Grocery Store Break Down

HI, This is not my first grocery store break down. After an hour, my eyes start going funny and my head has enough. Hubby was with me today and it was helpful, but after a while I'd just had enough. I"d like to not to buy so much of Amy's frozen things and make some more of my own. I"m working on it, but it's hard at times. I"ve been making my own Buttermilk bread from the Gluten free book and that's been pretty yummy.

Saturday I went to a women's expo and they had lots of food there. I knew I was eating things I should and it was so good. I just wanted to be "normal" for a day and have fun with my mom in law ( a good person). But by Saturday morning, the stomach cramps came for the rest of the morning and afternoon. THHHHHHHHHH!!

I agree with you, I think grocery shopping is very stressful. I make my husband come along too,as I need all the help I can get. And it takes soooo long to get thru the store. My husband has to remember to bring his reading glasses with him as we spend the whole time reading labels.

I am a busy working mom, my husb and I work different shifts, so I have to have some EASY meals to throw in the oven/microwave before we head off to a game, boy scouts, pta etc.

For the first couple of weeks after going gluten-free all I did was gluten-free frozen food. It just seemed so overwhelming. Then I became more comfortable with the diet and started going to the grocery store. It was so hard. I kept seeing all the food I could not have. After coming home and sobbing I made a decision. I was not going to the store. I made my husband go! I would make up a list and research the safe products. He would go with the cell phone and call if he had questions. After four months enough time had passed that I started going again. It was still sad at times but it did not feel as overwhelming.

My Grocery shopping time was about 1hr extra i would allow but now it is just the norm. It becomes a breeze after a little while, hang in there.

When i see the nice foods i say to myself yuck i am not eating that and then i seem to feel to feel better

Try it it's worth a go.

I can relate. Even after 9 years of this, I still envy people with grocery carts crammed with stuff, able to just take anything off of the shelf and not have to read the labels. Sometimes I wish I could tell them how lucky they have it.

And as for being "normal" at functions - I never considered myself normal, even before celiac disease. Just one more thing to make me different!:)

I try to do the trick of shoppong the perimeter of the grocery store and try to avoid the aisles. That way your are looking at fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and the dairy aisle (where they have a lot of lactose free stuff.) It is not as depressing and usually costs less. I had first heard the suggestion to do this before going gluten free to save money. You don't purchase as many prepared meals.

I agree - grocery shopping is so frustrating. I find that even eating at home after I think that I have founf "safe" things to eat is frustrating. I find that I am increasingly sensitive to other foods - so I am often afraid to eat anything - and am having a hard time figuring out what IS ok for me to eat. First cut out gluten, then dairy, then even goat's milk products and am now unsure about soy (and I don't eat meat - only seafood). What's a girl to do?

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.

Hi Colleen H,   I suffered with the pins and needles/burning feeling in my legs and feet for at least  6 years until my Nephrologist figured out that I had to go on a low salt diet.  He said my kidneys weren't strong enough to remove the salt.  The simple fix was a diuretic, but that med leaves the uric acid behind, so that wasn't an option.  On the bright side the low salt diet lowered my BP over 20 points and and the pins and needles/burning feeling went away.  Good Luck and hope this helps.

I did ... But aren't we going to be vitamin deficienct if we are not eating due to being sick ?? If the food we eat is gluten free and we have other sensitivities , how do we get out of the cycle??  Thank you

Anyone else get pins and needles. ??? Burning feeling ? Heat makes it so much worse 😔  Winter is here.  I had to lower my thermostat because I couldn't take that hot air feeling 😔  Hopefully it goes away soon
