Hi everyone,

Just a bunch of questions for everyone.

1. During this weather change, does it really affect anyone? I'm finding I'm feeling flu-like most evenings.

2. What were your first symptoms to ease off, and which ones took a little longer to go gluten free?

3. Is anyone ever just scared to eat because you just are sick of getting sick?

4. Does anyone take pepto-bismol for nausea? I've been feeling nauseated lately.

5. What can help me sleep? I wake up fine, crash around 4pm-10pm, then am up til like 3. Valerian sometimes works. Does anyone else get this?

6. What vitamins/supplements do you take?

Thanks everyone.

Hi Lorka 150 -

When I was first diagnosed, it was all I could do to come home from work and fall into bed. I was sleeping all evening and waking up and watching tv for a few hours, just in time to fall asleep for another hour or so before I had to get up. Well I guess I was getting my 8 hours of sleep, just not when I wanted them.

My body was retaining no nutrients, so I just couldn't function. I even ended up in the hospital because I wasn't retaining Vitamin K (for clotting) and developed a nose bleed that wouldn't stop and bruises all over my body. I had to get 6 units of blood and 1 unit of plasma. Once I went gluten free and got my blood levels back on track I have a lot more energy than I have had in a long time.

The first symptom that went away for me was the diarrhea. I had it for 3 months before being diagnosed and had lost 30 pounds. I didn't mind losing the weight, but that wasn' the way to do it.

I do take vitamins. Right now I am taking the Spring Valley Allergy Free Naurally Complete Multivitamin and the Iron. In the past I have taken CVS brand.

Be careful and read the ingredients. Before I went gluten-free I was taking Walmart brand - big mistake. THEY ARE NOT GLUTEN FREE (It does list gluten in the ingredients, although it is the last ingredient and I almost missed it).

Good luck -

My daughter just inherited my Walmart supplements. I'd used them before, but ignored my own advice and didn't read the labels when I restocked last month. But thanks to this forum, I was about to answer another post on what I took and so I finally read the label. Gluten was the very last word :angry: No wonder it was all I could do to make it through the week at work - I was poisoning myself!!! I always forget to take my supplements during the weekend - different routine.

Hi

My son and I have been gluten-free since August and we're both not feeling that great. He just spent the last three days in bed. The intestinal problems are much better but the fatigue is overwhelming sometimes. I have been taking a multivitamin and fiber capsules for the past couple of weeks.

I have read so many other posts and I realize that we should start feeling better in a little while. Until then we just have to grin and bear it.

Only food that I can't be sure is gluten-free. What can I be POSITIVE is gluten-free? Whole, fresh fruits and vegetables. Whole, unprocessed beans and nuts (that would mean raw on the nuts). Whole, fresh, unprocessed meat (that really really really means unprocessed).

For the fatigue try CoQ10. This is an enzyme. I can only speak for myself - it has been a life safer. Claire

on symptoms... my constipation was the first to improve, after several months of gluten-free. brain fog, fatigue and fibromyalgia type pain are still present at 8 mos gluten-free. i have had more energy the past 2 weeks...so hopefully i'm turning a corner!

debbiewil Rookie

The diarrhea cleared up first. Then the brain fog, unless I accidently got glutened. I still have sleep problems, although I've seen a bit of improvement in the last few days. I'm starting to have occasional days when I have energy! Not much, but any improvement is welcome. I only started gluten-free end of August, so I'm about in the same time frame as you.

Oh, I take basic one-a-day. Per their website, they don't add gluten but won't guarantee it's gluten free.

Q. How much gluten does this contain?

A. We do not add any gluten to our products. However, we cannot guarantee that all raw materials are 100% gluten-free.

It was what I had, and I figured that would work for now. When this bottle is done, I might look for one of the others that will guarantee being gluten free. But the one-a day is available anyplace, and comes in several different formulas, which makes it very convenient. I haven't added anything else, yet, but am thinking about it.

1. During this weather change, does it really affect anyone? I'm finding I'm feeling flu-like most evenings. How long have you been gluten-free--maybe you are getting gluten in someway or maybe it is an intolerance to something else that you havent found yet. I cant tolerate much corn or soy and it is a different reaction then gluten for me.

