  1. Let's bring religion back into it! Ursula, I've decided that what you need is a Jewish mother who would fuss over you, make you chicken soup from scratch (with a Kosher chicken!), and scream bloody murder if anybody brought a molecule of gluten over the doorstep! :P

Hey wait... I might not deserve it like Ursula but that sure sounds nice to me... but at my age I'm not going to have that op :o ahem....

  2. Thanks for the suggestions . . . enterolab is out at the moment. . . I can't afford it. I'm getting some tests for nutritional deficiencies though.

I did find out on my last visit to the GI that he *did* run the full celiac panel (I should change my signature). . . EMA was negative. I asked him whether it would be worth our while to repeat the blood test since he put me back on barley for awhile and he did . . . so before I do anything, I'll wait until I get those results back.

My doctor initially suggested that we do the GI procedure without the drugs . . . but I have serious gagging issues and some problems with swallowing (those old style Tylenol pills really hurt on the way down. I need to eat meat with water by my side because it sticks in my throat.) But perhaps I'd be okay if I had some topical anaesthetic applied . . .

I won't pretend its pleasant...it's not BUT I personally (as someone with severe gagging, I haven't seen a dentist in 10 yrs) would prefer not to have the ketamine cocktail at all.

Its still unpleasant, you just don't remember it... (immediately..I'm waiting for peoples artificially repressed memories to start coming out in 5-10 yrs....)

  3. gfp said Personally I'm not ready to exclude Lymes disease as a possible trigger for some celiacs...we don't know enough IMHO... but I am ready to say that it can't possibly cause ALL cases because of what you say and also many celiacs live in Lyme free areas they have never left!

There are no Lyme free areas in my opinion. Some areas have fewer cases than others, but no place is free of disease. Animals travel, birds migrate, pets travel with their humans. Everyone should be alert to it. Many of us who have this long term never had a rash.......keep that in mind!

There are only three species of ticks able to carry lymes disease and transmit it.

To my knowledge noone who has never left Iceland ever contracted Lymes disease. However iceland has a large celiac population.

I read this post and did not think you were implying anyone was "mentally disturbed." It didnt come across that way to me anyway.

No and I doubt fiddle-faddle meant it that way BUT... if someone is bipolar or paranoid (Im in no way suggesting Gina is) then it could be interpreted that way....

  4. This should be a lesson to us all. I got this when I was an exchange student in Mexico years ago. They'd talk about me thinking I didn't understand. When I was perfectly ready, I'd let them know I did.

Don't know if I could eat raw beef. Sushi -- I like.

Seriously up to a few years ago I thought Sushi was UGGGHGGG let alone raw beef.

Its just getting used to the idea.....

Like eKatherine says its easier to digest .. once you cook it it starts getting harder and less digestible and this is why its popular in continental Europe in summer... the thing is I was brought up to beleive it would kill me... then I see all these French people eating it and not dying....

  5. Did you read the ingredients?

If you don't know 100% what is in something AND how it was prepared, you have every reason to eat in fear....that is scary to me!

When in doubt, go without. I know it is tough and it gets tiring. And boring. And frustrating. And all those other conflicting emotions. But your fear WILL go away when you are truly eating 100% gluten-free all the time.

I'm sorry you are sick...I hope you feel better!

    I gotta agree.....

its pretty sad it was a chicken sald you could have made yourself but we all make mistakes and we learn from them.

Hope you start picking up soon.... look on this as a learning experience not in a negative way

  6. I will make sure I ask a protein question. I suppose dehydrated meat would be okay because chickend jerky done raw would be okay and it is protein.

Just get good quality meat (beef) or fish and eat it raw!

You shoudn't eat raw pork unless its cured longer than trychinacia can gestate.

I also don't see why you can't cheat and have seared tuna or seared beef with just the outside cooked.

I also second the Fit for Life (though the style rubs me up)

I wouldn't trust uncooked meats either. I once saw someone poke a hole in a raw egg and literally suck it out of the shell YUK!! I heard every egg has some salmenila, but it's just that we can tolerate a certain amount without feeling sick from it. I felt ill just watching!

