I have had a really good couple weeks. I felt ok and my stools were more normal than they have been in a long time. I was really happy.

then, today when I woke up I had runny stools. I have no idea why. I'm positive I wasn't glutened. I did eat some cool ranch Doritos last night but after doing a lot of research I thought they were safe. I have no idea why this happened today. Maybe it's not even my celiac, but it's discouraging. 

Is this just par for the course? I'm 1.5 months out from diagnosis. Is it ok to have normal stools for several days and then have this happen? I'm bummed about it. I feel fine otherwise. I was just surprised to see the loose stool. It was half and half, like shortly after I was diagnosed. I don't get it.

I looked on that site too and they're listed under "products not containing gluten ingredients" and people in this forum said they are safe. What am I missing?

and if I'm wrong and they do have gluten did I totally undo all of the progress I've made by eating them? :(

Yes I see they are under products not containing gluten. Doritoes are not a healthy food and could cause gut issues just from that alone.  Don't worry so much. You have to take it one day at a time. If you accidentally get glutened learn from it and move on. It is hard, but getting down on yourself will only make it worse. it's almost been a year for me and I've learned lots. It gets better and easier to cope with especially when you are feeling better.

I knew they weren't healthy, but I just wanted some. This has always been my question though. If I do accidentally get glutened do I basically start over at square 1? I know it's not a good thing to be glutened but does it totally derail my healing if it happens occasionally?

Maybe my system was just thinking "what the hell?" When I ate the Doritos. Maybe it isn't gluten but a reaction to garbage food. 

Yesterday wasn't a healthy day for me. We were on the road so I ate junk. I had a good breakfast. But I had gluten-free crackers, gluten-free potato chips, and a piece of cheese for lunch. Then I had an udi's pizza for dinner and the Doritos. So even if it was all gluten-free my system may have been overloaded on processed crap too.

Those Doritos don't have gluten ingredients but could be contaminated and are not tested for gluten - so you take your chances eating them.  If the reaction was to gluten and not just to junk food it would set healing back some but not all the way to square one.

I would put my money on the Cool Ranch Doritos as the cause of your misery (glutening), but you could be reacting to some of the ingredients in the pizza or even the crackers.  My gluten-free  hubby does well on both but i still have issues with xanthan gum and the garlic/onion family.  Just my own set of personal intolerances.  

Just purchase the Frito Lay's products that actually have gluten-free written on the product in the future.  I ate a lot of Lay potato chips while on vacation in Europe.  So happy to find a safe snack.  Not on my diabetic diet, but remaining gluten-free trumps low carb any day!  

Anyone notice that the corn products now indicate that they are made from GMO products?  That is another discussion in itself!

So an accidental glutening here and there isn't going to send me back to my marsh stage and the levels of inflammation I had in my endoscopy last month?

Eating a lot of fat can also give you digestive woes.  Chips and cheese and pizza and more chips could do it.  I get loose stools when I eat lots of raw vegetables, and those certainly don't contain gluten.  

(I've also personally never had an issue with any of the flavored chips even if they aren't tested.  I consider them a reasonable risk as shared equipment goes.)

I doubt it was gluten at all - just all the stuff you ate that is hard to digest.  No, 1 glutening does not start you all the way back tot he beginning.  It just starts you on the path back.

It's also "that time" of the month for me. So maybe it's my hormones.

I agree with Karen. Plus, the Doritos are made from corn, hard, dry, corn. Corn is notoriously hard to digest, then make it dried corn, with a lot of additives & oil & then on top of all the other processed food you ate, you overloaded the system is what I'm thinking.

The Doritos also have dairy in them.  But you ate dairy several times that day so it would be hard to say if it was the Doritos causing a problem.

I am still unable to eat most processed foods even gluten-free ones. Udis gluten-free bread is a treat. My body clearly lets me know if I eat hard to digest, processed foods, or highly inflammatory foods. I eat very clean during the week and due to work or getting kids to/from school etc. If I'm checking my tolerance or progress for a newly 2016 developed intolerance or complex hard to digest food (it's been a tough 2016) I don't do it on a day before I'm schedule for work or any commitment.

My opinion is the immune system is still in high surveillance after eating gluten foods, when you stop it doesn't quite know what to do. It's still in high surveillance looking for gluten and  any other suspects. It's continuing to surveillance until it knows the threat is really gone. It's still looking for other irritants and it likes only clean natural (no food industry additives etc it considers them suspicious characters) the damaged gi is relieved to know it can start repairing while the current holes allow broken down molecules to slip through it can't complety breakdown.

When my body can't break something down or the quantity consumed was more than it can handle, it tells me  predominantly with my joint and myalgia symptoms at this time .  I had numerous symptoms any progress is embraced.  If it can't handle the food or quantity I know that I have to drop the food for a longer period of time or I must drop the portion amount below my body's tolerance threshold. My threshold is dictated by my immune system. It has determined what and how much my system can handle right now. I call it my bodies intuitive eating process -my new reality. I at one time this year had 8 intolerance s besides gluten issues. I am mostly eating Paleo for now. I have difficulty with fats unless very, very lean, a few high starches, and most standard American diet grains . 

I let my body guide me.

Good luck you may have to dial it down a bit dietary wise but your body will tell you if you listen. As other poster said above vitamins are also needed. I take probiotic, vitamin/mineral, and flax omega daily.

      Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

      Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

      I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

      Thanks I am mostly looking for everyday staples and easy meal ideas nothing too specialty if possible.

      There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?