2. What were your first symptoms to ease off, and which ones took a little longer to go gluten free? My first symptoms to go were the diarrhea--the chemical embalances too longer--my panic eased in time--the overall achiness did get better in time, I will always have to deal with my neuropathy symptoms.

3. Is anyone ever just scared to eat because you just are sick of getting sick? I used to be this way. In the beginning, I ate only cottage cheese and fruits, along with caramel corn rice cakes and peanut butter. I never put anything in my mouth that I have the slightest doubt about. The one thing I do that sometimes can be tricky is kissing :P and I am not giving that up ;) .

4. Does anyone take pepto-bismol for nausea? I've been feeling nauseated lately. I find that when I take anything for nausea, it makes me feel better for the time being, but I feel worse the next day. The one thing I do use is Walmart's Equate Gas Relief Extra Strength--I dont have any after effects with it. I havent taken pepto-bismol for years.

5. What can help me sleep? I wake up fine, crash around 4pm-10pm, then am up til like 3. Valerian sometimes works. Does anyone else get this? This I cant help with--I never found the answer. Even if I stay up late, I tend to be a clock watcher. I wake several times in the night--but my prob may be my neuropathy.

6. What vitamins/supplements do you take? I take Nature Made Woman +50 with iron, a good B complex, B12 1000mcg sublingual and I try to take calcium, all gluten free---I am on Long Island now and I have found that some CVS vitamins do state gluten free on them. Always read the ingreds though--I found barley in a gluten free product.

I don't know if this is relevant but if I kissed someone who has drank beer, or rye or any liquor like that I would get sick. Actually with beer especially I would be very sick.

I guess I messed this quote up.

Hi everyone,

Just a bunch of questions for everyone.

1. During this weather change, does it really affect anyone? I'm finding I'm feeling flu-like most evenings. I find I get headaches with the changes in the weather ~ mostly due to the pressure changes. 2. What were your first symptoms to ease off, and which ones took a little longer to go gluten free? I guess the icky bm's... I get really tired at first, and have a lot of gas (attractive, huh??!!)... then the real fun starts. So, I guess you can reverse the order for going away first. 3. Is anyone ever just scared to eat because you just are sick of getting sick? Yes, all the time! I debate every time I am asked to go out if I should just drink a diet coke or actually try and eat something. The diet coke usually wins! I HATE getting glutened, so I avoid eating unless I KNOW without a doubt that what I am putting in my mouth is gluten-free. 4. Does anyone take pepto-bismol for nausea? I've been feeling nauseated lately.

No, I usually just grin and bear it and wish I could throw up! 5. What can help me sleep? I wake up fine, crash around 4pm-10pm, then am up til like 3. Valerian sometimes works. Does anyone else get this? If I am having a bad night, I will take 1 Simply Sleep tablet. It is made by Tylenol. That works great for me. Puts me out. :)6. What vitamins/supplements do you take? I take a liquid B-12 and Viactiv Mulitvitamin. I also take a liquid multivitamin as well.

I hope that helped!! Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!!

Sorry Rusla--I didnt mean that I walk around kissing everyone--geez--just that I draw the line at worrying constantly. My man is very careful with me. He knows how easily I can be glutened and he is careful, but, if I was to get glutened by a kiss, I would just deal with it and kiss him again the next time. That comment was for a smile  --Deb