    Seriously its just cultural....

I eat raw meat and eggs all summer, its the safest bet in Paris from a gluten standpoint.

I was really really anti-raw anything .. seriously and the first time i ate sushi I gagged the whole time and the same with steak tartare (which has raw egg and beef)

Not long ago I was at a resto with friends (half anglophone and half francophone) and ordered beef carpaccio starter and steak tartare main course...

The Americans at the table next to me looked HORRIFIED as I tucked into the carpaccio.... and not knowing we spoke English started commenting and I joked about what they would say when I got my main course (In French).

As it happened they paid up early after making some very offensive comments about the French being like animals and dirty ..

Guess what... noone ever gets sick of fresh organic beef or eggs... either in France, Italy or Spain and indeed they live longer and have lower infant mortality. (As do the Japanese who eat a lot of raw fish)

I understand your UGGHGH factor .... but honestly its cultural and the fact the UK and US has a dominance of factory farms...

Organic is more common in France than non for meat and eggs (I have a choice of probably 10 types of eggs at the local minimart and probably 7 are organic free range and divided by breed of hen) and the three that are not are just "eggs"....

The same with Beef..nearly all beef is organic and has a certificate and you can trace it back to the individual cow and farm and the cows parents... Yes.. its more expensive than US beef.... but Im sure you can get decent beef in the US... I certainly had good beef just over the border in Southern Alberta where my friends father runs an organic farm.

  7. Talk it slow at the gym... it is really easy to overdo and complicate matters with injury.

I've had migrating joint pains and what my family has commonly referred to as "wimpy joint syndrome" for much of my life. This is one of those things that improved significantly for me that I wasn't really expecting.

At age 48, my joints give me less trouble than they did at 30 (knock on wood).

I've been gluten free for five years. While you may notice an early improvement in joint pain, don't expect too much too soon...as it may take some more time for deeper healing.

My guess is that you did over do it at the gym as you suspect. It is easy to do when you finally start feeling better. Rest, and then take it a little more slowly~

Great news that you are feeling better!

    Cara

I agree and also remember that while you still have inflamation that too much exersize will do as much or more damage. I'm not saying don't do any.. just take it easy on your joints. As they get better you can excersize them harder.

  8. My problem is that I live ina household where everyone else eats glutenand lots of it. So with me being in this situation I should probably get my own?

What about plastic containers and stuff? Is it just the cooking that is the danger?

    Thanks for the reply!

This might be a weird quetsion, but what about microvawe ovens? Are they safe to share with such a gluten crazy family that I live in?

If you continue in that household like that you will end up getting glutened anyway. (I'm basing this on how you say it :D)

Is it just the cooking that is the danger?

No the danger is that a single speck of gluten so small you can't even see it can make you sick.... this includes washing sponges and tea towels and everything else including the hoover if its used to hoover gluten.

    HOWEVER

What you are experiencing is VERY NORMAL.....

Most of us started off like this ... and most of us took a long time to finally accept it.

I realise this sounds paranoid and that is what I thought .....

The best thing you can do if its your family is get them on board.... I'm sorry but this is the way it is.

Please search here on CC (cross contamination).....

Read it yourself and let it sink in.....

I wish I could GIVE you my experience .. really but I can't and your questions are really really common.

Please.. do the search and read .... listen to those of us who really have found this out the hard way and try and see if you can't accept that. Believe me; I'm one stubborn SOB and I was so going to be a "mild" celiac when I was diagnosed.... but wise people like those here told me and told me again and again until I actually TRIED...

You can't be a bit celaic just like you can't be a bit pregnant... you either are or are not.

Its not like "having a bit of a cold" .. and even if you don't react externally you are still doing damage.

  9. Gina was the one accusing her of that--but I noticed she did not then post the accurate post of what had been misquoted. So I don't know if there was deliberate misqutoing or honest misunderstanding of intent.

Yes but to be fair quoting what someone else said you said is somewhat cyclic...what you really want is the mods to look at your ORIGINAL POSTS in context and let them decide. If you start quoting misquotes.... well, its decending down the same path.

