Gaps Diet Question? And Yoghurt Recipe?

YPG

Recommended Posts

YPG Newbie

Hi, Greetings from BA,

I recently start with the Gaps Diet? Seems very promising? In aha alla...! My concern is that nothing that Im buying in terms of meat (all kinds), eggs or dairy only to prepare homemade 24 fermented yoghurt is organic? there is really not such a thing in this part of the world, unless you live in the country farm!! And since the diet is basically eating lots and lots of meat, broth stock, tons of fats etc etc, Im somehow scare If it really work and I can outrage the benefits? Any feedback from any members?

As well Im supposed to add homemade fermented yoghurts Lactose free, Im waiting for the GAPS Book and need to start preparing it, Im able to find raw milk, but not sure what type of bacterias to add there aren't only buying a commercial yoghurt and added to the raw milk?

According to Doc Natasha Campbell Mc Bride, she has irrefutable evidence that once the gut is heal and sealed, Celiac Desease can be overcome probably after several years on the Full Diet? Hmmmmmm and somehow skeptical..!

Any enlightening would be highly appreciate.

Gracias.

I don't know much about the GAPS diet.  Why not just eat a more regular diet without gluten?

Currently, there is no known cure for Celiac Disease.

You are very wise to be skeptical, IMHO. Keep doing your research before you decide what is best

for you.

I have read a few articles about this woman and her claims about healing ALL diseases and disorders, but I do not know of any way to be "cured" of celiac so you can resume eating gluten without consequences..

At least, that "miracle" has not happened yet..If so, it would be front page news.

Here is just one article, but you will have to decide for yourself what you think about all of this.

I do agree that a healthy gut is beneficial and that good quality probiotics are helpful.

Even Dr. Fasano says our gut health is crucial to overall health. They surely have helped me.

Why not just try a strict G F diet first and see how you do?

I'll just "ditto" what Karen and Irish said.

Now that that's out of the way, if you are totally set on making your own yogurt you should purchase heirloom yogurt cultures which you can buy online if a local health food store doesn't sell them. It's fun and interesting and there are multiple starters you can choose from to get different types of yogurt. It's something I recommend experimenting with if you have interest in it, but not by force because someone who has no clue what she is talking about told you it will cure your celiac.

Well I read Campbell-McBride's book "Gut and Psychology Syndrome" and she made no claim in it that celiac disease can be cured. In fact she states that many celiacs never recover fully, even on a gluten free diet.  As far as I recall she did not claim that she can cure autism or any other disease in the book, but she does encourage people to try the GAPS diet if their digestion is poor as there is usually some improvement to their condition.  I found that she lists quite a few things that can improve digestion and I learned a lot from reading the book, particularly about using probiotics.

However, YPG, if you are unable to get organic produce in your area, just buy the best you can.

I have to respectfully disagree that she is not suggesting this diet treats these conditions. (I do not know what she says about celiac.)

Her website has this headline for her book:

"Natural Treatment For: Autism, ADD, ADHD Depression, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Schizophrenia

“Gut and Psychology Syndrome”, also known as the Open Original Shared Link,  captures Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride’s experience and knowledge of nutrition and the use of probiotics. She believes that the link between learning disabilities, the food and drink that we take, and the condition of our digestive system is absolute.

Find out why the GAPS Diet can have a positive impact on gut health and a wide variety of health conditions."

I think we are splitting hairs here.  Yes Campbell-McBride is recommending trying the GAPS diet to treat those conditions.  I'd have to re-read her book to be sure, but it was my impression that she did not claim that the diet would cure anything, merely that there was a likelihood that things could be improved for many people.  By the way, the GAPS diet is very similar to the Paleo diet and the Specific Carbohydrate diet.

So YPG, I think you will learn a lot from the GAPS book.  There are a number of good recipes in the back which may even help you.  I hope you like to cook!  It wouldn't hurt to have a look at some of the Paleo cookbooks too, if you're interested.

Exactly what we are trying to tell the OP.  It doesn't cure Celiac as the OP stated.  I think it was the OP who said that this author said that it would cure Celiac.  Perhaps it was the wrong choice of words or an incorrect interpretation of the book?

Thank you all for your kind replies, it was not my intention to create any controversy on the subject, at the end of her interview with Doc Mercola, she mentioned clearly that that celiac disease is not an incurable condition once your gut is fully healed and sealed? No big deal, I just want to make sure Im doing the right thing, beside gluten-free diet, first thing first.

Im positive following the GAPS Diet or Paleo/SCD would be beneficial, the only thing that I'm somehow afraid is eating such a big amounts of animal fat, specially for my mild osteoporosis.

Adalaide tks of the yoghurt tips, unfortunately there aren't yoghurt cultures starters that Im aware down here, I'm thinking on experimenting adding my capsules of probiotics Bioflora and start experimenting? Probably won't work? I can find Kefir which I don't think is the something.

Rucko Apprentice

You can order yoghurt cultures from dairy and cheese making suppliers over the internet.  They come in little packets about the size on an envelope, so the companies just mail them to you.  Just find one that will ship to your area.

Adalaide Mentor

I don't know where "down here" is but I just order online. Just google "heirloom yogurt cultures" and you'll get lots of great options. And don't be turned off right away if they say "processed in a facility..." ask first. The ones I buy are processed in a facility that also makes flour but they use separate rooms to prevent CC. You don't need any fancy equipment unless it gets cold there, or too hot, in which case you may need a yogurt maker. But it isn't likely.

This is really helpful  I had not considered sugar alcohols or inulin as triggers. Thanks for the practical baking tips too color coding and baking G F first makes a lot of sense. Thiamax (TTFD) plus a B-complex, and if you want benfotiamine, the Life Extension formula covers that at ~100 mg.

High fiber can definitely cause sudden GI distress especially if it’s a new addition but accidental gluten exposure can feel similar. Keeping a simple food/symptom log and introducing new gluten-free foods one at a time can really help you spot the pattern. Thanks for asking  I’m mainly looking for gluten-free staples and snacks. Any recommendations for brands or go-to items would be appreciated.

sorry a bit confused so I should take my B complex along with Objective Nutrients Thiamax for TTFD but what about a Benfotiamine to take. The Life extensions contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine together or im confusing myself. I am trying to see if I take Thiamax what should I take for Benfotiamine. Thanks EDITING after further research I see ones water soluble ones fat soluble. So I guess 100MG as you suggested of Life Extension contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride. and the Objective Nutrients Thiamax contains TTFD.     would work for me.

I put on over 12kg by eating protein with every meal, 3 to 5 times a day. Eggs, Chicken, Tuna, Turkey etc. I stay away from too much red meat as it can be inflammatory. Scott is correct. I've come across a bunch of Coeliac PT's on Tiktok and Instagram. They all say the same thing, the key is getting enough protein and consistency.