@rei.b,  I understand how frustrating starting a new way of eating can be.  I tried all sorts of gluten-free processed foods and just kept feeling worse.  My health didn't improve until I started the low histamine AIP diet.  It makes a big difference.   Gluten fits into opioid receptors in our bodies.  So, removing gluten can cause withdrawal symptoms and reveals the underlying discomfort.  SIBO can cause digestive symptoms.  SIBO can prevent vitamins from being absorbed by the intestines.  Thiamine insufficiency causes Gastrointestinal Beriberi (bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea or constipation).  Thiamine is the B vitamin that runs out first because it can only be stored for two weeks.  We need more thiamine when we're sick or under emotional stress.  Gastric Beriberi is under recognised by doctors.  An Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test is more accurate than a blood test for thiamine deficiency, but the best way to see if you're low in thiamine is to take it and look for health improvement.  Don't take Thiamine Mononitrate because the body can't utilize it well.  Try Benfotiamine.  Thiamine is water soluble, nontoxic and safe even at high doses.  I thought it was crazy, too, but simple vitamins and minerals are important.  The eight B vitamins work together, so a B Complex, Benfotiamine,  magnesium and Vitamin D really helped get my body to start healing, along with the AIP diet.  Once you heal, you add foods back in, so the AIP diet is worth doing for a few months. I do hope you'll consider the AIP diet and Benfotiamine.

Imemsm, Most of us have experienced discontinued, not currently available or products that suddenly become seasonal.   My biggest fear about relocating from Maryland to Florida 5 years ago, was being able to find gluten-free foods that fit my restricted diet.  I soon found out that the Win Dixie and Publix supper markets actually has 99% of their gluten-free foods tagged, next to the price.  The gluten-free tags opened up a  lot of foods that aren't actually marked gluten-free by the manufacture.  Now I only need to check for my other dietary restrictions.  Where my son lives in New Hartford, New York there's a Hannaford Supermarket that also has a gluten-free tag next to the price tag.  Hopefully you can locate a Supermarket within a reasonable travel distance that you can learn what foods to check out at a Supermarket close to you.  I have dermatitis herpetiformis too and I'm very sensitive to gluten and the three stores I named were very gluten-free friendly.  Good Luck

Okay well the info about TTG-A actually makes a lot of sense and I wish the PA had explained that to me. But yes, I would assume I would have intestinal damage from eating a lot of gluten for 32 years while having all these symptoms. As far as avoiding gluten foods - I was definitely not doing that. Bread, pasta, quesadillas (with flour tortillas) and crackers are my 4 favorite foods and I ate at least one of those things multiple times a day e.g. breakfast with eggs and toast, a cheese quesadilla for lunch, and pasta for dinner, and crackers and cheese as a before bed snack. I'm not even kidding.  I'm not really big on sugar, so I don't really do sweets. I don't have any of those conditions.  I am not sure if I have the genes or not. When the geneticist did my genetic testing for EDS this year, I didn't think to ask for him to request the celiac genes so they didn't test for them, unfortunately.  I guess another expectation I had is  that if gluten was the issue, the gluten-free diet would make me feel better, and I'm 3 months in and that hasn't been the case. I am being very careful and reading every label because I didn't want to screw this up and have to do gluten-free for longer than necessary if I end up not having celiac. I'm literally checking everything, even tea and anything else prepacked like caramel dip. Honestly its making me anxious 😅

So you're saying that you think you should have severe intestinal damage since you've had the symptoms so long?   DGP IgG antibodies are produced in response to a partial gluten molecule.  This is different than what tissue transglutaminase antibodies are  produced in response to.   TTg IgA antibodies are produced in the intestines in response to gluten.  The tTg IgA antibodies attack our own cells because a structural component in our cell membranes resembles a part of gluten.  There's a correlation between the level of intestinal damage with the level of tTg antibodies produced.  You are not producing a high number of tTg IgA antibodies, so your level of tissue damage in your intestines is not very bad.  Be thankful.   There may be reasons why you are not producing a high quantity of tTg IgA antibodies.  Consuming ten grams or more of gluten a day for two weeks to two months before blood tests are done is required to get sufficient antibody production and damage to the intestines.  Some undiagnosed people tend to subconsciously avoid lots of gluten.  Cookies and cakes do not contain as much gluten as artisan breads and thick chewy pizza crust.  Anemia, diabetes and thiamine deficiency can affect IgA antibody production as well.   Do you carry genes for Celiac?  They frequently go along with EDS.

I was tested for celiac at the same time, so I wasn't taking naltrexone yet. I say that, because I don't. The endoscopy showed some mild inflammation but was inconclusive as to celiac disease. They took several biopsies and that's all that was shown. I was not given a Marsh score.
