How To Respond When People Bring You Food...

We have not yet encountered this, but since we are expecting a baby, we anticipate people wanting to bring food to us.  I have no problem turning people down when they ask, but I'm worried that someone will make us something "gluten free" in their contaminated kitchen and just come by.  Should I say "thank you" and not say anything or should I turn down their thoughtfulness?

I'd love others' thoughts on this!  Thanks!

I say thank you and feed it to my husband who is not gluten free.

I can't remember if you are a gluten-free home...if not & someone can eat the food when they come in person with no advanced warning, I would thank them & accept the food , truly doesn't mean you have to eat it unless you trust who prepared... If people call in advance , I would remind them not to bring any food that your house is strictly gluten-free & you do not need any gluten-free food...You took care of the food end before the baby arrival... hth

The few times this has happened, I put the food aside while they are here. Later my hub can eat it or I have given it to a neighbor.

If people want to bring something & ask first, maybe you could suggest a treat for overlooked older siblings? Something packaged and specific - " a really nice treat for us would be Izze soda". Or " I have a craving for Jelly Bellys, but it has to be that brand to be safe". Or " we really are set with more food than we can eat, maybe .......something you could play with the kids like sidewalk chalk or bubbles?"

I don't accept any food prepared in someone's home as I don't know how exactly they have prepared it.  If someone offers I(as mentioned by Kareng) mentioned something in a package that I would enjoy.  If they arrive with a food I say thanks, set it aside and then give it to a gluten eating friend.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
