The Guys At The Deli Hate Me!

So there is a deli a couple blocks over from where I work that I go to maybe once a week to get lettuce wrap sandwiches. The first couple of times it was a bit of a challenge to explain but now they seem to have it down pat. They even seem to know to put the paper down so that none of the stuff touches the counter, etc. I usually go in with our group assistant and even though she's not celiac she likes to get the lettuce wraps also.

So today we go there and after I ordered my sandwich she was just getting a side of egg salad. He then asked her, "no bread?" When she said no she just wanted a side not a lettuce wrap he responded, "oh thank G-d, you made my day."

OMG the guys at the deli hate us!!! Let me point out this is not some cute neighborhood deli in some small town where everyone knows everyone. This is a deli in the middle of Times Square in NYC where these guys see 1,000's of people a day... and apparently they remember and hate the 2 girls that get the lettuce wrap sandwiches once a week!! I'm finding this pretty funny.

What a jerk! Because it's SO much extra work to make a sandwich on lettuce than it is on bread!

What was your reaction to that??

Well they always make it for me, and I can see that they always make it on the paper so it never touches the cutting board... so to be honest I don't really care if they like me or not. I didn't actually hear them say it, my assistant did. And even if I did hear them I probably would have just kinda made a joke out of it with them. I have actually had someone at another deli refuse to make me a "sandwich". They make a great lettuce wrap at this place, and on one hand it's kinda comforting to know they know me as the annoying girl with lettuce wrap sandwiches. Atleast I don't have to explain it 6 times, including to make it on the paper, which is why I think they truly think I'm insane!

For anyone in NY or who will be visiting and you want a lettuce wrap sandwich; thanks to me you will not have to explain yourself at Cranberry's on 45th b/t 6th & Broadway. LOL!!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