I think it's far more disturbing that Scott deleted MY posts defending tailZ and asking Gina if she was okay. Don't you think there is something wrong with that? I didn't write anything incorrect, illegal, irrational, or nasty. I was also not notified in any way that my posts were deleted.

I think the whole thing is a mess.... but also unless you did read every post carefully (and not read the posts quoted or misquoted) then its real hard to say....

I can't say I did ... I actually stopped posting to that thread or even visiting it after Taliz brought up "The Fall" ....

specifically because of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg's quote.....

Scott however did have access to the whole lot because they are just moved to a side forum and i think if your posts were deleted then its possibly just because they contained quotes from Taliz...

Like I say, I think the whole unpleasantness could have been avoided by quoting the rule #3.

and by having a WRITTEN RULE about not posting explicitly religious views in that thread. I don't mean not asking for prayer etc. I mean saying ALL DISEASES are due to the fall of man. I think it should be obvious that one is not explicit and the other is...

The bottom line is because this was not public noone knows what went on..... I don't however think Scott is likely to have done this lightly; lets face it if I thought he was like that I wouldn't be posting this!

  10. This is really interesting--I am great with Nexium, but Omeprazole doesn't really work for me. Neither does Ranitidine. What food combinations do you use?

Well food combining is a bit misleading, its more accuratly food non-combining...

Basically its seperating meals into high protein (acid digestion) and carbs (enzymic less acid) and not eating them at the same time.

You can google "Hay's diet" or grab a book.

I first read (on the advice of a friends wife with Chron's) Fit for Life.

To be honest I found it a bit too "hippy" (bearing in mind I'm pretty hippy myself) but i then found a UK book called "The Kensington diet" which was a bit more down to earth but really saying the same EXCEPT he recommends staying away from "problem foods" or eating them only 1 day a week...

Problem foods are what WE would think. Gluten, Dairy and Soy and this is how I first discovered my gluten problem.

I'd say give it a go.... but Im not sure if it will work as well with the acid inhitors since its "meant" to let your body produce the right amount naturally. Thing is its NOT going to hurt you :D even if it doesn't work for you....

  11. ditto the above two posts. I def thought it was overkill. But, I am extremely sensitive and learned. Gluten is gluten is gluten. Think of it like rat poison (numerous people on this board have posted this example, including Carla, and it helps me remember). Would you dip your knife in butter that had touched rat poison, even potentially?

Absolutely and most rat poisions are nowhere near so toxic as gluten, indeed millions of people take them everyday as Rx medicines.

It is a personal decision, but you will probably find that the majority on this board will say that cross contamination is just as important as using ingredients that are gluten free. I would not eat something that I do not know what has been in it. Plain and simple. My family and friends know that if they cook for me, it has to be 1. gluten-free ingredients and 2. free of CC. Not an option...I just won't eat it if I am 100% certain.

I hope this helps. We have separate butters, mayos, dips, etc. in our house and it worked fine (until I was dx with other intolerances). We all have moments of doing something we 'know' we shouldn't....it is a learning process and very difficult. But, the goal is to learn as quickly as possible and make smart, logical decisions that will help our health. And if you agree with this, you will need the 110% support of bf.

And I agree with that 110%.... too.

Because Im new to all this I dont know what is overkill or not. I keep hearing about the CC issue and I guess a part of me finds it hard to believe that tiny amounts of gluten can cause damage.

Look its up to you but .... whereas there is no harm in overkill there is in CC.

When you are newly diagnosed you are at your most vulnerable both physically and mentally.

I firmly believe this decision should be taken later NOT before you try 100% gluten-free (and that means no CC) ...

You don't have to beleive it 100% right now... you can prove it to yourself by being 100% gluten-free and sooner or later like the rest of us you will slip up and realise.

  12. Lyme disease is scary ...knew someone who had it unknowingly at first; after diagnosis she had to go on disability for a year; on heavy anti biotics and it pretty much kept her in bed most of day.

Perhaps in Tailz's case she should have a shunning for let's say 6 mos and allowed to return on a "trial" basis.

