ARCHIVED Why Did I Pay For A Gene Test?
Gentleheart replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I came in the back door with this disease. Because I was ignorant of how it worked, I did the enterolab tests first, dutifully eliminated all the gluten and didn't know about endoscopies and biopsies until it was way too late to make them accurate. So I depend upon these tests for my foundation. I am happy I did the genetic test. It is maybe not so informative... -
ARCHIVED Question About Eggs
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You might have it right and I might be wrong. I do think the protein must be in the whites, though, because that's what I'm allergic to, the protein in egg whites. I'm pretty sure the fat is in the yolks. But I'm not sure about the lecithin part. It sounds like too much trouble to isolate the yolks anyway, so I will probably just continue to avoid eggs... -
ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Have A Reaction From Handling Gluten Food
Gentleheart replied to ami27's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been told that gluten molecules absolutely cannot penetrate intact skin. But like everyone else has said, there are many other ways for a person to get glutened from just being around it. If you have any cuts or abrasions on your skin, if you breathe in anything airborne, it gets stuck in the mucous in the back of your throat and you naturally swallow... -
ARCHIVED Vent! I Hate This Disease!
Gentleheart replied to ptkds's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I miss out on a lot of fellowship and my social life has completely changed due to this diagnosis. It's just the way it is, I guess. Around here, socializing nearly always revolves around food. And with multiple intolerances, I can't eat most of what other people eat. But I figure it could always be SO much worse. I'm taking the hand God has dealt me... -
ARCHIVED Question About Eggs
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks, Ursula. I figured that. One place I checked on the internet said that you could gently wipe off the egg yolk with a soft towel and then use a needle to pierce the sac letting the actual yolk drain out. That way the "skin" which actually touched the white is not used. It seems like awfully delicate "surgery" to me and probably silly to go that... -
I think I'm only allergic to egg whites. But it's one of those permanent protein intolerance situations, so I really need to seriously avoid it. But egg yolks are so valuable nutritionally and for cooking, that I was wondering something. Does anyone know if it is possible to separate out the yolk of an egg completely enough to satisfy an allergy to the...

ARCHIVED New Symptoms - Need Help Analyzing
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes. I have been thoroughly tested for thyroid issues many times. Nothing ever showed even slightly abnormal. Thanks for the suggestion, though. -
ARCHIVED New Symptoms - Need Help Analyzing
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I really don't want to take drugs if I can avoid it and I sure was hoping to not have to endure an endoscopy for any reason either. I wonder if just remaining gluten free long enough will allow natural healing without all those invasive procedures. I'll certainly do what's necessary. But it just seems funny that the reflux has only emerged AFTER going... -
ARCHIVED Trouble Breathing - Bloating?
Gentleheart replied to Curt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Like you, I am getting first-time ever relux issues after being gluten free for several months. Did it eventually go away on its own? I take no drugs. -
ARCHIVED Trouble Breathing - Bloating?
Gentleheart replied to Curt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have those same symptoms. My lungs always tested perfect so it was then brushed off as anxiety and stress by my MD and hyperventilation by my Naturopath. But I was never convinced of either. Enough people on this board have these symptoms to make me think it somehow has it's origin in celiac/gluten intolerance. Your bloating theory may have some validity... -
ARCHIVED Absorption Problems With Calcium And Vitamin D
Gentleheart replied to BeckyW's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe you could split the difference and take 1 T per day to achieve a nice balance. By the way, does anyone know if a good quality far-infrared dry sauna cabinet can help your skin produce vitamin D. Believe it or not, I actually have one. Never thought about that possibility for it. -
ARCHIVED New Symptoms - Need Help Analyzing
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks so much! I will look it up on the web. If I could just get those abominable heart palps to stop, I'd be a happy camper and endure all the rest! -
ARCHIVED New Symptoms - Need Help Analyzing
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
May I ask which dessicated adrenal you use? The one I tried to use seemed to make my palps worse. I assume they contained something I can't have. Thanks. -
ARCHIVED New Symptoms - Need Help Analyzing
Gentleheart posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was thoroughly enterolab diagnosed about 9 months ago. Symptoms mostly neurological; anxiety, heart palpitations, dizziness and ataxia. Only gastro symptoms were chronic constipation and bloating. After gluten, dairy, egg and soy free for awhile, experienced unusual gastro symptoms. Got constant D on top of everything else, which was new for me and... -
ARCHIVED Giveing Emmah Gluten
Gentleheart replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Like I said. If insurance coverage issues have become so skewed as to dictate a person purposely injure their intestines in order to possibly NOT get a certain unpopular diagnosis, we are in serious trouble. If the doctor is right and that is honestly the REAL reason for all these intestine-shredding gluten challenges and invasive testings, it's a lousy... -
Other than rickets in extreme cases, what are the typical symptoms of vitamin D deficiency?

ARCHIVED Giveing Emmah Gluten
Gentleheart replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have the highest respect and admiration for what the medical profession can do. There are some scoundrels amongst them, like in every profession. But most doctors I know are very smart, way too busy and really do care. So I'm asking this in all honesty. Is it common practice (except on "House") to purposely do tissue damage at a drastic level... -
ARCHIVED Coconut Flour
Gentleheart replied to chirunner's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm looking for even one recipe for muffins, cake, bread or something using this GREAT coconut flour, which doesn't contain and depend upon EGGS to work. I've tried and tried, but have only produced gummy failures. The nutritional/fiber value of this flour is really substantial and I'd love to use it Anybody? -
ARCHIVED Question About The "other" Allergies Shown By Enterolab
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If no one on this highly informed board knows the real truth about these things, then it's obviously an important area for research. Sure wish there was a knowledgeable scientist to ask. I'd really like to have all these inconsistencies and conflicting data sorted out and clarified. I believe it would help some of us manage our complicated diets much more... -
ARCHIVED Question About The "other" Allergies Shown By Enterolab
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for all the information! From what has been said it sounds like the tests from Enterolab are for IgA INTOLERANCES, not IgE allergies. Does anyone know if IgG reactions as found on ELISA tests are allergies or intolerances? I need to get all those terms straight. And I do know about the delayed reaction issue. But I'm still waiting to see if... -
ARCHIVED Question About The "other" Allergies Shown By Enterolab
Gentleheart posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Gluten is a permanent allergy, part of a person's genetic code. You don't eliminate the potential reaction to or build up the tolerance for gluten by staying away from it long enough. Enterolab also tests for soy, dairy (casein usually) and eggs (whites usually). I believe these are all protein allergies. I have also been told they are all permanent... -
ARCHIVED Are There Any Companies That Are Completely Gluten Free ?
Gentleheart replied to marciab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Had a long conversation with Bob's some time back. Here's what I concluded. They DO have a separate area where they grind and package all the things that don't contain gluten. BUT, included in that are soy products, corn products, probably yeast products and all other diverse items they carry which are gluten free. They use stones to grind everything... -
ARCHIVED Mexico Cruise In 10 Days
Gentleheart replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Please don't go on your cruise naively concerning gluten free accomodations. You MUST contact them ahead of time, usually 2 weeks. So probably better do it today. If you don't mind a plain piece of meat or fish, sauteed veggies, a baked potato, plain rice and plain fresh fruit for dessert, for all meals, you'll be fine. But unless you talk to them upfront... -
ARCHIVED Need A Quick Answer About Mccormick Spices

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info. Learned something new today. -
ARCHIVED Need A Quick Answer About Mccormick Spices
Gentleheart replied to Gentleheart's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I thought that's what we were buying. The container label just says CHILI POWDER, but the ingredients label says something else. Totally unnecessary, in my humble opinion.
