  1. If the food starch is named, like corn, then you know what it is. If it says modified food starch you then have to call the manufacturer and ask if it's gluten-free because it could be modified wheat starch. Usually it isn't, but it could be. Can't help on the others. richard
  2. No need to avoid old cups, bowls, plates or silverware. richard
  3. I think I'd find a new vitamin. richard
  4. Just remembered that here in the states gluten sensitive enteropathy is simply another name for celiac. richard
  5. I can't give you a brand but if it's one made by Kraft, General Mills or Betty Crocker (I think they all make these snacks) all you have to do is read the ingredients. They will not hide gluten in other ingredients. It will very clearly say wheat, barley, or perhaps malt. That said, it's my recollection that most of these type snacks are gluten-free. richard

    ARCHIVED Westcester Dentist?

I don't know why but sometimes the carrier for the flavor is wheat. I've heard this about a particular mint-flavored floss (sorry, don't remember brand) and the manufacturer of the cleaning agents he uses told him not to use the mint-flavored. Ditto with the mint-flavored topical numbing agent. That doesn't mean we have to avoid mint. I chew several brands...
  7. Given the results you have it really doesn't matter if you "officially" have celiac. If you don't have it now you will have it if you keep eating gluten. If you don't yet have celiac now, what you do have is the stage before your small bowel is so damaged that you do officially have celiac. Some doctors consider this stage celiac even if it doesn't fit...
  8. Others have already explained how this can happen. Believe me, it's not unusual to have positive blood test and negative biopsy. The positive blood test alone makes it almost certain you have it because false positives are rare. Canker sores was one of my main symptoms but I never knew what was causing them. They completely disappeared on the gluten-free...
  9. The other thing to note is that Old Bay is made by McCormick, and McCormick clearly lists gluten. So with any spices, marinades, or sauces they make, all you have to do is read the ingredients. They won't hide gluten. They make some great marinades and almost all are gluten-free. Last time I looked, their tartar and cocktail sauces were also gluten-free ...
  10. I'm not saying the gluten-free diet is great, but hidden corn and soy is actually much harder than hidden wheat. And much more pervasive. Or you could be diabetic, or... But I certainly agree I wouldn't be on it I didn't have to. You should continue to be tested over the years. richard

    ARCHIVED Gerd/reflux

When I had my endoscopy I was told I had slight hiatal hernia. Apparently this is not at all unsual, even for people without celiac disease. Until a few months agao I was having severe GERD problems and was taking Prevacid. Because of other health problems, I decided it was time to start exercising and lose weight. Once I reduced the amounts I was eating...
  12. I was confused by Molly's post about Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles. She says they are gluten-free, but then says they started adding wheat starch in January. Anyway, a quick look at the boxes shows no wheat starch listed, and these are Kraft products so any wheat starch would be clearly listed. These cereals are still gluten-free, although I assume...
  13. We just discussed this somewhere here -- or maybe it was at another forum. It is NOT true that all blue cheese is started on bread -- in fact in the U.S. most is not started on bread. That blue cheese would be gluten-free. Boar's Head is gluten-free. The blue cheese used at Outback is gluten-free. Several dressings are gluten-free. But you do have to call...
  14. At many places the chef will bring you something fresh from the kitchen once you identify what it is you want. They did this at three bueffets at Disney World. All you can do is ask. richard
  15. In case it hasn't been said, you might benefit from avoiding processed foods as much as possible. Eat fresh foods. Even McDonalds salads have additives. richard
  16. I haven't found one, either. richard
  17. Sounds like to me Benadryl's lawyers have told them to add a CYA statement. I've never heard of anybody reacting to Benadryl. My bet is it's just as safe as the last time you checked it. BTW, virtually every single processed product out there has chance of contamination because nobody or almost nobody controls the manufacture of every single ingredient...

Avoid mint-flavored anything and have them use plain pumice for cleaning and you should be fine. richard
  19. There's no gluten in Kraft shredded cheese. There have always been warnings that some manufacturers might use flour to keep the cheese from sticking, but I have yet to find one that does so. I have found a couple of shredded Mexican style cheeses with gluten, but it's not because they use flour to avoid sticking. richard
  20. You won't like this answer, but I know that Dr. Fasano says two servings per day for three months. richard
  21. First, you almost certainly are not gluten free. If you're eating Corn Pops, which has had wheat in it for months now, you definitely aren't. What else might you be eating that has gluten? Second, do the endoscopy. You say you are in absolute misery every day but you don't want to do this 20-minute procedure that could possibly find the cause? Make sure...
  22. I didn't have any trouble eating but I was fatigued for months and months. It was probably 10-12 months before I fewlt "normal" again. Probably 4-5 months before I could do anything but watch TV after a day of work. richard
  23. I also use corn totillas. I don't particularly care for the taste or texture of gluten-free bread and most seem to fall apart before I can finish the sandwich. Burdee mentioned thin deli meats frequently being injected with broth with wheat. My experience is exactly the opposite. In the U.S., all Hillshire Farm, Sara Lee and Carl Buddig prepackaged deli...
  24. Check with Wyeth about Robitussin. Last time I checked all Robitussin was gluten-free, including drops. richard
  25. It sounds like you most definitely had celiac. Back then, they thought you could "outgrow" because a fair number of people seem to get better when they hit puberty. And then as they get older the symptoms come back. I've seen messages on various boards from a large number of people who went through just this scenario. Now we know that you're never "cured...