What disturbed me most about the Tailz case is that according to other posters she re-quoted others but changed their words around or cut out sentences and/or amended their words in the re-quote to be comprehended some way differently than the original intent. This bothers me more than "religion" discussion and more than "silver as a medicine" discussion and more than her opening up a second screen name.

I agree completely ... indeed if she is diagnosed again as not having lymes i really worry....

I equally agree that her deliberate quoting out of context was #1.... and this is the point the mods seem to have completely missed! They were blaming Gina for trying to say "that's not what I said"....

The problem is they read what she said Gina said...... and Yes she did say those words but Taliz took them and cut out parts to make them say something completely different. Lets take a non religious quote :D

I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.

    is not the same as

I submit that an individual who breaks a law is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.

    or

Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars... Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

Is not "I believe in"+"Returning violence for violence" + "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

Yes MLK Jnr said all these things but in different places and different times and this is NOT what he said!

  13. wow...

hmmm she did try to tell me that both I and my daughter need to be tested for Lyme...um, I've already been tested and my daughter was sick from BIRTH... doubt seriously it was ever Lyme!

I think the sad part is you could have gone and had tests including the recommended one and I don't get the impression she would have let it go.

Personally I'm not ready to exclude Lymes disease as a possible trigger for some celiacs...we don't know enough IMHO... but I am ready to say that it can't possibly cause ALL cases because of what you say and also many celiacs live in Lyme free areas they have never left!

It's Scott's board and he can ban anyone he sees fit to for his own reasons, but I'm sure he didn't do it lightly. Thanks Scott for all your hard work.

I agree completely... as I said Scott hosts the forum as an addition to celaic.com, he doesn't NEED to and he doesn't CHARGE for it. If people are not happy with the way he runs it they are free to leave and get a 100% money back guarantee.

That being said I don't think its healthy having 'hidden rules' and guidelines ....and that confusion will be a part of this.

I don't think tailz was given three strikes, that's for sure.

Regardless of anything else she repeatedly broke rule #3. (way more than 3 times)

What I don't agree with is that this should have been posted and the rule quoted publically by a mod.

If that had happened then I doubt we would have decended into this situation.

I dunno perhaps that's like charging Al Capone with mail fraud? but I really think that the best way to apply rules is to state the rule in a gentle way and do so publically and that way others are not left in the dark....

It stops them pm'ing others with selective quotes etc. and I really doubt that anyone would have had a problem with talking about Lyme's in a related diseases thread so long as people don't keep saying "All celaic is caused by Lymes".

  14. How high of a dose where you taking? Im taking 1000mgs of calcium a day, I dont eat near enough dairy products and am going off them for a while also for diet reasons. I always thought they were water soluble and what your body didnt use it would pee out like b vitamins. Im taking caltrate calcium supplements along with b vitamins, zinc, and biotin because I lost half of my hair length and about 1/3 of its thickness.

I had a blood test and I'm awaiting the results of it regarding a vitamin panel. It wasnt part of a cbc.

No! indeed you pee it out through your kidneys where it can form kidney stones.

  15. Amy here,

Wow! Thanks, guys! :D I was suprised at the info posted already -- really appreciate it!

The crazy thing about my diagnosis is that I am not having celiac symptoms. I had my stomach scoped because I was having trouble swallowing -- they suspected scar tissue from reflux. Didn't find that, but found "active inflammation" in my duodenum. So I had bloodwork and my tTG was 38. My worry is that I will make mistakes and not know it, since I'm not having symptoms, but still be damaging my body. I guess I will have to see after I switch my diet over completely if certain things go away, like migraines -- maybe I'm having symptoms, just not the 'normal' ones. Thanks so much again. I have a meeting with a dietician next week, but I was having a hard time even coming up with questions for her I was so overwhelmed. :)

    Amy

    Amy,

I think you are probably correct that you have "other" symptoms but don't realise it.

The whole thing has been developing your whole life so all the effects are incremental.

