ARCHIVED Omg...i Might Be On To Something
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Copycat recipe posted under the gluten-free recipes section! I should mention that a meal of Skyline Chili (aka "Cincinnati Chili") MUST be followed by a dessert of chocolate chocolate chip ice cream (preferably made by Graeter's, but any high-fat version is acceptable). Dang, I'm hungry again.... -

ARCHIVED Hey Canadians! I Made Nanaimo Bars!

Um, I only live a few hours from the Canadian border, but I have no clue what Nanaimo bars are? Could you post a recipe? -

We don't have Kroger here. Giant Eagle has pretty much chased out all the competition here. I used to live on Clifton Avenue, and we would walk down the hill to Ludlow and eat there.... My kids love the copycat recipe (they've never been to Cincinnati)--they just call it "chili spaghetti," and yes, we smother it with finely shredded sharp... -
ARCHIVED Cant Bring My Food / Was This Almost Discrimination?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to abigail's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I think most restaurants don't mind you bringing your own food as long as you have contacted them before showing up and confirmed that they cannot safely accommodate you with their food, and made sure that it's okay with them if, because of that, you bring your own food However, asking to use their microwave doesn't seem to be fair to them. You wouldn... -

You have Skyline Chili??? I am soooo jealous! I got my undergrad degree in Cincinnati, and every weekend we went to Skyline for dinner and Graeter's for dessert....(no wonder I gained 10 pounds!) I do have a copycat recipe or Skyline chili, which I make with Tinkyada pasta, of course, but somehow, it doesn't seem exactly the same.... -

Annalise Roberts has a similar recipe in her cookbook (it might be on her website, too), except she adds gluten-free crisp rice cereal and only uses one stick of butter, I think. At any rate, it's too much work to roll all those little balls, so I usually spread the peanut mixture in a pan, and then swirl the melted chocolate on top, chill'em, and slice... -

Hi, everyone! I'm trying (pant, pant) to keep up with you guys! I don't have anything helpful, interesting, or relevant to add, but I'm enjoying reading along! Jin, your avatar is amazing! -
ARCHIVED They Messed Up The Samples On My Daughters Biopsy
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Electra's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would not recommend a biopsy if the outbreak is not very bad. I had one that turned out negative (and left me with two HORRIBLE scars) because I had been on Prednisone the month before and had been gluten-free for a month--and the doctor didn't tell me that that would screw up the results. In my case, I believe that it WAS DH because I have not been able... -
ARCHIVED Miracle Workers Advice Needed
Fiddle-Faddle replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Exactly what I was thinking! If her intestines are chronically inflamed, and her mother has serious enough problems with gluten to need to be gluten-free, seems to me that the most likely culprit would be gluten, even if she is gluten-lite. Nothing to lose by going completely off gluten (except pain)! I agree with you on the ear infection/ruptured... -

I couldn't tell from your post--is your daughter gluten-free as well as CF? Could soy or eggs possibly be a problem as well? Another thing to consider is that vaccines can have serious side effects, especially when a child at risk (for example, a child with serious food sensitivities) receives many vaccines at once. There simply are NO long-term studies... -
ARCHIVED Might Go Back On Gluten
Fiddle-Faddle replied to whattodo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just wondering--have they ruled out an ulcer? Since they are doing an H Pylori test tomorrow, it sounds like they are only just now starting to suspect it, but did they ever mention it as a possibility? Do you drink a lot of coffee, orange juice, or sodas? Do you eat a lot of potentially irritating foods like tomato sauce or acidic dressings with vinegar... -
ARCHIVED Why Biopsy With Positive Ema?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Boffin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm really glad you had such a positive experience. I have had two endoscopies (and in neither of them were they looking for celiac ), both without sedation. The first one was just fine, and I had no after effects. The second one was also just fine--except my vocal chords somehow got irritated or scratched. I was only hoarse for a couple of... -

Jin, if you are not dairy-intolerant, try taking some shredded sharp cheddar cheese and frying little mounds of it in a little butter (flip with a spatula to fry both sides). Yum Yum Yum!!!! -
ARCHIVED Why Biopsy With Positive Ema?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Boffin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome aboard! My understanding from what I have read over and over on this board over the last year is that the blood tests may have false NEGATIVES, but not false positives. The biopsy, on the other hand, only provides an accurate positive if the doctor happens to biopsy a damaged area. Keep in mind that you have over 22 FEET of intestines, and... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi, everyone, thank you SO much for the warm welcome back! Jin, any chance you could switch to green tea? It still has caffeine, but less than coffee, and it's less acidic, too. Besides, it's more consistent with your Asian soul!!!! You could drink however many cups would equal your coffee caffeine hit, and gradually taper off. Lisa, I don... -

Hi, Andrea (and the rest of Rachelville)! I've been trying to keep up with you guys--boy, are you prolific these days! Sounds like lots of answers have been found. Hooray for answers! ARCHIVED Modified Food Starch - Correction Of Misconception
Fiddle-Faddle replied to RKB-MD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Scott, one possibility that you might have missed is that products made in the US do not need to use Modified Food Starch that was made in the US. They can use any source of Modified Food Starch that they want. -

ARCHIVED Modified Food Starch - Correction Of Misconception
Fiddle-Faddle replied to RKB-MD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sure, it ought to be Celiac 101. But it isn't. Look how many people post here, asking, "Is this safe?" And heck, after reading over and over (here) that MFS is safe, I've started eating products that contain it but don't list wheat or barley(and I've been noticing a huge increase in rashes and digestive problems, hmm hmm hmmm ). But just yesterday... -
ARCHIVED Modified Food Starch - Correction Of Misconception
Fiddle-Faddle replied to RKB-MD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So much of what we assume is made in the US is not. I have in front of me a carton of Campbell's Select Gold Label soup. I always assumed Campbell's was made in the US, but it states: "product of Canada." I have several other canned or dried products that say, "distributed by," but they don't say where they were made. I'm afraid we are stuck with... -
Nope, can't agree with that today, at least, not if you have a computer. You don't need to know what you are looking for. I had no clue what I was looking for when I googled, "rash" and "thyroid," because that's all I had to go on, and I still found celiac. I didn't realize I was having digestive symptoms til they went away (now, doesn't that sound...

Um, it seems to me that all he did was post an opinion contrary to yours. I don't see that as a good excuse to make the comparison to a bull in a china shop, nor to make a snide cut at his profession. And the word "gentile" means "non-Jewish." I assume you simply don't know how to spell "gentle;" otherwise, it looks like you are making a religious statement...
