I wonder what people are using to flavor and thicken their tomato sauces..I had been been using Hunts tomato paste, but it doesn't say it is gluten-free on the label, and therefore I stopped using it, I might have to order something online if I cant find something where I live....

I use Hunts, usually.  Or the generic store brand. 

 

Contadina did have a "flavored" tomato paste with flour added.  But that's the only one I have seen.  Open Original Shared Link

Well I would much prefer to continue buying Hunts, I like it! and I don't have a lot of options, and so if you are using it than I guess I can  too..also I just found out that it is suitable for vegans...thanks!

I just found this...it appears  that Gluten is not added to Hunts tomato paste but if you scroll down it says...While the below foods do not contain added gluten, validation and testing on the food below is not complete.
 
Wesson® Oils: all varieties

So it appears that whilst this product does not have any Gluten added, they dont want to label it as such,  possibly due to the possibility of cross contamination, I dont really know.  
 
I think I am just going to use it.

I don't know where you live, but if you live anywhere near a tomato sauce/paste plant - I can't see where the cc would come in?    IF they don't add wheat to their tomato products.... You don't use the same equipment to farm. harvest and process wheat as for tomatoes.  I bet they just don't want to have to raise the price of the sauces/pastes by testing every batch for gluten that they know they don't have around.

Yep I think your right!..it all comes down to money.   I feel okay with this though, and I'm glad I asked because I have been using Heinz tomato sauce, which is not great for cooking with.

I use Hunt's tomatoes, sauces & paste. I use Heinz catsup. No problems. Wheat has to be labeled and I can't see where there would ever be barley in tomato sauce, paste or tomatoes or catsup.

Hunt's is a Con-Agra product. Con Agra is GREAT about labeling. Hunt's is safe.

I use hunts, I also use "Simply Heinz" Tomato Ketchup it doesn't have any corn syrup in it.   The Ingredients are Tomato concentrate from red ripe tomatoes, Distilled Vinegar, Sugar, salt, Onion powder, Spice Natural flavoring.

Thank you everyone, much appreciated.  I think it takes a while to feel confident in reading labels, and then believing that you have read the labels correctly!   I have used it a few times now since posting and its really really good!  Thank God for this site!

 

On a different matter I have been searching online for a gluten free and dairy free  balsamic vinegar!! and it has been quite hard to find but I found one on Amazon eventually its Lucini Balsamic Vinegar of Modena.   Now that I cant have butter on my bread I realized that I actually LOVE a good quality olive oil with balsamic vinegar..I have even ordered my own toaster today!! Yippee! :)

As bartfull said, Con Agra (Hunt's) will clearly disclose gluten content. If you don't see it listed, it isn't there.

Zebra, do you access to Earth Balance butter? It's a great substitute for folks who can't have dairy.

Balsamic Vinegar has caramel coloring in i,t and some brands of caramel coloring use lactose, a milk sugar, to help get that rich color in Balsamic vinegar.   Then I looked on the website of "Go Dairy Free"and read the following....which is even more worrying as it mentions wheat, which I had never heard of before.   I don't want to risk the fact that it might have dairy or even wheat in it too!

I am afraid not..its a blow! but yesterday I tried putting a thin layer of coconut oil on my home made bread with my home made marmalade, and it was very good, except I had stomach ache for the rest of the day from the skins of the marmalade ha ha! but no matter, I can make that again without the skins, and so I feel a bit happier today knowing that I really did enjoy the bread with the coconut oil and marmalade..I think I can happily use coconut oil, its a different one to the last one I ordered and it has a better taste.

The 2 kinds in my cabinet don't have coloring.  Maybe look at the more expensive brands?

 

 

edit - I forgot.  You are in another country with limited choices, aren't you?

Yes....but I buy everything on Amazon so its not too bad, and so I am just waiting for it to arrive, its like three times the price of what I usually spend,  but I don't really care, and it should taste lovely.

Do you have 2 day delivery overseas or do you have to wait longer? (not sure which country you're in)

 

I use Amazon to ship items to my friends in Micronesia, but it takes awhile to get there.

Everything I order is shipped to Miami Florida first, and then it is shipped to Costa Rica, and so I can be waiting a couple of weeks, sometimes longer, it doesn't bother me really, its like Christmas time every month!, I order a lot from Amazon.

      Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax. Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.       I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state...

      There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent. People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7. People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.       Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

      Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?
