Detour Protein Bars?

Hi all,

Before being gluten-free, I used to eat the Detour protein bars occassionally. I'm a college student, and looking at my class schedule for next semester, Tuesdays are going to definately be a day where I'm eating on the go! According to Trader's Joe's list of gluten-free items, Detour (Caramel Peanut and Peanut Butter) bars are gluten-free! Given that these can be found in a regular store (I don't have a Trader Joe's too close to my school), this would be great, to be able to just throw one of these bars in my bag in case I don't have time for anything else. Looking at the ingredients I can't see anything that would be a no-go. The only thing I see is the artificial flavors, but is that something that Trader Joe's would have checked out? I also emailed the company, so we'll see if I get a response from them as well.

Thanks guys!

Caramel Peanut:

Ingredients: Designer Whey Protein Blend (Whey Protein Concentrate, Hydrolyzed Whey Protein, PDUF whey protein isolate), water, GLYCERLEAN (99.7% USP Glycerine, L-Leucine, L-Taurine, CLA), chocolate coating [sugar, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, nonfat dry milk solids, cocoa powder processed with alkali, whole milk solids, soy lecthin, natural flavor, salt, artificial flavor], peanuts, caramel, soy protein isolate, gelatin, calcium caseinate, inulin, peanut flavor, rice flour, salt, sucralose (Splenda Brand), potassium sorbate.

Peanut Butter:

Ingredients: Designer Whey Protein Blend [(Whey Protein Concentrate, PDUF Whey Protein Isolate, Hydrolyzed Whey Protein), Soy Protein Isolate], Glycerlean [99.7% USP Glycerine, Taurine, L-Leucine, CLA], Milk Chocolate Flavored Coating (Maltitol, Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil, Non-Fat Dry Milk, Cocoa Powder (Processed With Alkali), Soy Lecthin, Salt, Vanilla), Sugar Free Caramel (Maltitol, Non-Fat Dry Milk, Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil, Cream, Butter, Natural Flavors, Salt, Disodium Phosphate, Lecithin), Water, Gelatin, Calcium Caseinate, Peanut Flour, Cocoa Butter, Rice Flour, Natural And Artificial Peanut Flavor, Mono And Di-Glycerides, Natural Vanilla Flavor, Potassium Sorbate (As A Preservative), Natural Vitamin E (As Mixed Tocopherols), Sucralose, Neotame.

But looking at the ingredients of the other two flavors (that aren't on Trader Joe's list), they look to be safe as well. Could it just be that Trader Joe's doesn't carry the other two flavors?

I e-mailed NEXT Proteins awhile back and they said that none of their Detour bars were gluten-free. Trader Joe's list is not reliable, in my opinion, as they had protein bars listed as gluten-free, when they had barley malt.

Sorry! I like the Genisoy PB protein bars, have you tried them?

Here's the response from the manufacturer:

Thank you for contacting us regarding our Designer Whey Products. All

seven award winning flavors of our Designer Whey Powders are gluten

free. There is no possibility of cross contamination, as the

manufacturing facility does not mix or bottle any products that contain

any grains.

Our Aria, 50% whey combined with 50& soy is also gluten free. Aria is

available in a delicious Vanilla and Chocolate flavor.

Unfortunately, Optibol as well as all of our Designer Whey bars are not

gluten free, including our Detour line, U-Turn, Oneway and Joyride.

Some of the ingredients in the bars are not gluten free and some of the

bars may have a statement made in a facility which processes wheat, or

have an allergy warning that states product contains nuts, eggs and or

milk products. This is stated on the bar wraps, in case of any cross

contamination issues.

I hope this helps! Best of luck with all of your health and fitness

goals!

Sincerely,

Next Proteins

I take both Benfotiamine and TTFD.   You might want to start with the Benfotiamine for a few days and then add in the TTFD.   You can look for NeuroMag (Magnesium Threonate).  A magnesium glycinate is fine, too.  Doctor's Best is a good brand.  Don't take more than 300mg total per day of magnesium or it may have a laxative effect.   Be sure to take the B Complex.  The Benfotiamine and TTFD will need the other B vitamins.

Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine has 100MG of Ben and 25 of Thia..... Do you think this is the one I should take or Objective Nutrients Thiamax (TTFD) which has 100MG Thiamine. How much magnesium should I look for? I take the womens 50+ multivitamin since consumerlabs stated and tested that it has the right amount of vitamins and not too much for men and doesn't have BHT which has shown to cause liver cancer in animals. I was never big with multivitamins as well as doctors I just read when I was first going gluten free to take a multi but I think I will stop them and work on trying the super B Thia and Ben, Mag.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.
