Here Is My Story... Would Love Some Help!

Here is what I got....

My son is currently 23 months old. He was born with jaundice but wasn't sever enough for anything and went away after a few days. That was the only problem we had at birth. When he was about a year old some test showed he was anemic and we put iron in his milk. We have never had really serious happen except the occasional trips to the er or doctor's office with 105 temps, which they now say is ok. Totally freaked me out still. We have been very fortunate until about 3months ago.

In late October he got really ill with one of those 105 fevers I told you about. We waited it out and just gave him medicine. He seemed to get better with the fever but you could just tell he was really sick. Took him to the ped and they did a blood count and determined his white blood cells to be abnormally high. they were at 22.5. Crazy high. The doctors just treated it as a bacteria infection and we moved on. My son has always drank excessive fluids no matter what it is. It is pretty crazy looking but this is what always kept us out of the hospital from dehydration with those high fevers. He can literally drink a full capri sun in one breath!!

December 22 he threw up one night after drinking milk. He had no fever or anything, he just could not drink milk. Then the diarrhea started. I had never seen anything like this before. It was horrible. Just pure fluid. This lasted for about 2 weeks. In the mean time I knew that dairy was not good with an upset tummy so he was drinking my soy mild instead. The diarrhea lasted for a month in this form. It was happening 3 or 4 times a day. Not Good! Took him to the doc and they put him on an antibiotic. It helped for like one diaper change. Oh and his stool is the worst smell ever. I mean it really stinks. He had two hard stools finally so I slowly started hiving him dairy back and now his stool is super soft (like thick runny, if that makes sense) and smells really bad still.

Yesterday I noticed he had a few more bruises than normal. Yes he is a typical boy jumping and flying off everything but these bruises are really bad! They are covering his legs three on his back, one big on on his hip, little ones on his arms, and 4 bruises on the front of his head. I am afraid for any body to see him!! First thing in the morning I am taking him to his pediatrician with my list of symptoms from the time he was born. I am worried that there is a link between all of it... Can someone let me know what they think! I am a worried mommy!

Symptom recap...

born with jaundice

Anemia at 9 month old check up

Excessively drinks fluids

At 18 months had white blood count of 22,000

Dec 22 threw up once

Dec 23 Started having very foul smelling diarrhea and has lasted 1 month now

Lost 1 lb in the last month (25lbs to 24lbs)

Red, tired eyes

Loss of appetite

more irritable than usual (expected in a 23 month old... terrible twos!)

Just recently excessive bruising all over

I really need some input. The weird thing about this list of symptoms is that I have most of symptoms as well. This is why I started on soy milk.

You must be suspecting Celiac for both of you.

Talk to the Dr. about testing, or go gluten free and see if it helps. All of the symptoms appear to be consistent with Celiac from what I have read and experienced. You are right to be concerned.

Ask to be reffered to a ped. gastro. It is not an easy dx for Celiac and you should work with a specialist. (I would lie and say a close relative was just dx. and you need to be screened for it.) Remember tests for patients under 24 months are notoriously false negative. Do NOT start the diet, until all testing is completed!

Your story sounds like I wrote it. I have twins that are 26 mon and we had one dx at 23 mon. All the things you said happened to us. I have the same issues myself and also am anemic. We have noticed night and day diffrences since changing her diet. To dx her we had taken her to get a second opinion with another ped dr after frequent trips to the hospital and the last 6 months of dealing with nonstop issues. who then sent us to a ped allergist who blood tested her. We started the celiac diet a few weeks before she was tested and noticed big changes within around 2 wks of the diet. Have you tried the diet? It's a tough diet to follow at thier age, especially having a twin with no celiac problems but you will notice the change if thats the problem.

we had a possitive result even on the gluten free diet.

Good luck to you both. Hope you let us know how you're doing

Just another question here, don't mean to hijack your post :P Is jaundice typical for babies with celiac? Both my girls had jaundice. Our youngest was sent home with light therapy for it. Just curious.

For my Vit D3 deficiency it was recommended to take with Vit K2 (MK7) with the Vit D. The Vit K2 helps absorption of Vit D3. Fat also helps with absorption. I take Micro Ingredients Vit D3 5000 IU with Vit K2 100 micrograms (as menaquinone:MK-7). Comes in soft gels with coconut oil.  Gluten free but not certified gluten free. Soy free, GMO free.

@Known1, I submitted the following comment along with my contact information: "I have noticed that many food companies voluntarily include information in their ingredient/allergen label section when the product is made in an environment where cross contamination with any of the nine major allergens recognized by the FDA may also be likely. Even though celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are, technically speaking, not allergic responses, it would seem, nonetheless, appropriate to include "gluten" in that list for the present purpose. That would insure that food companies would be consistent with including this information in labeling. Best estimates are that 1% of the general population, many undiagnosed of course, have celiac disease and more than that are gluten sensitive."

Celiac Disease causes more vitamin D deficiency than the general population because of limited UV sunlight in the winter and the little available from food is not absorbed well in the damaged small intestine.  Taking 10,000 IU a day (250 mcg) a day broke my depression. Taking it for eleven years.  Doctor recently said to not stop.  My 25(OH)D is around 200 nmol/L (80 ng/ml) but it took about six years to get there.  Increasing vitamin D also increases absorption of Calcium. A good start is 100-gram (3.5-ounce) serving of salmon,  vitamin D from 7.5 to 25 mcg (300 to 1,000 IU) but it is going to take additional vitamin D supplement to be effective.  More importantly salmon has an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio 1:10 anti-inflammatory compared to the 15:1 infammatory ratio of the typical Western diet. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.  I respectfully disagree.  You cherry picked a small section from the page.  I will do the same below: The agency is seeking information on adverse reactions due to “ingredients of interest” (i.e., non-wheat gluten containing grains (GCGs) which are rye and barley, and oats due to cross-contact with GCGs) and on labeling issues or concerns with identifying these “ingredients of interest” on packaged food products in the U.S. “People with celiac disease or gluten sensitives have had to tiptoe around food, and are often forced to guess about their food options,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “We encourage all stakeholders to share their experiences and data to help us develop policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices.” --- end quote Anyone with celiac disease is clearly a stakeholder.  The FDA is encouraging us to share our experiences along with any data to help develop future "policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices".  I see this as our chance to speak up or forever hold our peace.  Like those that do not participate in elections, they are not allowed to complain.  The way I see it, if we do not participate in this request for public comment/feedback, then we should also not complain when we get ill from something labeled gluten-free. Have a blessed day ahead, Known1
