  1. I've been talking to my brother about Celiac/Gluten Intolerance for a few weeks now. At first he was quite skeptical. He does admit that the symptom list describes him perfectly, but he's sold on the depression diagnosis. I'm telling him....go without gluten for a few days....then eat some..... He's asking the right questions....what's got gluten in...
  2. Really, I just need to. -Not have the runs. -Not have fatigue. -Not have depression. Beyond that, I guess I'd be satisfied to tell people that wheat makes me sick, so I don't eat it. I suppose I could get the Enterolab gene test too.
  3. Right, that worries me also.......by the way, I feel GREAT today...two days without Gluten.
  4. Ya know, I'm reading lots of information about Celiac. And I do have an appointment with my doctor scheduled....I find myself unable to eat Gluten every day, it simply makes me feel too badly. So I'm skipping a day or two between donuts or apple fritters. They say that one of the pitfalls of self-diagnosis is that after going gluten-free, you might...
  5. I'm curious if others believe there is a masking effect related to eating gluten. I've seldom felt so badly as when I went back on gluten, after a two week hiatus. I wonder why this is. I felt crummy a lot on Gluten, but not as badly as I did after two weeks gluten-free. Had my body gotten used to how badly I felt? Is there a masking effect...where...
  6. I'm wondering how many others get a sort of yo yo effect from gluten. Within 2 hours after eating it, I feel like hell. This lasts about 24 hours, then I start to feel better. When I feel better, I feel REALLY GOOD by comparision...not manic or anything, but really UP. So eating gluten makes me feel DOWN, stopping makes me feel UP. Anyone else...
  7. Alcohol depletes your brain of serotonin, or so I've read. Assuming that what I've read about Celiac compromising serotonin metabolism is true, then you already probably have a serotonin problem. One would hope this would get better the longer you are on a Gluten Free diet. In addition, it now seems plainly obvious that for ME, gluten causes or exacerbates...
  8. Thanks for posting this... Of course it doesn't provide any insight into whether I have Gluten Intolerance or outright Celiac, but it does explain that EVERYONE get's a bit of bad effect from Gluten.
  9. This is interesting and compelling stuff. Explains perfectly to me why gluten makes me feel bad.
  10. First I apologize if this is a subject that's already discussed elsewhere, but I've been doing some interesting reading. The way I understand it is, gluten can, in specific people, cause excess release of this human protein called "Zonulin". Zonulin seems to be the gatekeeper to your GI tract. Excess Zonulin opens the gates wide and lets a whole lot...
  11. Says he feels 100% better in 3 days. I told him I stopped eating apple fritters...I felt 100% better in two days....
  12. Absolutely NOT. I have learned how horrible Gluten makes me feel. I'm hoping to hang on for a couple more weeks, so that I can educate a few doctors. In no way do I plan on continuing eating gluten...I feel awful! It takes about 48 hours of gluten-free before my mood picks up, BUT NOW I KNOW WHAT IS DOING IT, and knowledge is power. Part of the...
  13. Oh no, I'm not dismissing this thing called "Depression". It's real. The problem is "Depression" has become a catch-all phrase. When someone doesn't feel good and a doc can't easily figure it out, they are labeled "Depressed" and if the magic potions don't work..."Chronic Major Depression". Then if you are REALLY lucky, you can become a life-long customer...
  14. Thanks for asking... I know why I want an official diagnosis. I want to walk in to my psychiatrist
  15. It's likely safe to assume this study was not sponsored by the Wheat Farmers of America. OMG. j
  16. So the way I understand it, from what little research there is to be found, it works like this: Undigested gluten peptides can "leak" thru the gut. These peptides attach to the opiate receptors of your brain which can lead to the drugged/depressed feelings. In addition, it's likely your opiate receptors are now blocked by these undigested proteins attached...
  17. It all fits. The depression that I get 2-12 hours after eating gluten. The steatorrhea that happens 24 hours later. Tooth enamel defects....it all fits together so perfectly, like a puzzle waiting to be solved...
  18. What's the standard transit time for the GI tract? In other words, if I just had a bout of steatorrhea, is it safe to assume it was from yesterday's Apple Fritter?
  19. I guess to my psychaitrist's credit, he did ask me how my mood was when I went gluten-free. So there is at least some understanding out there in mainstream medicine, that there might be some connection. The hard part is, now that I know gluten is what turns my world dark, dreary and anxious, how do I continue eating it long enough to get an official...
  20. Folks 6 years ago I was diagnosed with Depression and Anxiety. To make a long story short, I was given multiple trials of medications, even an atypical anti-psychotic(which made me gain 30 lbs). (No kidding, this drug made me wake up in the fridge eating....) Eventually I stayed on a low dose of Lexapro. Can't say that it does that much, but for the...
  21. Hi, thanks for your comments. The gluten-free diet seemed to help huge with my gastro symptoms and energy levels. I stayed on it for a couple weeks, but have since gone back to a normal diet, because I want to chase blood tests and possible biopsy. I felt horrid when I went back on. Terribly depressed, lethargic, irritable and gastro symptoms came back...
  22. So, am I just wasting my time hoping for some agreement from the standard blood tests? It's hard to decide what to do...
  23. Good question, I posted about this the other day. I seek convincing evidence because I have a twin brother. I want to be able to push it in his face and say "Celiac". He has the same tooth enamel defects I have, if I have it he does. I'm going to tough it out for a few weeks and get the standard blood test and perhaps a biopsy. I need to know...
  24. Brian, did you decide to forgo the endoscope?? I'm not sure I want to undergo that... It would seem if I have a positive Enterolab result and a positve blood test, which goes down after you've been gluten-free for a while, that should be good enough..
