm. Many here react strongly even to that small an amount of gluten. I don't--but I realize that if others react strongly to it, then it could possibly cause...
  7. Blueberries can also turn poo black.
  8. For gluten-free flours, I go to Lotus (Asian grocery) in the Strip. Super-fine white rice flour (the only kind they have!), tapioca starch, potato starch are each 69 cents for a 1-pound bag. They have cornstarch here in 1/2-pound bags, too--stays fresher than in the cardboard boxes in Giant Eagle.
  9. Oh, yes, indeedy! Think of it this way: you have something like 22 feet of intestine. If you are lucky, they biopsy 6 samples, each about 1/4 inch. That's a total of an inch and a half out of 22 feet, so they've actually tested 1.5 inches out of a possible 264 inches (12 inches in a foot, 22 feet of intestine). 1.5 out of 264 is .005 %. With me...
  10. It took a good 4-6 weeks to disappear completely, but I went gluten-free concurrently with a 10-day course ofZyrtec (which was very effective against the itch, as I never take antihistamines) and prednisone, which, presumably shut off my immune system, and it did start to get noticeably better within 48 hours.
  11. Don't know if it helps you any, but my DH-type rash (I didn't have an official diagnosis, either) did NOT look like bug bites. It started by looking like a series of tiny pin pricks, and then morphed into something that looked like really, really, really severe poison ivy, but it was weirdly symmetrical: if a patch developed on my right upper arm, an identical...
  12. At least I can tell you who NOT to go to! Avoid Joseph Bikowski at all costs!!!!! (Am I allowed to say that here????) Could you have fleas? Do you have a dog or an outside cat? Or did you recently move into a house that was previously owned by a dog or outside cat? Or have you spent a lot of time outside (they can hitch-hike in on your shoes or...
  13. I don't know if my experience was typical, but I was left with 2 red scars each about the size of a pea. It's been a year and a half, and they are still obvious enough so that when I wear a T-shirt, people say, "Ewww, what happened to your arm?" My dermatologist also didn't bother to tell me that the prednisone I was on would screw up the biopsy and...
  14. What beautiful babies! And welcome back! I don't know if you are able to get outside at all during the day, but it is a very good way to help get over jet lag. Exposure to daylight helps you reset your biological clock, somehow--the more, the better. Of course, you probably have the same dreary, rainy weather we've got, but even going for a sloshy walk...
  15. I have found bread crumbs in the ingredients lists of many deli-made tuna salads and chicken salads. As suggested above, you need to call Arby's and ask.
  16. Oh, dear--I use the glazed flash frozen chicken breasts from Costco. It never occurred to me that they might not be safe, as neither wheat nor obviously gluteny ingredients are listed, and I don't have obvious reactions to small amounts of gluten.
  17. Oh, my!!!! I'm sorry you had such a frustrating time, but oh, the way you wrote about it is SO funny!!!! Where on earth do you find gluten-free pretzels for 2 bucks? They are $7.99 here ON SALE.
  18. I agree with everyone else--time to start looking for a new job. Int the meantime, though, it's very important to remember--the people you are working with are the ones who will be contacted by any employers who interview you! So you need to be sweet as can be for now, Yes, that means you have to put up with the crap--but it's temporary, it's only...
  19. Shan, how are things going?
  20. That could happen anywhere. It only takes one person to screw things up, no matter how many precautions are in place. It's good that you complained to the manager. I hope that they figured out how it happened so that this won't happen again, at least at that particular restaurant.
  21. This is for those who do not live near a P.F. Chang's and are drooling: P. F. Chang's China Bistro Singapore Street Noodles Singapore Sauce 2 tablespoons white vinegar 1/4 cup curry powder 1 pinch turmeric (optional) 1/4 cup lite soy 1 cup vegetarian oyster sauce 1/4 cup Sriricha chili sauce 1/4 cup ketchup 2 gallons water 1 pound rice stick...
  22. I used to live in Seattle--does that count? It's the best city in the country!!!!!! (It's been 20 years since I moved, and I still miss it!)
  23. How awful for you! Do you feel comfortable posting what city/country you are in? Maybe there is a celiac group where you are that can set up some kind of support system for you--bring gluten-free meals to whoever is caring for your daughter (and to you, if you need them), provide helpful info, recommend celiac-savvy doctors, etc. Does he have very...
  24. Wow, thank you so much for all the valuable information!!!! Question about the Wagamama--wouldn't the soy sauce make practically everything gluteny?
