Silent Celiac or Non-digestive symptoms

My celiac diagnosis started with me seeking medical attention for an ongoing migraine problem. This lead to MRI's that showed white spots on my brain which lead to blood work that showed a positive ANA (1:640) and a trip to the rheumatologist. The rheumatologist suggested the biopsy and a referral to a GI specialist after he felt confident that I didn't have lupus. The funny thing is that I don't have severe tummy troubles. I have some bloating occasionally and gas along with differing bowel patterns but that's about it. The most annoying and troublesome symptoms for me are migraines, fatigue and sometimes I get a little achy. My results for the prometheus test were high, blood anti-bodies were present and my biopsy revealed Grade B2 villi damage (the worst classification according to Corazza, Roberts, Ensari). Anyway I guess what I am wondering is how long after being "glutened" will I have a migraine, vitamin deficiency or other neurological symptom so that I will know that I am in trouble? I feel like if I had the tummy trouble to go with this I would know when I have eaten something that has been cross-contaminated. I just want to heal soon and not risk further intestinal damage or lymphoma.

Thanks for your reply!

Oh, you might learn how to tell if you had been glutened.  I just had anemia as my main symptom.  I did not have any tummy issues at all.  I was in shock when my doctor even suggested testing me for celiac disease!

Glutenings can vary as we are all different.  For some it is just a few days, others a few weeks and others months (that would be me).  My last official glutening as supported by follow-up antibody testing lasted for three months.  Guess what?  I had vomiting, abdominal pain, the works!  Funny how celiac disease can change and evolve over time.

Welcome to the forum!  Have some patience and learn all that you can.  The good news is that you can feel better and no medications are required!

O I feel your Migraine pain!  That was my one and only symptoms for YEARS and YEARS..... until one day finally it all turned into tummy problems and joint issues, (the list goes on and on...)

Often you will notice your "main" symptom/s appear pretty soon after eating gluten (some its minutes, others its a day or so..).

Following the proper diet strictly you should be able to drastically reduce those pains in head.

Vitamin deficiency isn't likely to happen after one episode of being glutened - it is usually accumulative of your body not being able to absorb the nutrients (because of the damage done by gluten over time).

Have you had your vitamin levels currently checked?  (Bringing certain vitamins / minerals back into balance can help alleviate the migraines faster!)

Quick update.  I saw the title of this thread and forgot that I'd actually started it!  Oh dear! It seems my new healthy diet was the cause of these symptoms,  I had a clear colonoscopy, thankfully. Now I know what it is I shall try to resume the healthy diet - the symptoms are annoying rather than painful, and I think it was doing me a lot of good, I certainly lost some pounds around the waistline (pity they piled back on again at Christmas!)

Physiological Associations between Vitamin B Deficiency and Diabetic Kidney Disease https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10135933/ "There are recent advances in our basic understanding of the effects of thiamine deficiency on DKD and vice-versa. Thiamine, TPP, and TMP transporters may have an abnormal expression in diabetes [28,29,30]." I explained this in Monday's post.

Stegosaurus, One size doesn't fit all. Most celiacs do fine with oats and other non-gluten cereal grains. Grains can contribute important nutrients to the diet and are a relatively inexpensive food energy sources. I don't agree with the position that all celiacs should eliminate all grains from their diet. This line of thinking has been promoted for years by books like Dangerous Grains which make the case on logic rather than actual real world data. Like many biological phenomenon, what would seem to be logical doesn't pan out to be true in the real world.  But if you are one of those in the minority of celiacs who cannot tolerate cereal grains at all, I'm glad that you were able to sort that out.

While it's true that lifting heavy weights is a good bone builder, it may not be advisable for those with certain medical conditions like heart disease, arthritis and for the elderly or for those who don't have access to the equipment.  Bone building drugs like Fosamax slow down the disposal of worn out osteoclasts (bone cells) and so help maintain/restore bone density as seen in scans but because the retained cells are no longer healthy, the process may contribute less to actual bone strength than healthy cells would.
