Besides digestive issues i'm curious what issues you guys have after a prolonged gluten-free period and then a few days of a lot of Gluten filled foods?

I have Celiac disease - I do  not have " a few days of a lot of Gluten filled foods".   Eating gluten on purpose would be an act of extreme self-hate/self harming.

Right, the gluten-free diet is a medical diet, not a weightloss/fad diet.  If you want to know about glutening symptoms though, you can search  the forum for "glutened" or "cheating".  There are a lto of threads on the subject already.  There are also threads about doing a gluten challenge where people eat gluten in order to be ready for celiac medical testing.  They might have the info you are looking for.

I'm just curious because i'll go 6 months 100 percent gluten free without a cheat and then go on a vacation or whatever and eat tons of gluten and i free exactly the same.   I was diagnosed by two different doctors through intestinal biopsies and genetic testing.   just doesn't make sense i wouldn't notice any difference at all.  I'd love to notice something so it gives more incentive to follow such a restrictive lifestyle

You know....I always cringe when someone uses the term "restrictive" when referencing the gluten-free diet.  I have been doing this for 11 years, without ever cheating on purpose, and have never found it to be restrictive.  It is only restrictive if your mind set is negative with regards to eating gluten free.  I eat such a variety of foods and have been able to make almost everything I used to eat in a great gluten free version, the word "restrictive" does not apply to me. Now, if you want to say it's inconvenient at times, that's a whole different ballgame.

Some people just do not have in your face symptoms. Where you very symptomatic when diagnosed?

Why not just search "lymphoma" within the forum.  Contact other members who were diagnosed with lymphoma from untreated celiac disease.

Since you are consuming gluten, why not participate in a new celiac disease drug study?  This is weird, but I just received this in my inbox today!

There's no way I could participate.  I can not afford to be sick for months.  Besides that (per my doctor), I'm the Queen of Allergies.  This stuff would probably kill me.  But, it might be a good for the OP since he/she has no symptoms when consuming gluten.  It is for a good cause and U of Chicago has an excellent reputation.  I bet you could do it even if you do not live near Chicago!

I accidentally glutened myself a few months after going gluten free (a cranberry juice got me) and I had the worst heartburn ever that night and the heartburn didn't go away for a few weeks even though I had only a few sips before I thought to check the brand on-line.

I have never seen  cranberry juice with gluten.  which one is it?

I don't remember.  I think it was "Simply Cranberry" but I can't say for sure.  It was one of the juices they keep in the refrigerator at work, not something I bought myself.  Right now we have Very Fine juices which I believe are all gluten-free.  When I looked on-line there was a chart with all the juices and most were gluten free but the cranberry juice said it was not.

I looked them up and they do not contain gluten in any flavor.  Sometimes it can be other things - acid in the juice, for instance.  some days I am fine with fresh tomatoes and lemonade, etc and some days, I get heartburn.  And once I get it, it takes a few days or a week to get back to eating them again.  Probably some sort of imbalance in my stomach acid and the foods I ate with it....Not sure why.

That's good news!  I guess that means my response to the original question isn't valid though.  I remember when I read the label the ingredients seemed okay, but then I googled it and there was a chart with the juices that contain gluten and the juices that do not.  Thanks!  But I think I will still stick with water!  :)

Celiac disease can be silent and not cause any symptoms....but, rest assured, your gut is still being damaged. If you have celiac, you are doing yourself a great disservice "cheating".

Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana

@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

What you've described—the severe weight loss, the cycle of medications making things worse, and the profound fear of eating before leaving the house—is a heavy burden to carry for 15 years. It is absolutely not your fault. While everyone's journey with celiac is different, the struggles with the learning curve, social isolation, and dietary grief are feelings many in the community know all too well. Your question about whether you should just eat what you want and manage the symptoms is a heartbreaking one, born from years of frustration. It's crucial to know that the diarrhea is a sign of ongoing damage to your small intestine from gluten, and simply managing the symptom with Imodium doesn't stop that internal harm or the risk of other complications. The fact that you are still getting sick within an hour of eating, even while trying to be gluten-free, is a huge red flag that something isn't right. This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease. Don't give up!  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
