ARCHIVED My Dad
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Nah, I'm a west coaster. But my Grandparents were all from the east coast. -
My dad passed away a couple summers ago. He lived to be 84, which I suppose no one can complain about. I remember when I was a kid, my dad alway had a big pot belly. He had skinny legs and no butt. He was so proud of his belly and that he could drive the car with it. His belly was hard as rock(which means all the fat was on the inside) By the time...

I guess time will tell. I'm still not totally convinced that what I'm feeling isn't a placebo affect. Although I don't know how a placebo affect can make my poo better I do think there is a lot of evidence out there that Gluten is bad for us. How much is hype and how much is reality, I can't even begin to say. In my mind, I want things to be black...

Well I'm on to day 7. Feel pretty good. You should see my stools, picture perfect, I should post an image Yesterday was shopping day and we went in highly motivated to find me gluten-free free stuff to eat. I was actually quite surprised at the way my wife is jumping in there and looking at the labels and acting concerned. I think she's worried, that...

Thanks for posting this, interesting stuff. j

Thanks much. What about just plain oats..Quaker Oats, etc...if you find stuff without malt??

I'm looking at a nature valley, Oats 'n Honey Gronola Bar here. I know there seems to be some debate about oats in general. The indredients say: "WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS, SUGAR, CANOLA OIL, CRISP RICE WITH SOY PROTEIN (RICE FLOUR, SOY PROTIEN CONCENTRATE, SUGAR, MALT, SALT) HONEHY, BROWN SUGAR SYRUP, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, SALT SOY LECITHIN, BAKING...

I guess it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why I used to feel so bad after a few beers. I haven't drank beer in a while...it always affected me badly....

ARCHIVED People With Clinical Depression And Anxiety
JerryK replied to Mtndog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, I meant much more than talking yourself out of anxiety, which typically doesn't work anyway. The main problem with anxiety is, it is such a horrible feeling, we fear it. Fearing it causes us to actively fight the anxiety. Fighting the anxious feelings is the ONE thing I did that makes it worse. If you wake up in the morning, wondering if you're going... -
Well I'm on to day five avoiding gluten to the best of my ability. Today I actually ate an apple, that should shock the old system:) I've noticed already that I don't feel as bloated. Also, very interestingly, I feel like I've walked out from under a very thick fog. I didn't know I was in the fog, because I'd gotten used to it. Placebo effect...

ARCHIVED Depression/gluten Link, My Thoughts
JerryK posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So, right at Christmas, I had a cold. In addition to a scratchy throat, sniffles and body aches, I felt very depressed and lethargic. I always feel pretty depressed and lethargic when I have a cold. Makes sense right? Your body has recognized this pathogen....is producing antibodies(hopefully ) against the threat and recognizes that you need to conserve... -
ARCHIVED Day Two gluten-free
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Man I want a cookie. Sorry, but it's true. Think I'll take a trip to the local health food store and search for gluten-free free bread and snacks. j -
ARCHIVED People With Clinical Depression And Anxiety
JerryK replied to Mtndog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Part of the problem with depression and anxiety is this: Fear of depression and anxiety actually causes depression and anxiety. It is a strange paradox where fear of the symptoms actually causes them. Now I don't know if my symptoms were triggered by Gluten Intolerance or not, but what I do know is learning not to fear the emotional symptoms helped... -
ARCHIVED Day Two gluten-free
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's the problem. Everything is prepared! We are a fast food, instant gratification society. All this prepared food is what I shouldn't eat! My family's lifestyle is to eat on the go, we're all busy. It's going to take some time for me to learn to make the right choices. j -
ARCHIVED Day Two gluten-free
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry for seeming so frustrated, but believe me it's tough as you all know. My wife buys in, because she's watched my symptoms come and go and knows something is up. I've been eating a lot of eggs, potatoes and meat, because I know those are MY safe foods. Right now our fridge is full of left-over pizza, Chinese food and Italian food. You don't (well... -
ARCHIVED Day Two gluten-free
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First of all there was no pasta in this soup. Perhaps there may have been some wheat four in the potato, but they were potato dumplings. Next time I'll just not eat if that would make ya'all happy. I can only do my best. -
ARCHIVED Day Two gluten-free
JerryK posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My wife and friends wanted to go out for Italian food. My wife, knowing that I've pledged to go six months gluten-free, looked at me bewilderingly when I agreed to go. Man this was tough. What do you eat at an Italian place that you can reasonably be sure is safe. Well I chose Minestroni soup and Gnuchhi (Potato Pasta) along with some antipasto... -
ARCHIVED Ok, I've Made Up My Mind.
JerryK posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've decided to give gluten-free a complete 6 month trial. No cheating. Nothing I don't believe is completely gluten-free will pass my lips. Admitedly I am skeptical, but I could be wrong. Since the diet will obviously do no harm. Why not? Day one.... -
ARCHIVED Dangerous Grains.....
JerryK posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What do you think of this? I was looking on Amazon, because I'm going to order the book "Dangerous Grains", which I'm sure many of you agree I need to read.... In this review of the book, the reviewer says that(apparently from the book) "Depressive Illness is the most common symptom of Gluten Intolerance". Is this true? I've been on an AD for like... -
ARCHIVED My Enterolab Results Are In....
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the advice, I really do appreciate it. I will be asking my HMO to give me the standard Celiac panel. Then I will likely do a six month stint gluten-free, just to see if I feel better. Just a comment about the vagueness of symptoms...that's part of the problem for me. Thanks... -
ARCHIVED My Enterolab Results Are In....
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I first considered Celiac about 6 years ago, when at age 40, ;)I had to have all my teeth capped because they were wearing down so rapidly. I dismissed Celiac, because I didn't have any of the gastrointestinal symptoms. I re-evaluated this when I began having gasto symptoms that could be consistent with Celiac. I fit the profile, I'm of dutch ancestry... -
ARCHIVED My Enterolab Results Are In....
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks everyone for your responses. I think what I will do now is go to my HMO and give them the opportunity to blood test me. Then I will go gluten-free to the very best of my ability. With my symptoms and Enterolab results, plus the potential impacts if I ignore it, I will forever be nervous about eating gluten anyway..... -
ARCHIVED My Enterolab Results Are In....
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Believe me I AM taking the results seriously, that's why I'm asking the hard questions. I want to know what's at stake. I need to know that I've done due diligence. This not only affects me, but it affects my family and friends too. There are people here who are a lot more experienced at this than I am. I'm seeking opinions and information. This... -
ARCHIVED My Enterolab Results Are In....
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And with all due respect to Enterolab, how do I know they are not bogus? How do I know that they are not just telling folks what they want to hear?(although in my case, I certainly didn't want to hear this!) Any thoughts on that. Anyone ever test low or negative? If I sound upset, I'm so sorry...it's just my personal frustration. jerry -
ARCHIVED My Enterolab Results Are In....
JerryK replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No, I'm saying, I'm scared and confused. Pooping in a bowl, sending it to a lab, then getting an e-mail telling you never to eat gluten again is somewhat daunting and impersonal. Especially given the fact that my HMO will probably laugh at me if I show them my test results... I had been thinking it was all in my head.... I guess I need time to let this...
