Gluten "phree" Philadelphia

Hi everyone.

New to the boards and site, this is my first post.

One of my best friends has Celiac's Disease and her reaction is extremely severe.  She's mapped out acceptable places for her where she lives in CA, but is coming to visit here in Philadelphia near year's end.

I was hoping that someone might be able to tell me some of their preferred gluten-free/celiac-safe eateries in the greater Philadelphia area so that when she's here she doesn't need to stress about possible contamination.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

-J

You might look at this site. I'll see if someone I know in the area will post or give me some to post

Hi, and welcome to the board:)

I live in South Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. There is a nice little dedicated gluten free bakery on S 9th St, in the Italian Market called Taffets. They have excellent breads, rolls, biscotti and they do cakes to order.

In the general area, check out Red Robbin, Outback Steakhouse, PF Changs, Elevation Burger, and Zinburger. Not sure of the locations that would be nearest to you, but I have had good luck with any that I've been to-- of course, and as always, let the server know of your needs before ordering.

gluten free philly just launched an app, so I'd highly suggest that if you have an Iphone  :)

I personally haven't used the app because I have an android phone  <_< but his blog is great, so I would hope the app lives up to his high quality.

Jerseyangel, thanks a ton.  In your experience, are the chains you've listed ones that have gluten free options or are they also ones with good separation of foods/kitchen practices that reduce the possibility of cross contamination?

Thanks!

This is really helpful  I had not considered sugar alcohols or inulin as triggers. Thanks for the practical baking tips too color coding and baking G F first makes a lot of sense. Thiamax (TTFD) plus a B-complex, and if you want benfotiamine, the Life Extension formula covers that at ~100 mg.

High fiber can definitely cause sudden GI distress especially if it’s a new addition but accidental gluten exposure can feel similar. Keeping a simple food/symptom log and introducing new gluten-free foods one at a time can really help you spot the pattern. Thanks for asking  I’m mainly looking for gluten-free staples and snacks. Any recommendations for brands or go-to items would be appreciated.

sorry a bit confused so I should take my B complex along with Objective Nutrients Thiamax for TTFD but what about a Benfotiamine to take. The Life extensions contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine together or im confusing myself. I am trying to see if I take Thiamax what should I take for Benfotiamine. Thanks EDITING after further research I see ones water soluble ones fat soluble. So I guess 100MG as you suggested of Life Extension contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride. and the Objective Nutrients Thiamax contains TTFD.     would work for me.

I put on over 12kg by eating protein with every meal, 3 to 5 times a day. Eggs, Chicken, Tuna, Turkey etc. I stay away from too much red meat as it can be inflammatory. Scott is correct. I've come across a bunch of Coeliac PT's on Tiktok and Instagram. They all say the same thing, the key is getting enough protein and consistency.
