Celiacs in Shelters

Does anyone know any way the celiac community can help those of us that are having to sleep in and eat in shelters? Any organizations sending safe ready to eat foods that might need a contribution? Any organizations like the Red Cross helping that we can get in contact with etc...

My heart aches thinking of folks like us having to deal with all the trauma and risking or having gluten reactions at the same time. There has to be something those of us distant can do to help.

I know the local Celiac Group here on FB have a few members gathering gluten-free progresso soups, to take down there. I told them to contact gluten-free companies and local gluten-free bakeries for donations. I figured companies like Enjoy Life, GERBS, and a few others might donate to the cause for people with food allergies in general.

Funny I actually had a dream last night I had a food truck serving hot stew/soup to people during the storm. The actual setting was quit funny and ridiculous but the thought of doing something like that really touches home with how I like to help people and be useful. I would love to head up a effort to contact and gather gluten-free foods and go down there if I had a save means for my self to survive with my allergies/food issues (food truck/RV/Camper). -_- I have contacts in so many companies I am sure I could get a few cases of donations from various companies to give out.

Go Picnic has donated to tornado disasters in the past.  At one time, they were trying to get the Red Cross to stock some - but not sure how it went.  IN the past, The Red Cross basically said that 'beggars can't be choosers".  I think the Red Cross does great work, but I hope in the years since the Joplin tornado that thinking has changed.

Saw this on Facebook & saw the gluten-free watchdog was organizing something, too

If you’d like to help food allergy families, here’s how…

The San Antonio Food Bank is coordinating food efforts to help ALL of Texas hurricane victims right now. San Antonio is clear and sunny and having no issues with roads closures or mail delays (unlike Houston).

The information on the “Hurricane Harvey Emergency Response” pops up on their main page…scroll down to see all options.

•Folks can donate “MONETARY DONATIONS” and put in the NOTES section (at the bottom) that they want their donation to go to “FOOD ALLERGY FRIENDLY FOODS” – this may make the most immediate impact.

•Food allergy companies or donors can send “MATERIAL DONATIONS” food allergy products directly to the San Antonio Food Bank (address above) and clearly mark them as FOOD ALLERGY FRIENDLY – If possible, include a clear message that it’s food allergy friendly on the outside of the box, in the second address line, and on the inside of the box.

•Shipments direct from AMAZON: If you are sending allergy-friendly items directly from Amazon.com, you can enter "FOOD ALLERGY FRIENDLY " in the "Address line 2" field for the address and include it in a "gift message" which would be inside the box, to help with package sorting.

*San Antonio Residents – You can donate food allergy friendly items to the SA Food Bank or the City Council Offices listed.  Please clearly mark them as “FOOD ALLERGY FRIENDLY” inside and outside and if possible pack them in a sturdy box. You can sign up to volunteer at the SA Food Bank (you must sign up ahead of time).

FYI FARE and KFA/AAFA have blog posts with additional details. Enjoy Life and Sunbutter companies are already planning to send donations. AAFA is working with someone from the EoE community. If you happen to have a personal corporate connection looking to donate, please have them contact Chad Chittenden, Director of Food Industry Partnerships at cchittenden@safoodbank.org (210) 431-8313, but I’m sure he’s swamped and other organizations are already reaching out to companies.

--Susan & Selena -- San Antonio Food Allergy Support Team (volunteer leaders & FA moms)

P.S. There are many other organizations that need general help (including the Red Cross and Blood Bank). Thanks to any of you who are helping in whatever way works for you. <3

Dear Gluten Free Watchdog community,

First and foremost, for anyone impacted by Hurricane Harvey, our thoughts are with you and we hope you and your loved ones are safe. If you need gluten-free food and have an address where the food can be shipped for pick up, please let me know.

Some members of the community have reached out asking what we can do to help. On Monday, at the suggestion of a GFWD community member in Texas, I reached out to the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB). They did some legwork and got back to me letting me know that we would be able to contribute food through the Mass Care Task Force. I spoke to the NTFB again today and they do not yet have any information available regarding where we can send food. I was told that it wasn’t until today that the Houston Food Bank was even able to open. They understand that folks with celiac disease require gluten-free foods and they are very appreciative of our support. I will continue to be in touch with NTFB and will update the community with any information. Also know that other groups are working very hard to establish some means of getting food where it is needed.

Again, if anyone in Texas is in need of gluten-free foods or can help with efforts to get gluten-free food to where it is needed, please let me know.

Kind regards,

Here is the current info from gluten-free Watchdog -

Dear Gluten Free Watchdog community,

Here is the link to a post just published on Gluten Free Watchdog about sending gluten-free food to folks impacted by Hurrincane Harvey Open Original Shared Link

Here is the text of the post for your convenience:

This morning Chad from the San Antonio Food Bank called me. Open Original Shared Link

The food bank is able to accept food donations by mail. They are aware of the necessity of gluten-free food for folks with celiac disease and NCGS.

If you would like to donate food:

·      Please send non-perishable gluten-free food: Some possibilities include breakfast cereal, shelf-stable bread, such as Schar (please do not send food that must be kept in the freezer/fridge), Sun butter, snack bars, packages of dried fruit, shelf-stable meals, such as Tasty Bite, etc.  The food bank does not have any special requests, as they are in need of most everything. (Note: they have an ample supply of shelf-stable “milk” of all kinds, including soy etc.).

·      Please mark the outside of the box “Gluten-Free Food” in large bright letters. These boxes will be kept separate from other food donations and will be sent out to where they are needed as requests are received.

·      Please send your box to:

San Antonio Food Bank

5200 Enrique M. Barrera Parkway

San Antonio, Texas 78227

Thank you!

My bakery officially launched a campaign yesterday to raise money to send food and supplies to the San Antonio food bank. Our goal is to send sets of both Gluten Free foods and a set of Allergen Free food to help. We are committing all profits made this week on sales and orders to the cause, and accepting donations. I am looking at logistics and viability of making shelf stable snacks and packaging them also from my bakery to send over (candied nuts, seasoned seeds, dried fruits). Yesterday we did dairy free thai fried ice cream and collected $36 not much but a start.

Yes a facebook page, but fourm rules forbid me for posting it or saying it to go there. I have been gotten onto several times in the past for it. They consider it promoting a business/personal gain type of thing. I really want to comment on that but can't.

That's a shame. I tried googling gluten free bakery ennis tx but nothing really came up. If I lived closer I'd make you a website.

I had some really odd results.

I contacted 8 companies about donating gluten free food, allergen friendly foods, and supplies.I was collecting for both San Antonio Food Bank and for UMCOR.

Out of these 8 companies 3 denied me but instead posted on their social media how to help by donating to the San Antonio Food Bank within days of me messaging them. One ignored me and within 48 hours started their own donation campaign. One got back to me and forwarded the plans to management. Never head anything from the others. In the mean time my bakery raised just $68 donating all sales from the past 2 weeks to the cause.
As I have very limited goods to donate, (only some seeds, and nuts mixes I made to donate) should I just calculate their cost out and just send a monetary donation to the food banks? I mean shipping sorta counter acts what I can send.

Wonder if I should feel proud I moved some companies to help......

You could jsut drop the stuff off at a local food bank. They would appretiate it I am sure. Then just send the $68 to whatever organization you think will be the best at using it.  You also could see if your cities Celiac Support group is getting stuff together and if they will include what you have in their shipment.

Here is another way to donate.  this group is based in Kansas City.  they opened the first gluten-free/ allergen friendly food pantry in the US.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana
