Total disappearance of common colds?

Something that's always weirded me out since I became somewhat non-responsive on repeat biopsies: I don't get colds anymore. Ever. I used to get maybe 5 a year — standard stuff. Nothing in the past 3 years. I get a lot of sleep these days, but still. My girlfriend gets sick; I do not.

Anyone else find their common transient illnesses take a strange turn after diagnosis? I hypothesize having an abnormal/overactive immune system might take down common bugs hard, but I also assume it's far more complicated than that.

Hellodee2 Explorer

I never was a very sick person until I was diagnosed. Now I wish I would catch the common cold instead of all the intestinal issues I have. I don't get the flu either. I can't remember the last time I was non celiac related sick.  Except for menopause, but that's another book for another day.

Yeah I think it has something to do with our overly aggressive immune systems. -_- not gotten virus sick in over 2 years despite being around people who are sick, sorta miss getting sick cause of a virus instead of getting sick cause I ate something that makes me throw up.

Nope.  I got the flu and a cold within a two month span at the end of winter.  However, I was battle a tooth infection during that same time period.

I wish!  I got the flu this winter as well as a couple of colds.  I do have 3 lids, the youngest in preschool, so there's always a lot of germs around. Lol

you're lucky you dont catch colds. im the opposite i catch everything very easily and get alot sicker than whoever i caught it from and take much longer to get better.

@jddh So...did the restricted diet you were going to implement work (FODMAP or Whole Foods)?  I recall that you were mis-diagnosed at one point with refractory celiac disease, but it was later determined that you were getting trace amounts of gluten in your diet.  If you are not catching colds, I assume that you have healed from the damages of celiac disease?  I hope so!!! ?

I was diagnosed in 2002 and I think I have had maybe 2 actual colds since then. I figured the same as you that with my immune system not having to try and 'save' me from gluten that it now is able to fight off the occasional virus.  The only thing it hasn't been able to fight off is shingles. Thankfully those are clearing and I blame myself for that with lack of sleep and a very poor diet for a bit. Lesson learned, one does not live off crackers and cheese alone.

I have notice that I am sick much less often.

@cyclinglady thanks for checking in :) Restricted diet didn't do much. Still had some VA last time they checked. Heath still otherwise fine, so RCD remains unlikely. My sxs kick in lockstep with life stress, so that kind of points to some general IBS stuff on top of celiac disease. Very doubtful I'm getting any gluten in, but fingers crossed my system is just a little hyper-vigilant, as I ponder on this thread.

meeeeeee!!!!  i used to get pneumonia every single winter!!!!  and all the flus and colds, etc - i am surrounded by kids and germs, but when they all get the flu, i do not.  my husband (mr-play-through-the-pain) even got knocked down (spent 2-3 days in BED miserable) by the last round of virus, but not me.   not to mention no headaches, no migraines, etc.  hormones and the dreaded menopause, like hellodee2 said, is a whole 'nother ballgame lolz

glad you are feeling better :)

Me too. I had numerous chest x rays as I couldnt shake colds off and they always progressed on to my chest. Barely happens since my diet change :)

You should be fine.  You may start feeling better within a few days.  Someone who is very low in thiamine may notice improvement within hours.   Did you get the NeuroMag  or another magnesium supplement?

Yes Bobs redmill cgf oatmeal I started when I became gluten-free. So taking all 3 with breakfast should work? Will I notice any reactions getting used to these or should I be fine. Thanks

Hello, @pilber309, welcome to the forum! Are you currently consuming dairy?   You mentioned something about lots of yogurt and cheese, but did you cut it out or are you eating lots of it?   Could you clarify please? Some people with Celiac react to casein, the protein in dairy the same as to gluten with antibodies and villi damage.

You may want to skip the oatmeal.  I believe you're trialing a gluten free diet while waiting for an appointment with your doctor in the new year and doing a gluten challenge then.  Some people with Celiac disease react to the protein in oats called avenin the same as to gluten.  Cross contamination between oats and gluten containing grains is possible.  Are you consuming certified gluten free oats?   I would hate for you to have a reaction to the oats and blame it on the vitamins. Yes, it will be fine to take them all together.  I take mine all together, B Complex, Benfotiamine and TTFD Thiamine with breakfast. If you're really anxious about it, just take the B Complex and Benfotiamine at breakfast and the Thiamax at lunch.  You won't have to take a second B Complex with the Thiamax.

So I purchased the Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine along with the Thiamax. I will take along with my Super B Complexes. I stopped taking the multi vitamins. Should I take all 3 vitamins/supplements together with my morning oatmeal breakfast? Do you think I will experience any bad symptoms when taking them.