I can't promise but I think if you go 100% gluten-free for a few months you will FEEL different and you will also learn how to spot that FEELING. (I really wish i could stick that feeling in a jar and give it you but I can't you have to feel it for yourself)

My gastro problems always come AFTER my neuro and other symptoms and by the time my guts explode I am already pretty sure ...

Some things to be aware of...

A normal adult has diarrea less than 5 times a year. Nursing mothers and people in contact with babies a little more often but certainly well under 10 times a year ... so any more than 5 times a year is not normal.

My migranes have almost completely dissapeared from 2-3 a month lasting 2-3 days each to 2-3 a YEAR (and probably still due to accidental glutening)

I think you will be able to develop your own feeling... many of us experience what we call brain-fog... most of us assumed this was normal until we went 100% gluten-free.... you can't see it in yourself UNTIL you have an outside perspective.

In a way its a cruel irony not be asymptomatic but I honestly think you will learn to spot syptoms you never realised you had. Convincing the medical establishment might be another thing!

  16. Technically there is a point at which the protien is not fully developed. How you could specifically figure that out without testing each batch, not too sure, so you're pretty much guessing. Not really worth the risk.

    Have some seaweed. Yum.

    Elonwy

Well equally important is that the wheat grass contains everything to make gluten.... its passing it up the stem so the basic ingredients are there being assembled and since its not the gluten but the gliadin causes the problem absense of gluten (s.s.) is not absense of gliadin and precursors.

  17. I told him I'm buying myself a new cutting board, and he says that I am being ridiculous and wasteful, since washing it should be enough, and we can't afford to keep buying new stuff because of my paranoia.

You are not buying it because of your paranoia, you are buying it because of his lack of respect for you and refusal to take even the most basic precautions.

From everything you have said before his lack of respect is not limited to you and extends to your Church Elders etc. and I can't see in a million years how you will ever win respect from someone who doesn't respect others.

I believe it is the JOB of your pastor to explain this in a general sense, not specific for you. I also believe that his lack of respect for others is based on a lack of respect for himself and he justifies this by "the end justifies the means" and hence he takes out his lack of respect for himself on others and justifies it by scripture taken out of context.

This too is the job of your pastor.

  18. I want to thank everyone so much for the help!! Celiac disease is so overwelming. I love to cook & thank god my mother left me with the passion to cook which i love!!! Its just the flours in the cooking gluten free that confuse me!. I dont think i have any other intolerances other than gluten. my GI doctor didnt tell me i had any other intolerances. Im having some difficulty because i lost my mom 4 years ago and my dad has diabetes and he does the whole thing where "you'll get better in no time" or that kind of stuff. So he buys his stuff for his diabetes wich is sugar free and he hardly eats anyways!! and i just buy my stuff for celiac disease and then my boyfriend lives us and he eats normal so its so hard eating gluten free! Im such a snacker!! thats all i seem to do!! which is horrible! I have 2 gluten free cooking books that my sister got me for my birthday that have helped alot. But the whole mixing the flours gets me confused! Does anyone know of any support groups out in Northern California? Bay Area?

    Thank you

    I'll be back later!!

I'm sure a support group will really help.....

    Meanwhile ....

Honestly start off with minimal flour substitutes ... they work differently and can be really frustrating when your starting off .... baking is more a science than an art (IMHO) .. as a scientist I find all baking frustrating because its like work :D

making a roux is easy like other's have said but the best type of flour for different sauces is a bit trial and error.

Some like buckwheat are strong tasting and heavy and others like white rice are lighter and flavourless (so better for say a bechamel)

But the whole mixing the flours gets me confused!

Yeah don't worry its like learning to do something with the other hand.. it feels really weird but its 90% just practice and getting to know the different qualities of different flours.

Anyway... no harm in being a snacker ... its easier on the digestive system than all at once but if you take the time and pleasure in making nice snacks you are in a great situation...

For instance things like spring rolls in rice pancakes (vietnamese style) are great finger food.

You can make corn tortilla wraps ... etc. etc. etc.

Make up nice dips and have carrots, celery etc.

I also tend to make up extra's and freeze them for "ready meals" ...

