  1. Walter! You're back! Okay, maybe I'm a bit too rigid here, but this would be my rule #1: DON'T EAT ANYTHING YOU HAVE NOT PREPARED FROM SCRATCH YOURSELF. If you find yourself at a social function where food is served, pack something from home, and eat it at the buffet. It's really not that big a deal if you don't make it a big deal. The chicken...
  2. NGG, you look stunningly beautiful in that picture, and the brown hair IS gorgeous--such a warm alive, color! You might find that your hair color has much more life (i.e., no more mousy brown) now that you are off gluten. That's what happened to me!
  3. There are two VERY old Alfred Hitchcock movies you'd probably love, too: "The Lady Vanishes" and "The Thirty-Nine Steps." In the first one, the pretty girl even tells the man, "Ooh, you're the most contemptible man I've ever met!" In the second one, the pretty girl ends up handcuffed to the man (who of course is totally innocent). In both...
  4. Corn chips actually could have something to do with it if they are really salty--if you retain water, there's more to smoosh. Time of month is also key--apparently, mammograms are more accurate during the first 10-14 days of your cycle, as the second half of our cycles, we tend to--guess what--retain fluid, and things are harder to spot.
  5. A friend of mine who is a sports medicine doctor swears by her chiropractic for carpal tunnel, as do several violinists I know....They all say that the chiropractor fixes it in 1-3 visits, as opposed to surgery and months of PT. Might be worth checking out, Darlindeb!
  6. Wow, more fascinating info from you guys! And those baby pictures--you all are just TOO CUTE! Rachel, it's kinda scary--your latest pic looks a lot like my daughter... When I was in college, the dorm cafeteria always had a huge bowl of bright pink yogurt at the salad bar. We called it "Pepto-Bismol Yogurt," and I still call that shade of pink...
  7. Jerry WHO? I do have to remember that I can't make a sandwich for myself with the gluten bread my husband insists on buying, but it's not because I want the bread (I actually prefer my homemade gluten-free bread to the sawdusty Wonder bread hubby likes). It's because I'm so used to making a sandwich with whatever loaf is on the counter, and I keep...
  8. Yep--love it with regular milk and just a splash of cream....(I'm hungry)
  9. Whoopsie--Malt o Meal has never been gluten-free (malt is gluten); that old web site was wrong, as are half the nutritionists out there! I'm so sorry so many of you are having a tough time. Should we try to figure out where so many of you are getting glutened? I know I had a tough time the first few months til I figured it all out, thanks to...
  10. It's possible that once your intestines have healed, you might be able to eat dairy again. This has been true for many of us, but not all. If you don't have a dairy intolerance, but just gluten intolerance, the leaky gut caused by the gluten intolerance can cause you to have trouble digesting all sorts of things. It usually takes a few months to a year...
  11. Thank you for posting this. Does that mean that the Mesa Sunrise cereal sold in the US is safe or not? The ones sold here are also 300 grams, but they don't have a best-before date or anything labeled as a batch #. This is frustrating--it's my favorite cereal!!
  12. Wish it were clear that it was or wasn't Bell's Palsy. I had NO droop, and NO paralysis. Just numbness of the skin, and that area of skin was slightly paler than the rest of my face. The numbness went away the first time when my thyroid meds were adjusted, and came back just before I went off gluten, at which point it disappeared for good (I hope...
  13. Is it the Bell's Palsy that's a sign of Lyme or the numbness? Or both? Either way, seems like it might be worth bringing up in any thread where you feel it's appropriate, just as a possibility to be explored?
  14. Holy cow. Unless you are a gymnast, obviously something is not right here. Are you TOTALLY off gluten, if you are gluten intolerant? Unfortunately, "gluten-lite" can result in most (if not all)of the same damage that the normal gluteny diet can cause. Gluten intolerance, in my opinion WILL lead to celiac (as diagnosed by villi damage) if you keep eating...
  15. I sure hope that the dieticians in the UK know more than most in the states! Most here don't seem to know that Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies are not gluten-free, or that barley malt and soy sauce are on the no-no list! And I do believe that in the UK, wheat starch is officially considered gluten-free, but here in the states it's a total No-No. Two days...
  16. I wish I knew enough to give you an answer! I do know, however, that IBS is a list of symptoms, not a disease. Those symptoms just happen to be identical to those of celiac. Many here (myself included) believe that IBS is a "trash bin" diagnosis, when the doctor has no idea what is CAUSING the symptoms, but gives you an official "diagnosis" of IBS and...
  17. Me, too! Note: they have the place to click to vote for the White Nacho flavor above the bag of Smoky Barbecue Chips, not above the White Nacho chips--potentially confusing!
  18. Well, there are a lot of variables. If you ARE celiac or gluten-intolerant, then you need to be gluten-free so that your intestines can heal enough for you to actually be able to absorb the vitamins, and that could take weeks to months or longer, depending on whther or not you have damaged villi, and how extensive the damage, etc. But are you relying...
  19. It depends on which tests are run, and who reads them. My IgG was ridiculously high which definitely indicates a problem with gluten, but the doctor who ordered the tests said that they were negative. Later, my endocrinologist read them, and said it definitely was celiac. Go figure. It also depends how much gluten you were eating at the time of the...
  20. You are not crazy!!! Welcome to the board. You might try printing out a list of your previous symptoms and how many of them have resolved since stopping gluten. Bring that to your doctor. If he has it in his records (or her records), he is less likely to call you crazy because that would be setting himself up for malpractice. Unfortunately, too...
  21. YES!!! I had this on one side of my face. Doctor said on the phone that it was probably Bell's Palsy, but I kept insisting that there was no paralysis or dropping. (Sound familiar?) My thyroid meds were too high, and when they were dropped down, the numbness went away, but then it came back later (more mildly, though), and my thyroid levels were fine...
  22. Welcome! I just wanted to add that if you check the list of symptoms for fibro and the list of symptoms for celiac disease--they are practically identical. Many people on this board have seen their fibro symptoms completely disappear when they stay on a gluten-free diet. And I remember seeing posts from at least 2 women whose hair did grow back...
  23. For the recipes that only require 1/4 cup or less of flour, I have found that I can substitute potato starch or rice flour with no problem (no xanthan gum needed!).
  24. Hey, mtndg, good to see you! Sorry you've been feeling worse, hope that improves, and quickly! I have the defective esophagus, too (hital hernia). I was hoping the GERD would go away gluten-free, as I've been on Nexium for over a year, Prilosec before that, Zantac before that.... I actually tried going off the Nexium a month ago, with very strange...
  25. Welcome, Gail! I'm more or less self-diagnosed, too --my Dr. claimed that a sky-high IgG did not indicate celiac or a problem with gluten(??!!??!!) , so we're pretty much in the same boat!
