ARCHIVED Need Your Support In Remaining Stress Free About Getting Gluttened
steveindenver replied to steveindenver's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks, everyone. This board has been a huge lifesaver in terms of support and resources. I really can't imagine going through this without having the Internet. I have some good folks in my life that are great for the support I need. I need to expirement with baking and cooking more - that'll help guide me and my relaxation. I got a bit sad tonight when... -
ARCHIVED Need Your Support In Remaining Stress Free About Getting Gluttened
steveindenver replied to steveindenver's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks, Karen. That's the one thing I try to tell myself - that if I DO get gluttened, it's not the end of life. I'll be sick for a bit, but it'll remind me to be more careful. -
ARCHIVED Need Your Support In Remaining Stress Free About Getting Gluttened
steveindenver posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi folks - still somewhat a newbie (diagnosed in April) and need some help/support. One thing I keep forgetting is that I'm still new at this, and put so much pressure on myself at times at remaining gluten-free. I get so paranoid sometimes about getting gluttened, that I feel I am hindering myself on things. I think it just stems back to me being sick... -
ARCHIVED Chipotle Mexican Grill
steveindenver replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I've eaten there a few times and haven't had problems (thankfully), but I do feel your pain in getting sick from eating out. One thing I do at Chipotle, is I give the server a piece of paper in Spanish that fully explains why they need to change their gloves and get new spoons for me. A coworker of mine, who is fluent in Spanish as his native tongue translated... -
ARCHIVED Ignorant Server Of The Day
steveindenver replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I was in Beaver Creek, Colorado this past weekend. Beautiful mountain town with ignorant servers throughout the area. On Saturday, I went to this little sandwich shop and asked the guy behind the counter (he was barely 19) if he can make me a lettuce wrap, as I can't have bread due to allergies (you know, saying gluten intolerance just never works at times... -
ARCHIVED Challah Bread - Anyone Have A Recipe?
steveindenver replied to ArtGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I made Bette Hagman's recipe today and while it's not the doughy challah we all love, it's not bad!!!! I was quite impressed, as this was my first gluten-free bread I made and I can't wait to make a grilled cheese sandwich with the bread. -
ARCHIVED Who's From Michigan?
steveindenver replied to StrongerToday's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I ate there last weekend when I was in town and it was fantastic. The best gluten-free bread and pasta I've had yet! The manager came over and talked with me (I forget his name now, but have his card at my office and even sent him a thank you note). You should talk with him and see if they'll be doing this again another night. I wish we had a restaurant... -

I found their donuts at Hiller's Markets and YUM! They taste like regular donuts. And Bel Cibo's was great. I had this fantastic quinoa greek salad there. I will definitely go back there when I am in town. And I also had dinner in Livonia at Giuli's (I think that's the name of the Italian place). Fantastic gluten-free pasta and breadsticks. -

This is gluten-free. I called them this morning to see if I could take it before I fly today and they gave me the go-ahead. Right on! -
ARCHIVED Pf Changs
steveindenver replied to lightningfoot speakin words's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I've eaten there twice this weekend (including lunch an hour ago) and was fine. I stress the gluten-free and ask the server to remind the cook to clean the pan out. But like the other postings, I got fortune cookies both times too. I told the guy today, "I don't need these since it's gluten-free food." And I got, "Oh yeah, I guess that makes sense." -
Last time I went to RR, the manager and chef came out to talk with me. They steered me towards one of the burgers with bbq sauce (no bun). And steamed veggies. As much as I thought I'd miss the fries, I ate every morsel of food and it was wonderful. They told me that they do have a dedicated fryer, but they fry fish and onion rings in the next fryer,...

I've had the Ginger Chicken with Brocolli. Sauce-wise, it wasn't as good as the regular one (I should have asked them to thicken it with cornstarch.) I've also had their Szechuan Chicken Chow Fun made with Rice Noodles (not on the gluten-free menu, but you can ask for it). And their Chang's Spicy Chicken is fantastic (that's my new favorite). Side note...

ARCHIVED Who's From Michigan?

Celiac Specialities is closed until Monday (I leave Monday night). So I am planning on making the trip out there during the day on Monday. But, my question is, is it worth it? It's roughly 30 minutes or so from where I'll be in Madison Heights (14 Mile/John R). Is it worth the drive for their bakery yummies? We have a place here in Denver that some people... -
ARCHIVED Are There Any Foods At Mexican Restaurants That Are Generally Safe?
steveindenver replied to Sarah8793's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I ate at a Mexican place last week and they totally took care of me. The waiter suggsted I do grilled chicken (as the steak was marinated). Then I did the veggie fajitas (with the grilled chicken) and the corn tortillas. It was a fantastic meal and no problems. -

I'm headed to Troy/Madison Heights this coming weekend for work. Staying Friday - Monday. Any recommendations on where to eat? I'll have a car. Staying in a hotel. Breakfast always seems hard, so any suggestions on where to dine would be appreciated. I lived in A2/Ypsi for 2.5 years, and I'm sure there'd be options there, but I'd rather not drive the... -
ARCHIVED Challah Bread - Anyone Have A Recipe?
steveindenver replied to ArtGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We were just talking about challah last night as I make a mean gluten filled one (that I can no longer eat!). I'd kill for some good gluten free challah (or as my other half calls it, Cha-hula hula bread (he couldn't remember the name one day)). -
ARCHIVED How Long Does Gluten Remain In Blood?
steveindenver posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed in April (levels were at 100). Bloodwork done two weeks ago is at 20 now. The doctor's receptionist said I need to be at 5. Any idea how long gluten remains in our system and blood when it's tested? I mean, I know my levels were skyrocket high, but if it only remains in my system for 48 hours, and I think I've been gluten free, then obviously... -
ARCHIVED Denver Area Gluten Freefood
steveindenver replied to lablady511's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
ALthough, a friend of mine bought some foccacia type bread at Deby's last week for me - it was hands down the best bread I've had (gluten free). Their muffins were fair, their cheesecake stunk. I'm headed to Cheesecake Factory for dinner tonight. I've heard good/bad about gluten-free there so wish me luck. I wish more places in teh city knew about gluten... -

Pisco's on 6th Avenue is a bit pricier then your normal chains, but YUMMY and they will do certain things gluten free if you talk with them. Their porkchop was fantastic, and they made me the same sauce it comes with, just gluten free. They have the best french fries hands down I have ever had. Deby's I think is overrated, but it is 100% gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Wonderful Pf Changs Dining Expierence
steveindenver replied to mouse's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
PF Changs has been wonderful to me each time I've dined there. The staff has been fantastic with their gluten-free menu. Overall, I think their food is overrated but I know it's safe. I might venture to the Cheesecake Factory tomorrow for lunch with friends. I know their fries are not safe but I think I can find something on the menu to be safe. I hope... -
I emailed Chipotle last week and was told everything but their flour tortillas and bowls are gluten-free, including marinades. And their corn chips are fried only with other corn products

ARCHIVED How Can Eating In Restaurants Not Get You Sick?
steveindenver replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Don't be shy - you need to step up and do what is right for you and not allow yourself to get sick, and to have fun eating out. Talk with your hubby, have him help encourage you or have him talk with the manager/chef/server with you, to help you get more comfortable. Life's too short to not eat out and eat yummy gluten-free food! Hang in there! -
see, that's my thoughts too, that why would they use gluten in that? But ya never know. I just found out the Bombay Saphirre gin is a no-no (for the most part): Thank you for your inquiry. As per your request, please be advised that the alcohol used in processing the gin does derive from grain, corn, wheat, and rye. Therefore, BOMBAY SAPPHIRE and BOMBAY...