Almost any Mexican food for instance should be gluten-free. Mainstream products are not because they use wheat additives and extenders but when you make your own use cornmeal. Almost all far eastern food with the exception of soy sauce is gluten-free so you buy gluten-free soy and make your own....

This tends to work far better than trying to make a wheat based dish without wheat....

  19. Most Christian and Jewish scholars are not fundamentalist, therefore they take the Bible as historical/inspiratioanal literature, not literally true. So in that sense he is correct.

I personally do not believe that tolerance is an acceptable substitute for human rights. Tolerance is something that is conditional. It can be rescinded. Look at how the word is used: "I will tolerate you." It means you think the person is wrong, you're letting them know you think they are wrong, and you will put up with it for now but you may take it back later.

eKatherine has descibed my meaning exactly...

I was speaking about "The Fall" which was brought up by Taliz in her quote that

If we would follow the Bible, we wouldn't need Western medicine. I guarantee smallpox and polio got their beginnings in something man did.

and specifically the Catholic chatecism states (underlining mine)

How to read the account of the fall

390 The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man.264 Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents.265

As jerseyangle has pointed out this is not really the place to discuiss religion ...I am simply putting that comment into the context I meant it. Literal word for word interpretation is not what most biblical or rabbinic scholars take and is not what is taught to the scholars.

I could equally state the strongly held belief that:

"Latter-day Saints know, through modern revelation, that the Garden of Eden was on the North American continent and that Adam and Eve began their conquest of the earth in the upper part of what is now the state of Missouri. It seems very probable that the children of our first earthly parents moved down along the fertile, pleasant lands of the Mississippi valley." (John A. Widtsoe, Evidences and Reconciliations, three volumes in one, Salt Lake City: Bookcraft 1960, p. 127

but this is not the opinion or belief of modern biblical scholars.

As eKatherine points out literal interpretation of symbolistic events is a fundamentalist minority viewpoint and is not what mainstream theologians from either Judaism or Catholicism (and derived sects) teach or believe.

As an interesting bynote some sects of Coptism and Gnostic (pre-catholic) maintain that the serpent is the hero of the story... and Judaic scholars maintain the existance of Lilyth before Eve...

    edits....

In other words this is not my opinion, it is the expressed opinion of the Catholic church and equally mainstream Judaism. (really I'm sure I can dig up references for that too)

  20. Hey, gfp, I tried to go off Nexium, and it was a disaster (and I'd been gluten-free for 7 onths). I'd been on 40 milligrams; I was hoping I could take Zantac in small amounts if necessary, but that didn't begin to cover the major acid reflux that came back, so I reluctantly went back on Nexium. The darn stuff comes in a capsule, so there's no way to wean off. Do you have any specific advice for me?

Yeah I am OK with the generic omneparazole ... its a tiny different to Nexium (just how the molecule is bound if I remember) .. problem is Nexium is so expensive you don't wanna just throw it out.. the generic stuff isn't much cheaper either but it doesn't give me anywhere near the same adverse reactions (basically all over body headache, shoulders and spine as well as a thick head)

What sort of side effects can it cause?

There are a whole set but for me its an "allover headache" starting in the head being fuzzy (not like a migrane) but then extending into my shoulders and back... and a general overall nausia. (which is what made me think of you)

    Here is the OFFICIAL list

I have to say though it works very well (knocks ranitidine on effectiveness)

    Open Original Shared Link

For both of you I would also say give a food combining diet a try..... it worked for me from being in the panic attack unable to breath stage to quitting the drugs in a few weeks. Now if I get glutened I will start getting GERD back.... and I take a couple of omneparazole and then do strict food combining.... I really think it does help.

  21. Now look, Steve, how would you like it if we'd discuss what you do and don't do, and what we don't like about you on the board?

Erm well presumably you do that in the mod forum?

but that is not whay I am saying.... what I'm saying is this board has a set of 3 rules that are non negotiable and if you ask for clarification of these rules then Scott refuses to discuss them other than pm ...

Secondly most or many of the mods are breaking the rules... it is one rule for some people and one rule for others.

