ARCHIVED Celiac-when Family Members Refuse To Get It
Fiddle-Faddle replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do you have a doctor who is actually on top of the gluten thing? Maybe he or she could write a letter to your mother? Or maybe you and your mom could speak with his nurse, who could state to your mother that you are not allowed gluten every again, and that even a small amount could harm not only you but your baby as well? There's GOTTA be something or... -
ARCHIVED Celiac-when Family Members Refuse To Get It
Fiddle-Faddle replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If Lori has already been diagnosed with DH, there is absolutely no need for further testing. DH in itself is a definitive diagnosis of celiac, and any additional gluten consumption would be tantamount to poisoning her! Lori, I hope you are already feeling better gluten-free, and glad to hear your mom is coming around! I must say, I am taken aback... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed With Dh Without Biopsy
Fiddle-Faddle replied to LoriC's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Sounds like your dermatologist is the only doctor you have seen who has any sense at all. Most of us on this board are of the opinion that IBS doesn't actually exist as a disease. The S stands for "Syndrome," which means a collection of symptoms. Those symptoms are IDENTICAL to the symptoms of celiac. Unfortunately, most doctors seem to be idiots, and... -
ARCHIVED An Update On Me.....
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Glad to see you! I've been thinking of you... Sounds like you are on the right track, and Ursa is an excellent source of knowledge and advice. I also thought that salt cravings had something to do with low thyroid? Then again, low thyroid could be caused by Addison's. couldn't it? I hope you feel better VERY soon (like, NOW), and please keep us... -
ARCHIVED Doc's Advice?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to mama2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would contact the La Leche League and see what they say--they know WAY more than the docs about anything to do with nursing, including what gets into breast milk and what doesn't. The website is www.lli.org, I think. If that doesn't work, google "La Leche League." Good luck, and bravo to you for nursing! I could never understand why anyone would... -
ARCHIVED Flu Shot?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to silly celiac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There does seem to be quite a bit of controversy over whether vaccines ought to be recommended for people with autoimmune disorders, especially vaccines for diseases that are usually not dangerous. I don't think it's an easy call, at least for really devastating illnesses like polio. There are valid arguments on both sides. But flu--??? I know it can... -
ARCHIVED Flu Shot?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to silly celiac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Be aware that most flu shots contain MERCURY--a known neurotoxin that has been banned in all over-the-counter products for years, but is still present in some vaccines. There does seem to be a link with celiac and mercury toxicity. You can request a mercury-free shot--it will come in an individual-dose ampule without preservatives, and it will be more... -
ARCHIVED Refractory Sprue?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to michiamojersey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm so sorry you have been going through such h3ll. You might try PM-ing Canadian Karen here--I think she might have refractory sprue and also Ursa Major, who has several other major food intolerances--they are both extremely knowledgeable and far better educated than most MD's on this kind of thing. Other possibilities might include Lyme disease and... -
ARCHIVED Curious If It Is Common!
Fiddle-Faddle replied to adiftime's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, that makes sense, as celiac disease seems to be a major cause of RA. -
ARCHIVED Curious If It Is Common!
Fiddle-Faddle replied to adiftime's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow. I've known that I have a short pinky (violinists tend to notice these kinds of things), but never had a clue it might be related to, well, anything!!! -
Ugh--hope it all works out! Sorry you were subjected to that appalling level of incompetence.

ARCHIVED To Start School Or Not To Start School
Fiddle-Faddle replied to JennyC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We did not hold our son (July birthday) back. We sent him to a private, all-day kindergarten, thinking that he could repeat kindergarten in the public school if we thought he wasn't ready, but he was very ready--academically. He definitely had major social issues (Asperger's syndrome), but he was also already the tallest kid in the class. We figured... -
ARCHIVED The History Of Wheat
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Fascinating--thanks for posting! My husband's response is, wouldn't genetically engineering wheat without the 33-MER sequence solve the problem? (He's a chemist...) -
ARCHIVED The Truth About The Ingredients In Pet Food
Fiddle-Faddle replied to John B. Symes, D.V.M.'s topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks! I just bought a bag of the Wellness CORE food at one of the big super-pet stores--I'll let you know how it goes. My dad is type 2 (he's in his 80's and was only just diagnosed). He has been so successful at controlling his blood sugar by diet alone (even with eating cheese) that I hesitate to suggest that he eliminate anything else from his... -
ARCHIVED Brown Rice Flour
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Darn210's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I haven't seen any at the Asian market. Authentic Foods makes a wonderful brown rice flour, but I can't afford it, so I use half Bob's Red Mill brown rice flour (a bit gritty) and half white rice flour from the Asian market. -
ARCHIVED Alton Brown's gluten-free Cookies
Fiddle-Faddle replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Check this link for chocolate chip cookies (nearly as good as TOllhouse!)and other goodies: Open Original Shared Link click on "gluten-free cooking" and then on "gluten-free cooking archives." The gluten-free flour mix she uses is 6 parts FINELY GROUND brown rice flour (eliminates the grittiness, but very $$--I use half Bob's red mill brown rice... -
ARCHIVED The Truth About The Ingredients In Pet Food
Fiddle-Faddle replied to John B. Symes, D.V.M.'s topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oh, no--my dad has gone practically carb-free (except for fruits, and vegies) in an effort (so far, extremely successful) to deal with his diabetes without insulin--but he adores cheese, and does have some every day. Should I tell him not to eat cheese? And if so, do you have some links and/or studies I can throw at him? He is finally starting to listen... -
ARCHIVED Alton Brown's gluten-free Cookies
Fiddle-Faddle replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I didn't bother--it looks VERY similar to Annalise Roberts' chocolate chip cookie recipe. Not exactly the same, but VERY similar! -
ARCHIVED The Truth About The Ingredients In Pet Food

Hi, Dogtor J, I blundered (happily!) on to your site when I was first becoming aware of my own gluten problems a year and a half ago. I hope the manufacturers eventually get your message! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I switched my cats to a grain-free food (Innova EVO), which was WONDERFUL for my diabetic kitty (gee, wonder what triggered the diabetes... -

ARCHIVED Campbells Mailed Me The gluten-free List
Fiddle-Faddle replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Very interesting, Ali, thank you for posting it. I am now confused--I'd been getting the Cambell's select southwestern corn chowder. the select butternut squash soup, and the select tomato parm bisque, because I saw NO gluten ingredients listed. DOes this mean they have gluten after all??? I don't have major reactions, so I wouldn't know if I were... -
ARCHIVED Hospital Useless! Any Ideas?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to shan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, you can nurse again! It might not even be all that difficult. Contact the La Leche League (www.lli.org, or there is probably a 1-800 phone number, too)--they will hook you up with a lactation consultant, possibly free of charge, and give you good advice about relactating. The doctors are usually totally clueless here, by the way. Why do you... -

ARCHIVED Garlic Naan
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Cam's Mom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thank you so much for posting this! I don't have access to chebe mix. How many cups are in a package? I was thinking I might be able to do this with one of my gluten-free flour mixes, but don't know how much mix to use. -
ARCHIVED How Gluten Free Do I Need To Be?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to jeggen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sarah, there was a LOT of discussion of these low-gluten wafers right after I joined last year, and, the big problem is, the doctors and scientists who say that the low-gluten wafers should be safe are not aware that the supposedly "insignificant" amount of gluten in the low-gluten wafers is STILL enough to not only cause a sensitive celiac to react, but...
