  1. Hi, Been celiac since baby. Been gluten free for bout 5 months. Don´t post often ´cos i don`t know much and my DH works away for every month out of 2 so I´m single and married alternately. I´ve been reading posts and haven´t seen any from GFP or a while. This saddens me because I´ve learned a lot from what he has to say and have also been given food ...
  2. Why is it so difficult to get doctors to acknowledge that there is a disease called ceoliac that if caught early responds very well to dietry changes, what´s the problem? I was diagnosed 40 years ago and I know from this board that others were diagnosed decades ago too. And yes, lots of us were told that it is possible to grow out of it but I don´t r...
  3. It is just like anything else, I think. You will listen to a stranger before you will listen to anyone in your family. You know how it is, Moms never know anything.(quote) Exactly but you forgot the part about teenagers knowing everything.
  4. My 19 year old son has suffered terrible excema for years and also despite a very high standard of dental hygene has a history of poor dental health. He never complains about anything so I´m not certain about GI symptoms but I don´t like to use the bathroom after him.(Sorry if that´s TMI) And no, I cannot convince him to be tested or try a gluten-fr...
  5. Hi, I´ve read here that once you go gluten-free you become more sensitive to gluten and even a small amount can cause a bad reaction. It´s really important to go 100% gluten-free as even if you get no noticable reaction you are slowing the healing process so try to be really vigilant. I´ve also read that us people with celiac disease are more susceptible to...
  6. Thanks for your suggestions everyone.
  7. Thanks, I eat loads of fruit & veg but thought as they were in a food group of their own apart from carbs that they didn´t really count towards your carb intake. (Dumb huh?) I´ve seen the corn tortillas but wasn´t quite sure if they were safe from cross contamination - I´ll give them a try though.
  8. Hi, Refractory sprue is, I believe celiac disease that does not respond to a gluten-free diet. If you do a google search -refractory- sprue -definition - you´ll find some more info.
  9. My diet is sadly lacking in the carbohydrate department. I used to eat different types of bread but the gluten-free stuff available here is dire. Pasta, rice and potatoes make me feel bloated and uncomfortable even in small amounts and I
  10. Hi, Looks like it is, found this recipe on a gluten free baking site. Just get confirmation from other users to be certain though. Torta alla Giandiua (aka Nutella Cake) From Nigella Lawson's "How To Be A Domestic Goddess" for the cake 6 large eggs, separated 1 pinch salt 125g unsalted butter, softened 400g jar Nutella 1 tablespoon Frangelico...
  11. Hi, I don´t have these anual check- ups anymore but I did evry year from the age of 2 until I was 16. A blood sample was taken from my thumb, just enough for a slide and I had to give a urine sample I´m sorry to say though I´ve no idea what they looked for. Back then I didn´t ask just did what I was told although now I wish I knew more. Maybe som...
  12. Hi, Cheer up. First of all, you´re right 7 pounds is nothing and is easy to lose without too much effort. Try not to eat the gluten-free treats at the moment(if you do), stick to chicken, fish, fruit & veggies, don´t keep eating until you feel full, eat little and often rather than having most calories at one sitting in the form af a main m...
  13. I´m sorry you´re so angry and upset but isn´t that one of the natural phases that people go through when they´re given news that totally changes their way of life. If you try to see it that way maybe it will be alittle easier to deal with. Also when you see the benefits to your health it will seem more worthwhile. I was lucky in that I just thought wel...
  14. I agree that if the antibodies are present then you don´t need the biopsy especially since you also have symptoms when you eat glutenous foods. Also, you can have a false negative biopsy like I and others have which totally confuses the issue forther. You should try to go completely gluten-free though to avoid discomfort and damage to your body.
  15. You might have a point Ursala, I can´t say I´ve ever had a headache that´s as bad as the migraines my friend suffers but I´ve had a nagging, skull crushing ache all week which I put down to the oppressively humid weather. But I´ve been eating those little cherry toms like sweets I just never made a connection. Thanks.
  16. Eating even a small amount of potatoes makes me feel overful, bloated and gives me a stomach ache, I´m fine with tomatoes and eggplant though. Rice also makes me feel this way so maybe I have a problem with some starchy foods.
  17. Hi, You have to do what´s right for you. You have coeliac but the only limmits it puts on you outwith dietry restrictions are the ones you allow. Don´t let it be the reason you travel or not. Equip yourself the best you can and go for whatever life you want. Sounds very simplistic I know and I realise it´s not always that straight forward but I ...
  18. I have the same problem with my 19 year old son, I want him to be tested and he won´t have it. The old horse to water thing here doesn´t comfort me as I´m still in parent mode and feel responsible. Unfortunately he´s in "I´m a grown up" mode and won´t budge.
  19. Don´t you get 6 loaves and 6 pkts of bics for your one prescription charge? That´s what I used to get from my UK doc.
  20. I am confused. And I appologise, I am horribly ignorant of this condition for a person who was diagnosed as having actual coeliac disease - not gluten intolerance as a baby. I have been reading this thread and found it very interesting but it has raised some questions for me that I hope someone can answer. Are people who have been diagnosed as coeliac...
  21. I agree that the decision made should be one that makes you comfortable rather than what your ped wants. Perhaps you could have the test to see if your daughter has the gene that means she´s predisposed to celiac disease, if she has then diagnosis might be quicker if symptoms present.
  22. Hi, I have had a false negative biopsy result. I´ll try to expain briefly. Diagnosed when I almost died as a baby under a year old, had to be hospitalised for a long time to recuperate the damage was so bad. My parents had me adhere strictly to the diet and I had follow up, yearly checks ally through my childhood until about the age of 16. Unknown ...