This is more of a democracy than you're aware of.

There can be no democracy without open discussion and open discussion is not allowed.

Do you seriously think that we should be doing all that out in the open, with ALL the members here being able to add their five cents worth? We'd have a madhouse, and people would get hurt left and right, and soon everybody would be leaving, and there would be no board left!

You are mixing two seperate issues. An issue with an individual member is different to discussing a policy or rule which is seletively applied.

So, having said that, this is the last post I am making in this thread. Because, honestly, we have been discussing poor Carol (tailz) enough, likely embarassing her to death if she is reading this.

Well it might have helped to have a public rule about banning.... most boards have a rule which is public that if a mod pm's you after discussion wirth other mods and you refuse to accept doing anything wrong then a process occurs. That process is usually documented and open and can be referred to....

Taliz was obviously breaking rule #3 but since most of the mods are specifically breaking rule #2 how should this be interpreted?

In a democracy the policy and rules are open they are hidden or at least the application of them. That is fine but you have to accept that the policy is hidden.

As I said in my post Scott provides the forum as an extra to his commerical web site, if he wants to set the rules it's up to him, its not like you have to pay to be a member so people are either happy or not with the policy but pretending policy is open is not correct.

  22. All that being said, it seems she was banned for breaking the rules by having two user names.

From what Ursula said she was banned for being requested to desist and then not desisting.

I think the 2nd user was an extension of this coupled perhaps with her confusion about not being able to log in.

#1 Do not be abusive or otherwise out of line towards other board members. Show respect for each board member, no matter what you think of their views. This is not a place to quarrel.

#2 Do not promote your own business, Web site or products.

#3 Do not spam the boards (i.e., post the same thing in multiple topics or areas of the board to bring more attention to your post).

I think its pretty obvious she was breaking #3 on a pretty regular basis.

The rest of it is pretty moot really? She was asked not to and wouldn't comply. Its Scotts board and the way he choses to operate it is like coming into his house.

Obviously we as members like to feel this is a "community board" but it obviously isn't; its an addition Scott has kindly added to his commercial website but it makes no pretence at democracy or fairness.

The mods presumably have a difficult job because there are only 3 rules and a lot of gray areas and the habit seems to try and keep everything which might be discussing policy as secret via pm's so its imnpossible to knopw what goes on!

Lots of boards work in different ways, there are community boards with volunteer mods and admins and written rules and constitutions that are voted on by the members and there are commerical ones where the mods and admins are all paid employees. This one comes somewhere inbetween.

  23. Hi, my name is Amy and I was just diagnosed last week -- the day I started a new job! I am having a hard time coping with this. I have a DH and DS and DD -- I have a hard time figuring out what's for dinner without celiac! Any suggestions on where I start? I have been looking on the internet some, but I have found conflicting info and don't know what to believe. Any advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Amy

Amy Lauraj has given you some excellent start info.

The best thing I can say is beleive the most paranoid and then work from there!

Being gluten-free is a lot like riding a bike ... when you have never ridden one it seems horribly complicated and night impossible but when you have been riding one for years its second nature.

In the learning phase I suggest stabilizers (training wheels). That is don't eat outside your kitchen unless you can't help it and only use fresh prepared foods you make yourself... then the list is MUCH shorter....

Expect to make an odd mistake, we all do but as your proficiency increases you will sail through the stuff you find hard right now.

The hardest part is the first part.... because your system is at its weakest and your knowledge at its lowest.

As you get better and your knowledge increases naturally you will find it physically easier on you and mentally easier.

look up cross contamination and hidden gluten on this forum ....if you think its paranoid there is no harm in trying ;) and when you are both stronger and more knowledgeable you can branch out more.

Lots of people debate distilled alcohol and gluten in cosmetics ... I honestly think the jury is out and my personal motto is "when in doubt, leave it out"

Lastly this place is great because even though we don't all agree all the time on these issues you will get great support.

Lastly, if you have a spouse or someone close to help then USE THEM... get them onboard for the hard times when you make a mistake or get tired of the whole thing.
