  1. I have friends who have kids that this happens to - and they have neither diabetes nor celiac. One boy gets really nauseous if he doesnt eat and he gets car sick easily. He will start munching on dry cereal to get rid of the feeling while waiting for a meal. It has more to do with an empty stomach than with diabetes. I have a brother in law that gets...
  2. Diabetes in children has a rapid onset. Our son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes first and celiac 10 months later. The symptoms for him were weight loss, thirst (excessive) and peeing lots. Is is not uncommon for children to be nauseated and even occasionally vomit with an empty stomach. My son gets like that if he is really hungry (and his blood sugar...
  3. There are numerous conditions that could cause pain in that area. I have enclosed some links you may find of interest. A visit to the doctor would be wise because part of the diagnostic process for abdominal pain is: the exam, listening for bowel sounds, character of the pain etc.
  4. My son is diabetic and yes, gluten affects his BG - whacky readings, unknown highs. Any damage to the body that results in inflammation (like gluten's affect on the gut) causes all sorts of chaos in the finely tuned thing we call physiology. Stress hormones are releasesd, white blood cell counts go up, blood flow to the area is increased ........and all...

    ARCHIVED "the Trigger"

Prior to onset of symptoms (that I saw in hindsight) daughter had bacterial pneumonia, symptoms became more severe and neurological symptoms developed after KD. Son had symptoms develop (but not recognized by mom til much later ) after severe tonsillitis. Additional symptoms developed after diabetes diagnosed.
  6. Yes people and animals like llamas in high altitudes have small rbc with high hgb and increased number of cells... al of whcih improves stamina in high altitude
  7. Here is a bit about prostate inflammation that is "benign" and I have included the site whcih discusses the various prostate diseases. Based on the info you provided, it may be a discussion worth having with your MD
  8. I think I can help, I am not a doctor but I do lab work for a living (mind you its on animals but the patho-physiology is the same!) To address your concerns about the kidney - kidney infections are suspected when there is flank/back pain, fever and LOTS of wbc in the urine. Casts are common (casts are tube shaped cells originating in the kidney) and...
  9. hope this helps, all it means is that the stool has more gas - diarrhea is stool that passes quickly = more gas = floater. The longer stool sits in the large intestine - the darker it becomes.
  10. I think midwives should be present at every birth - not just home births. I think they recognize fetal distress sooner than doctors. In a high risk delivery - they would be even more valuable as they support the mom and the baby in the hours afterwards too. .. they would have the knowledge and the TIME to explain things and calm mom - instead of a 5 min visit...
  11. El Paso taco seasoning is gluten-free - at least in Canada it is.
  12. and then there is the other side of the story - I have 2 friends where c-section was put off...for too long. In each case baby was born by emerg section - after the heartbeat had stopped. Both babies resucitated but have severe CP. My own birth with first daughter was almost a tragedy - resident insisting everything was fine...but an alert nurse kept her...
  13. it could be a combination of events - my kids had stomach ache off and on for about a week after biopsy. They also experienced discomfort as we went gluten-free - I figured it was adjustng to the new diet more than anything...kinds like when you travel or eat somewher different - its not the food so much as the change in the type of food you normally eat...
  14. I use the gluten-free flour mix frOm kinnickinnick - I use it like I would heve used wheat flour in the past. I have also used combination of potato flour and corn starch but I like the gluten-free flour gravy best
  15. This is info from reputable sites:
  16. Good points you guys! First thing the GI told me was ... all the grains that contain gluten also provide nutrients and can be a source of fiber in the diet. To compensate - he asked that I be willing to try other sources - like quinoa and make sure to include fiber foods - fresh veges, fruit, beans, lentils etc., ona daily basis... Since we were not big...
  17. I wanted to address this question as it was confusing initially - but I think I know what you are asking (?) Going gluten free does not send OTHER autoimmune diseases into remission - only celiac (as in the villi are able to heal once gluten no longer triggers the T cells). BUT the autoimmunity is STILL there and will be triggered again by ingestion of...
  18. Open Original Shared Link This is a good site about autoimmune disease. Autoimmunity requires a trigger - that is true, Untreated celiac can provide the trigger because as long as gluten is ingested the immune system is producing cells that damage the villi. Type 1 Diabetes - although treated with insulin - is an ongoing attack itself. That if we found...
  19. My experience with hunger is related to diabetes - as in I am still hungry but cant have any more without risking hyperglycemia....but if popcorn or chips are involved I have been know to give a little extra insulin When I am feeling hungry, and shouldn't eat, I have tea with lemon juice or a cold glass of water with a teaspoon of lemon juice. It worlks...
  20. Welcome - the reason for the combination of flours is that it means a better end product . Rice flour alone has a grainy texture, tapioca flours is very fine...often 3 - 4 different flours are combined. Several companies offer online ordering - you dont even have to leave your house to get gluten-free products! I live in a small town and nearest city is...
  21. It is a misconception from years ago that there is "remission". Once a celiac always a celiac. Some people may not show outward symptoms but the damage is being done to the villi if gluten is ingested. I think the misconception stems from the lack of outward symptoms - they don't have stomach aches or diarrhea - so it must be better right? But then they...
  22. By water infections - are you meaning bladder infections and/or problems within the urinary tract? Interstitial cystitis is believed to be autoimmune based - and if you have celiac then it is not uncommon to have another autoimmune disease. Recurrent bladder infections can have many causes - chronic vaginal yeast infections that cause inflammation...
  23. Open Original Shared Link UK: Open Original Shared Link Canada: Open Original Shared Link Medical personelle that told me to add celiac to the list of medical conditions already on their (the kids) medical alert necklets (necklets and bracelets are available). In an mergency there are some volume expanders that are derived from or contain starch...
  24. Congrats!!! I know exactly what you mean. Everyone stared at me one day in a restaurant when my daughter finally sucked through a straw - she got it. I jumped up and said "GOOD FOR YOU! You sucked through a straw!!!!!!!!" Not many understand the excitement except those dealing with developmental delays or prematurity isuses . happy celebrations...
  25. My kids eat hot dogs and cookies - we use gluten-free weiners and I make hot dog buns with Kinnick Kwik mix - I fold tin foil into the right shape and pour the dough in there to bake - I prefer them over gluten buns any day. I use Bette Hagmans recipes for cookies, My son recently told the dietician that "Mom makes the BEST cookies ever" - better than gluten...
