Hi there, I just noticed my iron supplement contains Iron Polymaltose. This is derived from both iron and Maltol. Maltol is obtained from roasted malt. ROASTED MALT ?. Soooo a person goes to the doctors, is diagnosed with Celiac and as part of the treatment plan is prescribed an iron supplement that contains Maltol, an extract from malt, to help raise their iron levels? These doctors are killing us. Anyway please be careful and read all labelling carefully. I only noticed this myself as I kept getting bloating and skin rashes after taking my iron supplement only to find out it contains polymaltose a derivative of Maltol. Also I really had to go digging to find out how polymaltose is derived. I FINALLY stumbled, after much effort, across a site that says it comes from Maltol, which in turn comes from roasted malt. Talk about futher igniting the fire. Anyway here is the link that shows iron polymaltose is obtained from iron and maltol. info. Open Original Shared Link Here is the link showing Maltol is obtained from roasted malt. Open Original Shared Link

No, this chemical is gluten free per this leading celiac center (University of Chicago).  Scroll down to page 32:

This book is pretty handy and discusses celiac disease (diagnosing, symptoms, treatment, etc.) also talking to a pharmacist can help when buying over the counter supplements and medications.

My brain fog did not go away until I stopped taking iron.  I also noticed a big increase in energy after stopping.  Iron gave me ulcers according to my Dr.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
