ARCHIVED Son Scheduled For Scope At Georgetown
Fiddle-Faddle replied to arlingtonmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm going to go out on a limb here. If it were my child, and the bloodwork positive (which I assume is why they want to scope in the first place), I would not do the scope at all. There are 22 feet of intestine on an adult (obviously less on a child), and, as noted above, damage is patchy. The chances of their picking a patch with damaged villi is... -
ARCHIVED Where Do I Go From Here?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to sjust's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Lots of great advice from Electra, above! I'd say you are looking at 2 possible issues, or perhaps both at once. 1) Possible malabsorption: this is where diet (baby's AND yours) comes into play. You may need to eliminate many kinds of foods before you find what works. What are you and baby eating? I think it might be wise to eliminate everything... -

Yes, PLEASE!!! I'm not sure what this Drop-Down Box is. Rachel, good to see you back! Jin, how are things with your dad? (And with you?) Miamia, have you done these ionic foot baths before? Has anyone here done them? What were the results based on how you felt afterwards? My husband thinks it's just a way to get money from us, but he has been... -
I'm also wondering if you were tested for other things. Did they run a thyroid panel? And to what stress is your dermatologist referring? Going gluten-free certainly doesn't stress the body...if anything, it's the opposite! How is your health otherwise? You didn't by any chance recently wean a baby from nursing, did you? My hair literally...

ARCHIVED Creme Brulee French Toast
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Not yet, but if I get organized, I'll try it this week. The comments on allrecipes.com are all raves! And the chef who used my gluten-free bread to make Creme Brulee French Toast in the hotel didn't tell me his recipe, so I don't know if it was exactly the same as this, but, boy, it was good!!! It was ready in 10 minutes, so I suspect it wasn't baked... -
ARCHIVED Creme Brulee French Toast
Fiddle-Faddle posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I got the idea for this from the hotel restaurant, and the recipe is straight off of allrecipes.com. Apologies if everyone has already seen this--there are a ton of recipes for this on the Internet. All we need to do is use gluten-free bread (and how many of us have dried-out gluten-free bread in our freezers???)! Those who are also unable to have dairy... -
Now, this probably wouldn't work on a weekend at a crowded hotel, but I happened to be there on a Monday morning, and it was pretty empty. The menu listed "Creme Brulee Fench Toast," which sounded SO good, I was almost tempted to cheat, but luckily I remembered my bag of gluten-free bread in my hotel room, so I went back and got it, brought it to the...

I had the most wonderful experience at the Uno's in Garrett County, Maryland (which is NOT a particularly gluten-free friendly area)! I told the manager that I was allergic to wheat (easier to get the idea across that way) and asked thim if it would be possible for me to order a single-serve Chicago-Style pizza without the crust, using sliced eggplant...

ARCHIVED Alton Brown
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Hollylou42's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thank you so much for posting this! I LOVE Good Eats! Very interesting that he uses egg AND egg YOLK! I bet he has some kind of sophisticated explanation about fat globules and protein, or something like that! I think I'll try that combination in my next cookie recipe! -
Don't know--but I also had pleurisy a couple of years ago.

ARCHIVED Question About Vaccinations
Fiddle-Faddle replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Where do you get the "vast majority" of kids? I do not intend to be argumentative here. It's just that all three of my kids reacted--but only one reaction got reported. The pediatrician at the time didn't know about the other two because the nurse who spoke to me on the phone didn't consider their reactions to be reactions. The pediatrician said later... -
ARCHIVED Question About Vaccinations
Fiddle-Faddle replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There are two MAJOR changes since we were kids. One is the use of "multiple" vaccines, where there are 3 or more vaccines together in one shot. There has been NO long-term research on the safety of this. The other, as mentioned above, is the sheer number of vaccines given. In the late 90's, the recommended vaccine schedule included 26 vaccines by... -
ARCHIVED Omg...i Might Be On To Something
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Well, imagine that! They don't know what to do with the front either, or the brain, or the bowels, or... Would it be worth seeing a physiatrist? That's a sports medicine doctor, kind of like a physical therapist with an MD, or like an orthopedist that doesn't do surgery. They specialize in managing pain without surgery, and are very into physical... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I pmed Rachel, hoping I could help to calm things down, but I failed. She pmed me back a long, angry letter, saying that she was done with this thread for good. Not only was I unable to dissuade her, I think I made her angrier. I'm very taken aback by the whole thing, because it did NOT seem like our Rachel. No full moon...maybe Jupiter... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Great news! Would swimming help your back? Knowing you (funny concept, as we've never met face to face), whatever you try, you will overdo it at first from the sheer joy of being able to do it, so BE CAREFUL!!! Give yourself limits, and observe them strictly. It's better to go slowly and actually get there than to do too much and end up going... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
***NEWS FLASH*** My husband took the bug (who is STILL alive and kicking) to the entomologist, who thought it might be a tick til he got it under the microscope. IT'S A BLACK COCCINEAL BEETLE. IT'S NOT A TICK!!!!!!!! I looked up 5 different links about coccineal beetles, and they all said that they don't bite. WRONG. -
ARCHIVED Depressed- Need To Vent
Fiddle-Faddle replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My understanding is that salmon is not high in mercury, especially wild salmon. Costco sells canned wild salmon--makes great salad, just like tuna. You can also buy frozen tilapia very inexpensively, poach it in wine, and make salad out of that. True, you can't eat raw fish sushi now, but you can have all the vegie sushi your little heart and growing... -
ARCHIVED Authentic Foods Superfine Brown Rice Four
Fiddle-Faddle replied to NewGFMom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use half BRM, half superfine white rice flour from the Asian grocery. BRM is quite a bit grittier than the Authentic Foods superfine, but when I use it half and half, it's barely noticeable. I was thinking of purchasing a large coffee grinder and just grinding my own brown rice, but I'm not nearly organized enough to do that yet. I can barely keep... -

Yep, Glencoe didn't get posh til at least the 80's,except for East of the railroad tracks--but we lived on the other side of the tracks (the wrong side of the tracks?). Naah, I'm in Pittsburgh now, but spent many summers at Ravinia. Don't miss the traffic one bit, but still miss Lake Michigan. Isn't UL right on the Edens? -

I thought maybe it was a full moon, as we all seem to have gone barking mad. But apparently, it's only a waning crescent. However, I did find a very cool website that can help us keep track of the full moon (this way, we'll know when we're supposed to howl): Open Original Shared Link Awoo-OOO--0000--OOOOO-- Oh, shoot, not time yet! -
ARCHIVED Anyone Ever Cheat On This Diet?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to sillyyak's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Once I got through the first couple of weeks, those cravings to eat an entire cake really dwindled. I did find a wonderful cookbook (Annaliese Roberts' Gluten-Free Baking Classics, which has fantastic bread, cake, muffin, and cookie recipes). I had always baked birthday cakes from scratch, but the cakes from this book--I swear, they tasted BETTER than the... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
(sigh) Rachel, I don't think you are as far off from Tom and Carla as you think. You are each coming to valid hypotheses based on your research combined with personal experience. Perhaps you come across as much more rigid and uncompromising than you intend? I can see that you don't intend to be rude, but I can also see how others see you as being... -
ARCHIVED Music Suggestions For An 11-year-old
Fiddle-Faddle replied to cruelshoes's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Movie scores! The soundtracks to Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribbean, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. And don't tell her that it is actually classified as classical music! If she doesn't play an instrument, this would be a really good time to have her start, and then she can play whatever music she likes instead of just listening to it. It also...
